Án-ne 了後, 我才感覺較輕鬆, 慢慢好起來. 我相信, 彼時激動 ê 心情若無 kō͘ 這種方式排解, 我定著早 tō 死 ah.

另外, 我 tī Brazil ê 利益 ká-ná mā 需要我去行一逝. M̄-koh, 若無先 kā chia ê 代誌料理好勢, kā 我 ê 財產交予可靠 ê 人管理, 我那有可能思考去 hia ê 代誌? 起初, 我想著彼个老朋友, its 彼个寡婦. 我知, 她做人誠實可靠, 一定袂辜負我. M̄-koh, taⁿ 她有歲 ah, koh 真 sàn. 我聽講, 她有欠債. 總講, 我無別个法度, 只好 kā 家伙扎 leh, 親身轉去英國.

I might well say now, indeed, that the latter end of Job was better than the beginning. It is impossible to express the flutterings of my very heart when I found all my wealth about me; for as the Brazil ships come all in fleets, the same ships which brought my letters brought my goods: and the effects were safe in the river before the letters came to my hand. In a word, I turned pale, and grew sick; and, had not the old man run and fetched me a cordial, I believe the sudden surprise of joy had overset nature, and I had died upon the spot: nay, after that I continued very ill, and was so some hours, till a physician being sent for, and something of the real cause of my illness being known, he ordered me to be let blood; after which I had relief, and grew well: but I verily believe, if I had not been eased by a vent given in that manner to the spirits, I should have died.

I was now master, all on a sudden, of above five thousand pounds sterling in money, and had an estate, as I might well call it, in the Brazils, of above a thousand pounds a year, as sure as an estate of lands in England: and, in a word, I was in a condition which I scarce knew how to understand, or how to compose myself for the enjoyment of it. /

The first thing I did was to recompense my original benefactor, my good old captain, who had been first charitable to me in my distress, kind to me in my beginning, and honest to me at the end. I showed him all that was sent to me; I told him that, next to the providence of Heaven, which disposed all things, it was owing to him; and that it now lay on me to reward him, which I would do a hundred-fold: so I first returned to him the hundred moidores I had received of him; then I sent for a notary, and caused him to draw up a general release or discharge from the four hundred and seventy moidores, which he had acknowledged he owed me, in the fullest and firmest manner possible. /

After which I caused a procuration to be drawn, empowering him to be the receiver of the annual profits of my plantation: and appointing my partner to account with him, and make the returns, by the usual fleets, to him in my name; and by a clause in the end, made a grant of one hundred moidores a year to him during his life, out of the effects, and fifty moidores a year to his son after him, for his life: and thus I requited my old man.

I had now to consider which way to steer my course next, and what to do with the estate that Providence had thus put into my hands; and, indeed, I had more care upon my head now than I had in my state of life in the island where I wanted nothing but what I had, and had nothing but what I wanted; whereas I had now a great charge upon me, and my business was how to secure it. I had not a cave now to hide my money in, or a place where it might lie without lock or key, till it grew mouldy and tarnished before anybody would meddle with it; on the contrary, I knew not where to put it, or whom to trust with it. My old patron, the captain, indeed, was honest, and that was the only refuge I had. /

In the next place, my interest in the Brazils seemed to summon me thither; but now I could not tell how to think of going thither till I had settled my affairs, and left my effects in some safe hands behind me. At first I thought of my old friend the widow, who I knew was honest, and would be just to me; but then she was in years, and but poor, and, for aught I knew, might be in debt: so that, in a word, I had no way but to go back to England myself and take my effects with me.

It was some months, however, before I resolved upon this; and, therefore, as I had rewarded the old captain fully, and to his satisfaction, who had been my former benefactor, so I began to think of the poor widow, whose husband had been my first benefactor, and she, while it was in her power, my faithful steward and instructor. /

So, the first thing I did, I got a merchant in Lisbon to write to his correspondent in London, not only to pay a bill, but to go find her out, and carry her, in money, a hundred pounds from me, and to talk with her, and comfort her in her poverty, by telling her she should, if I lived, have a further supply: at the same time I sent my two sisters in the country a hundred pounds each, they being, though not in want, yet not in very good circumstances; one having been married and left a widow; and the other having a husband not so kind to her as he should be. /

But among all my relations or acquaintances I could not yet pitch upon one to whom I durst commit the gross of my stock, that I might go away to the Brazils, and leave things safe behind me; and this greatly perplexed me.

這位善良人所講 ê 話, 充滿感情, 伊 ná 講, 我目屎 ná 滴. 尾 ah, 我提伊 100 Portugal 金幣, koh 借伊 ê 筆 kap 墨水, 寫一張收據予伊. 我 kā 其他 ê 錢還伊, koh kā 伊講, 只要收回我 ê 種作園, 這條錢我 mā 會還伊 (che, 後來, 我確實有 án-ne 做). Tī 批尾, 伊 koh 表示本人 hām 家族對我 ê 友誼, koh 送我 7 領真媠 ê 豹皮做 lé-mi̍h, he 是伊派去 Afrika ê 另一隻船扎轉來 ê, 彼个航行比我 ke 真好運.

伊 mā 送我 5 箱上好 ê 蜜餞, 100 塊比 Portugal 金幣較細 ê 金角仔. 仝彼个船隊, 我 ê 代理人 ê 後代 mā 寄予我 1,200 箱糖, 800 卷薰草; in koh kā 數面結存 ê 財產換做黃金, mā 同齊寄來予我.

The good man then began to complain of his misfortunes, and how he had been obliged to make use of my money to recover his losses, and buy him a share in a new ship. 

“However, my old friend,” says he, “you shall not want a supply in your necessity; and as soon as my son returns you shall be fully satisfied.”

 Upon this he pulls out an old pouch, and gives me one hundred and sixty Portugal moidores in gold; and giving the writings of his title to the ship, which his son was gone to the Brazils in, of which he was quarter-part owner, and his son another, he puts them both into my hands for security of the rest.

I was too much moved with the honesty and kindness of the poor man to be able to bear this; and remembering what he had done for me, how he had taken me up at sea, and how generously he had used me on all occasions, and particularly how sincere a friend he was now to me, I could hardly refrain weeping at what he had said to me; therefore I asked him if his circumstances admitted him to spare so much money at that time, and if it would not straiten him? He told me he could not say but it might straiten him a little; but, however, it was my money, and I might want it more than he.

Everything the good man said was full of affection, and I could hardly refrain from tears while he spoke; in short, I took one hundred of the moidores, and called for a pen and ink to give him a receipt for them: then I returned him the rest, and told him if ever I had possession of the plantation I would return the other to him also (as, indeed, I afterwards did); and that as to the bill of sale of his part in his son’s ship, I would not take it by any means; but that if I wanted the money, I found he was honest enough to pay me; and if I did not, but came to receive what he gave me reason to expect, I would never have a penny more from him.

When this was past, the old man asked me if he should put me into a method to make my claim to my plantation. I told him I thought to go over to it myself. He said I might do so if I pleased, but that if I did not, there were ways enough to secure my right, and immediately to appropriate the profits to my use: and as there were ships in the river of Lisbon just ready to go away to Brazil, he made me enter my name in a public register, with his affidavit, affirming, upon oath, that I was alive, and that I was the same person who took up the land for the planting the said plantation at first. /

This being regularly attested by a notary, and a procuration affixed, he directed me to send it, with a letter of his writing, to a merchant of his acquaintance at the place; and then proposed my staying with him till an account came of the return.

Never was anything more honourable than the proceedings upon this procuration; for in less than seven months I received a large packet from the survivors of my trustees, the merchants, for whose account I went to sea, in which were the following, particular letters and papers enclosed:—

First, there was the account-current of the produce of my farm or plantation, from the year when their fathers had balanced with my old Portugal captain, being for six years; the balance appeared to be one thousand one hundred and seventy-four moidores in my favour.

Secondly, there was the account of four years more, while they kept the effects in their hands, before the government claimed the administration, as being the effects of a person not to be found, which they called civil death; and the balance of this, the value of the plantation increasing, amounted to nineteen thousand four hundred and forty-six crusadoes, being about three thousand two hundred and forty moidores.

Thirdly, there was the Prior of St. Augustine’s account, who had received the profits for above fourteen years; but not being able to account for what was disposed of by the hospital, very honestly declared he had eight hundred and seventy-two moidores not distributed, which he acknowledged to my account: as to the king’s part, that refunded nothing.

There was a letter of my partner’s, congratulating me very affectionately upon my being alive, giving me an account how the estate was improved, and what it produced a year; with the particulars of the number of squares, or acres that it contained, how planted, how many slaves there were upon it: and making two-and-twenty crosses for blessings, told me he had said so many Ave Marias to thank the Blessed Virgin that I was alive; inviting me very passionately to come over and take possession of my own, and in the meantime to give him orders to whom he should deliver my effects if I did not come myself; concluding with a hearty tender of his friendship, and that of his family; and sent me as a present seven fine leopards’ skins, which he had, it seems, received from Africa, by some other ship that he had sent thither, and which, it seems, had made a better voyage than I. /

He sent me also five chests of excellent sweetmeats, and a hundred pieces of gold uncoined, not quite so large as moidores. By the same fleet my two merchant-trustees shipped me one thousand two hundred chests of sugar, eight hundred rolls of tobacco, and the rest of the whole account in gold.

After some passionate expressions of the old acquaintance between us, I inquired, you may be sure, after my plantation and my partner. The old man told me he had not been in the Brazils for about nine years; but that he could assure me that when he came away my partner was living, but the trustees whom I had joined with him to take cognisance of my part were both dead: that, however, he believed I would have a very good account of the improvement of the plantation; for that, upon the general belief of my being cast away and drowned, my trustees had given in the account of the produce of my part of the plantation to the procurator-fiscal, who had appropriated it, in case I never came to claim it, one-third to the king, and two-thirds to the monastery of St. Augustine, to be expended for the benefit of the poor, and for the conversion of the Indians to the Catholic faith: but that, if I appeared, or any one for me, to claim the inheritance, it would be restored; only that the improvement, or annual production, being distributed to charitable uses, could not be restored: but he assured me that the steward of the king’s revenue from lands, and the providore, or steward of the monastery, had taken great care all along that the incumbent, that is to say my partner, gave every year a faithful account of the produce, of which they had duly received my moiety. /

I asked him if he knew to what height of improvement he had brought the plantation, and whether he thought it might be worth looking after; or whether, on my going thither, I should meet with any obstruction to my possessing my just right in the moiety. /

He told me he could not tell exactly to what degree the plantation was improved; but this he knew, that my partner was grown exceeding rich upon the enjoying his part of it; and that, to the best of his remembrance, he had heard that the king’s third of my part, which was, it seems, granted away to some other monastery or religious house, amounted to above two hundred moidores a year: that as to my being restored to a quiet possession of it, there was no question to be made of that, my partner being alive to witness my title, and my name being also enrolled in the register of the country; also he told me that the survivors of my two trustees were very fair, honest people, and very wealthy; and he believed I would not only have their assistance for putting me in possession, but would find a very considerable sum of money in their hands for my account, being the produce of the farm while their fathers held the trust, and before it was given up, as above; which, as he remembered, was for about twelve years.

I showed myself a little concerned and uneasy at this account, and inquired of the old captain how it came to pass that the trustees should thus dispose of my effects, when he knew that I had made my will, and had made him, the Portuguese captain, my universal heir, &c.

He told me that was true; but that as there was no proof of my being dead, he could not act as executor until some certain account should come of my death; and, besides, he was not willing to intermeddle with a thing so remote: that it was true he had registered my will, and put in his claim; and could he have given any account of my being dead or alive, he would have acted by procuration, and taken possession of the ingenio (so they call the sugar-house), and have given his son, who was now at the Brazils, orders to do it. /

“But,” says the old man, “I have one piece of news to tell you, which perhaps may not be so acceptable to you as the rest; and that is, believing you were lost, and all the world believing so also, your partner and trustees did offer to account with me, in your name, for the first six or eight years’ profits, which I received. There being at that time great disbursements for increasing the works, building an ingenio, and buying slaves, it did not amount to near so much as afterwards it produced; however,” says the old man, “I shall give you a true account of what I have received in all, and how I have disposed of it.”

After a few days’ further conference with this ancient friend, he brought me an account of the first six years’ income of my plantation, signed by my partner and the merchant-trustees, being always delivered in goods, viz. tobacco in roll, and sugar in chests, besides rum, molasses, &c., which is the consequence of a sugar-work; and I found by this account, that every year the income considerably increased; but, as above, the disbursements being large, the sum at first was small: however, the old man let me see that he was debtor to me four hundred and seventy moidores of gold, besides sixty chests of sugar and fifteen double rolls of tobacco, which were lost in his ship; he having been shipwrecked coming home to Lisbon, about eleven years after my having the place. /

Chiah-ê 代誌發落了後, 第二工我 tō kap in 離開, peh 上大船. 阮原本準備即時欲離開, m̄-koh 到暗時猶無起碇. Koh 隔工透早, hit 5 人其中 2 个, 泅水來到大船邊, 哀哀怨嘆講, 另外 hit 3 人按怎對 in 歹, 求阮看神 ê 面子收留 in, 若無, 會予 in 刣死, 求船長予 in 上船, tī chia 予伊隨吊死 mā 甘願. 對這項代誌, 船長假鬼講伊無權利決定, 著先得著我 ê 同意. M̄-koh, 經過種種為難, koh 經過慎重咒誓, in 才 hông 救上船. 上船了後, in koh hông 處罰 kō͘ 鞭 sut, hām tī 傷痕抹鹽. Án-ne 了後, in 果然變 kah 真乖, 真恬.

Koh 過一睏, 漲流 ah, 我 tō 命令, kā 我答應予 hit 3 人 ê 物件, kō͘ 小船載上岸. 我 koh kā 船長求情, 請伊 kā in 家己 ê 箱仔 hām 衫褲 lóng 送過去. In 接著 chiah-ê lóng 表示感謝. 我 koh 鼓勵 in, 講, 如果將來我有機會, 會得派船來接 in, 我袂袂記得 in.

離島 ê 時, 我 kā 家己做 ê 羊皮帽, 雨傘, hām 1 隻鸚哥扎上船, 做紀念. 我 mā 無袂記得 kā 錢扎走, chiah-ê 錢 siuⁿ 久無用, lóng 已經退色, 生鉎 ah, 著 kā 拭, kā 鑢, 才看著銀. 猶有我 tī Sepanga 破船發現 ê 錢 mā 是 án-ne. Chŏaⁿ, 根據船頂 ê 記錄, 我 tī 1686 年 12 月 19 離開島. 我總共 tī 這个島生活 28 年 2 個月 koh 19 工. 我第二擺受難得救 ê 這工, 拄好 hām 我第一擺 ùi Sallee ê Moor 人 hia 坐長艇逃走 ê 日子仝一工. Tī 船頂, 經過長時間 ê 航行, 我 tī 1687 年 6 月 11 到位英國, 已經離開英國 35 年 ah.

到英國, 人人 kā 我當做外國人, 袂輸我 m̄-bat tī chia 蹛過. 當初替我管錢 ê 恩人, 彼个忠實管家, taⁿ 猶活著, m̄-koh 經過濟濟不幸. 她 koh 嫁了後, iū-koh 守寡, 處境真悽慘. 我 kā 她講, 免煩惱, 我袂 kā 她討錢. 顛倒反, 為著報答早前她對我 ê 照顧 kap 忠厚, 我 koh 盡能力予她淡薄補助. 在我彼時 ê 手頭來講, che 對她 mā 無啥大幫助. M̄-koh, 我 kā 她保證, 我無袂記得過去她對我 ê 好, koh kā 她講, 只要我將來有能力幫助她, 我絕對袂 kā 放袂記. Che 著以後咱才 koh 講.

後來, 我去 Yorkshire. 阮老爸已經死, 老母 hām 家族 mā lóng 無 tī-leh ah. 我干焦揣著兩个小妹 hām 一个兄哥 ê 兩个囡仔. 因為真早逐个 tō 認定我已經死, 所以無留任何家伙予我. 所以 ah, 簡單一句話, 我完全揣無救助 a̍h 幫贊. 我身軀賰 ê 一屑仔錢 mā 無法度予我徛起 tī 這个世界.

萬萬想袂到, tī 這个時陣我得著一个人 ê 報答. 我意外救船長, mā 救伊 ê 船 hām 規船 ê 貨. 船長 kā 我按怎救船 kap 船頂 ê 人 ê 經過, 詳細講予船頭家聽. In tō 邀請我去 kap in 以及幾个生理人見面. In 對我 ê 作為大大 o-ló, koh 送我 200 英鎊做答謝.

M̄-koh, 一再思考我 ê 情境, 感覺實在無徛起 ê 機會, 我決定先去 Lisbon, 看是毋是會當探聽著我 tī Brazil ê 種作園, 以及我合股同伴 ê 狀況. 我相信, hiah-ê 人定著想講我已經死 ah. 抱這个希望, 我搭上往 Lisbon ê 船, tī 隔年 4 月到位. Tī án-ne 奔波 ê 中間, 我 ê 同伴 Friday 一直真心跟綴我, 時時證明伊是忠實可靠 ê 僕人. 

一下到 Lisbon, 經過探聽, 有夠歡喜, 我揣著老朋友, 也 tō 是 tī Afrika 海上救我 ê 彼个船長. Taⁿ 伊已經有歲 ah, 早 tō 無 koh 出海. In 囝接伊 ê 船長缺, 已經是一个中年人, in 繼續 teh 做 Brazil ê 生理. 老先生袂認得我, 講實在, 我 mā 認袂出伊. M̄-koh, 真緊我 tō koh 認出伊. Tán 我 kā 伊講起我是 siáng 了後, 伊 mā 真緊 tō 想起來.

CHAPTER XIX.

RETURN TO ENGLAND

19.1

Having done all this I left them the next day, and went on board the ship. We prepared immediately to sail, but did not weigh that night. The next morning early, two of the five men came swimming to the ship’s side, and making the most lamentable complaint of the other three, begged to be taken into the ship for God’s sake, for they should be murdered, and begged the captain to take them on board, though he hanged them immediately. Upon this the captain pretended to have no power without me; but after some difficulty, and after their solemn promises of amendment, they were taken on board, and were, some time after, soundly whipped and pickled; after which they proved very honest and quiet fellows.

Some time after this, the boat was ordered on shore, the tide being up, with the things promised to the men; to which the captain, at my intercession, caused their chests and clothes to be added, which they took, and were very thankful for. I also encouraged them, by telling them that if it lay in my power to send any vessel to take them in, I would not forget them.

When I took leave of this island, I carried on board, for relics, the great goat-skin cap I had made, my umbrella, and one of my parrots; also, I forgot not to take the money I formerly mentioned, which had lain by me so long useless that it was grown rusty or tarnished, and could hardly pass for silver till it had been a little rubbed and handled, as also the money I found in the wreck of the Spanish ship. And thus I left the island, the 19th of December, as I found by the ship’s account, in the year 1686, after I had been upon it eight-and-twenty years, two months, and nineteen days; being delivered from this second captivity the same day of the month that I first made my escape in the long-boat from among the Moors of Sallee. In this vessel, after a long voyage, I arrived in England the 11th of June, in the year 1687, having been thirty-five years absent.

When I came to England I was as perfect a stranger to all the world as if I had never been known there. My benefactor and faithful steward, whom I had left my money in trust with, was alive, but had had great misfortunes in the world; was become a widow the second time, and very low in the world. I made her very easy as to what she owed me, assuring her I would give her no trouble; but, on the contrary, in gratitude for her former care and faithfulness to me, I relieved her as my little stock would afford; which at that time would, indeed, allow me to do but little for her; but I assured her I would never forget her former kindness to me; nor did I forget her when I had sufficient to help her, as shall be observed in its proper place. /

I went down afterwards into Yorkshire; but my father was dead, and my mother and all the family extinct, except that I found two sisters, and two of the children of one of my brothers; and as I had been long ago given over for dead, there had been no provision made for me; so that, in a word, I found nothing to relieve or assist me; and that the little money I had would not do much for me as to settling in the world.

I met with one piece of gratitude indeed, which I did not expect; and this was, that the master of the ship, whom I had so happily delivered, and by the same means saved the ship and cargo, having given a very handsome account to the owners of the manner how I had saved the lives of the men and the ship, they invited me to meet them and some other merchants concerned, and all together made me a very handsome compliment upon the subject, and a present of almost £200 sterling.

But after making several reflections upon the circumstances of my life, and how little way this would go towards settling me in the world, I resolved to go to Lisbon, and see if I might not come at some information of the state of my plantation in the Brazils, and of what was become of my partner, who, I had reason to suppose, had some years past given me over for dead. With this view I took shipping for Lisbon, where I arrived in April following, my man Friday accompanying me very honestly in all these ramblings, and proving a most faithful servant upon all occasions. /

When I came to Lisbon, I found out, by inquiry, and to my particular satisfaction, my old friend, the captain of the ship who first took me up at sea off the shore of Africa. He was now grown old, and had left off going to sea, having put his son, who was far from a young man, into his ship, and who still used the Brazil trade. The old man did not know me, and indeed I hardly knew him. But I soon brought him to my remembrance, and as soon brought myself to his remembrance, when I told him who I was.

不而過, 船長 ká-ná 有寡為難, 袂輸伊毋敢予 in 留 tī hia. 對 che, 我激一个無歡喜 ê 氣口, kā 船長講, in 是我 ê 俘虜, 毋是伊 ê. 既然我已經做 hiah 濟人情予 in, 我講 ê 話著準算. 伊若無同意, 我 tō kā in 放掉, tō 當做我無掠著 in. 伊若無歡喜, 伊會使 koh kā in 掠起來.

聽著 chiah-ê 話, in lóng 足感激. 我 tō kā in 敨放, 叫 in 走去原來 hông 掠著 ê 樹林. 我 koh 對 in 講, 我會使予 in 一寡武器 hām 火藥, koh 指導 in 按怎 tī chia 好好生活, 如果 in 願意. 到這時, 我準備欲上船 ah, tō kā 船長講, 彼暗我著做準備, 欲 tī 島上 koh 蹛一暝, 希望伊先上船, kā 一切安排好勢, 第二工派小船來海岸接我. 我特別下令, 叫伊 kā 彼个拍死 ê 新船長吊 tī 桅杆, 予眾人看會著.

18.8

However, the captain seemed to make some difficulty of it, as if he durst not leave them there. Upon this I seemed a little angry with the captain, and told him that they were my prisoners, not his; and that seeing I had offered them so much favour, I would be as good as my word; and that if he did not think fit to consent to it I would set them at liberty, as I found them: and if he did not like it he might take them again if he could catch them. /

Upon this they appeared very thankful, and I accordingly set them at liberty, and bade them retire into the woods, to the place whence they came, and I would leave them some firearms, some ammunition, and some directions how they should live very well if they thought fit. Upon this I prepared to go on board the ship; but told the captain I would stay that night to prepare my things, and desired him to go on board in the meantime, and keep all right in the ship, and send the boat on shore next day for me; ordering him, at all events, to cause the new captain, who was killed, to be hanged at the yard-arm, that these men might see him.

When the captain was gone I sent for the men up to me to my apartment, and entered seriously into discourse with them on their circumstances. I told them I thought they had made a right choice; that if the captain had carried them away they would certainly be hanged. I showed them the new captain hanging at the yard-arm of the ship, and told them they had nothing less to expect.

When they had all declared their willingness to stay, I then told them I would let them into the story of my living there, and put them into the way of making it easy to them. Accordingly, I gave them the whole history of the place, and of my coming to it; showed them my fortifications, the way I made my bread, planted my corn, cured my grapes; and, in a word, all that was necessary to make them easy. /

I told them the story also of the seventeen Spaniards that were to be expected, for whom I left a letter, and made them promise to treat them in common with themselves. Here it may be noted that the captain, who had ink on board, was greatly surprised that I never hit upon a way of making ink of charcoal and water, or of something else, as I had done things much more difficult.

I left them my firearms—viz. five muskets, three fowling-pieces, and three swords. I had above a barrel and a half of powder left; for after the first year or two I used but little, and wasted none. I gave them a description of the way I managed the goats, and directions to milk and fatten them, and to make both butter and cheese. In a word, I gave them every part of my own story; and told them I should prevail with the captain to leave them two barrels of gunpowder more, and some garden-seeds, which I told them I would have been very glad of. Also, I gave them the bag of peas which the captain had brought me to eat, and bade them be sure to sow and increase them.

18.7 船長獻予我厚禮

阮交談一睏, 船長講, 伊有扎寡點心 kap 等路欲予我, 這是船頂提 ê, 是 hiah-ê 霸佔船 ê 惡徒搶賰 ê. 講到 chia, 伊 tō 向小船喝聲, 叫 in kā 獻予總督 ê 物件搬上岸. 確實, 這是一份厚禮, 袂輸欲留我繼續蹛 tī 島上, 無欲載我走. 

首先, 伊扎予我 1 箱高級 ê 甜藥酒, 6 大矸 Madeira 白 pô-tô 酒, (每矸 2 quart [2.3 liter]), 2 磅 [907 g] 上好薰草, 12 塊船頂 ê 好牛肉, 6 塊豬肉, 1 袋豆仔, 和大約 1 hundred-weight [50.8 kg] 餅乾. 伊 koh 扎予我 1 箱糖, 1 箱麵粉, 1 袋滿滿 ê lemon, 2 矸 lime 汁, koh 濟濟其他物件. 想 tō 知, 對我這款狀況 ê 人來講, 這是 kài 親切 koh 予人歡喜 ê 禮物. M̄-koh, 叫我改穿這軀裝扮, 頭起先煞是世界 m̄-bat 有 ê 彼種袂爽快, 袂自在, koh 袂自然. 

送禮 ê 儀式結束, 物件 mā lóng 搬入去住所, 阮 tō 開始參詳處理俘虜 ê 代誌. 阮著考慮, 敢欲冒險𤆬 in 綴阮, 尤其其中有兩人, 在阮看, 是無藥救, 本性袂改 ê 惡人. 船長講, 伊知 hit 兩人是大歹人, 毋免 kā 勉強, 若欲𤆬 in, 定著愛 kā 當做犯人, 掛跤鐐手銬. 等船到任何一个英國殖民地, tō kā in 交予當局法辦. 在我看, 船長確實對 che 真袂放心.

所致, 我 kā 伊講, 如果伊同意, 我會使負責勸 hit 兩人, 予 in 家己提議, 請求欲留 tī 這个島. 

"Án-ne 我上歡喜," 船長講, "我真心同意."

"Án-ne 好," 我講, "我叫人𤆬 in 來, 我來 kap in 談."

Chŏaⁿ, 我吩咐 Friday 和兩个人質去執行這項任務. 原來 ê 人質今 lóng 敨放 ah, 因為 in ê 同伴已經完成任務 ah. 我叫 in 去山洞, kā 關 tī hia hit 五人, 手照舊縛著, 𤆬到寮仔, kā 關 tī hia, 等我去處置.

過一睏, 我穿新衫來到 hia. 這時, 我是總督 ê 身份. 我和船長 kap 阮 ê 人相見了後, 我叫 in kā hit 5 人𤆬到面前來. 我 kā in 講, 我已經了解 in 對待船長 ê 惡行, 按怎 kā 船奪走, 準備欲繼續去做搶劫 ê 猴弄. M̄-koh, 天意予 in 跋落家己替別人挖 ê 陷阱.

我予 in 知影, tī 我 ê 指揮下, 大船已經奪轉來 ah, 今停靠 tī 海口. In liâm-mi tō 會看著, in 彼个新船長已經得著惡行 ê 報應, 吊 tī 桅杆頂 teh 示眾. Á 若 in neh, 我想欲知影 in 猶有啥話欲講. 是按怎我無 kā in 用海賊現行犯處決, che in 絕對袂懷疑, 我有這个權力.

這時, 其中一人代表逐个講話. 伊講, in 無啥話好 koh 講 ah. M̄-koh, hông 掠 ê 時, 船長有答應欲饒 in ê 命, 今 in 著犁頭懇求我 ê 寬赦. M̄-koh, 我講, 因為我已經決定欲𤆬部下離開這个島, 搭船長 ê 船轉去英國, 所以我毋知著按怎寬赦 in. Á 若船長 neh, 伊干焦會當 kā in 當做囚犯關起來, 載轉去英國, 交予當局以謀反 kap 劫船 ê 罪去審判. He 結果 in 定著知, tō 是上刑台. 所致, 我實在 mā 毋知有啥較好 ê 法度, 除非 in 決定欲 kā 命運交予這个島.

In 若決定 án-ne, 我本人無意見, 因為橫直我欲離開 ah. In 若欲留落來, 我會使放 in 一條活路. 對這, in ká-ná 真感激, tō 講, in 甘願冒險留 tī chia, mā 無愛 hông 送去英國去吊死. Chŏaⁿ, 我 tō 決定代誌 án-ne 辦.

When we had talked a while, the captain told me he had brought me some little refreshment, such as the ship afforded, and such as the wretches that had been so long his masters had not plundered him of. Upon this, he called aloud to the boat, and bade his men bring the things ashore that were for the governor; and, indeed, it was a present as if I had been one that was not to be carried away with them, but as if I had been to dwell upon the island still. /

First, he had brought me a case of bottles full of excellent cordial waters, six large bottles of Madeira wine (the bottles held two quarts each), two pounds of excellent good tobacco, twelve good pieces of the ship’s beef, and six pieces of pork, with a bag of peas, and about a hundred-weight of biscuit; he also brought me a box of sugar, a box of flour, a bag full of lemons, and two bottles of lime-juice, and abundance of other things. But besides these, and what was a thousand times more useful to me, he brought me six new clean shirts, six very good neckcloths, two pair of gloves, one pair of shoes, a hat, and one pair of stockings, with a very good suit of clothes of his own, which had been worn but very little: in a word, he clothed me from head to foot. /

It was a very kind and agreeable present, as any one may imagine, to one in my circumstances, but never was anything in the world of that kind so unpleasant, awkward, and uneasy as it was to me to wear such clothes at first.

After these ceremonies were past, and after all his good things were brought into my little apartment, we began to consult what was to be done with the prisoners we had; for it was worth considering whether we might venture to take them with us or no, especially two of them, whom he knew to be incorrigible and refractory to the last degree; and the captain said he knew they were such rogues that there was no obliging them, and if he did carry them away, it must be in irons, as malefactors, to be delivered over to justice at the first English colony he could come to; and I found that the captain himself was very anxious about it. /

Upon this, I told him that, if he desired it, I would undertake to bring the two men he spoke of to make it their own request that he should leave them upon the island. 

“I should be very glad of that,” says the captain, “with all my heart.” 

“Well,” says I, “I will send for them up and talk with them for you.” 

So I caused Friday and the two hostages, for they were now discharged, their comrades having performed their promise; I say, I caused them to go to the cave, and bring up the five men, pinioned as they were, to the bower, and keep them there till I came. /

After some time, I came thither dressed in my new habit; and now I was called governor again. Being all met, and the captain with me, I caused the men to be brought before me, and I told them I had got a full account of their villainous behaviour to the captain, and how they had run away with the ship, and were preparing to commit further robberies, but that Providence had ensnared them in their own ways, and that they were fallen into the pit which they had dug for others. /

I let them know that by my direction the ship had been seized; that she lay now in the road; and they might see by-and-by that their new captain had received the reward of his villainy, and that they would see him hanging at the yard-arm; that, as to them, I wanted to know what they had to say why I should not execute them as pirates taken in the fact, as by my commission they could not doubt but I had authority so to do.

One of them answered in the name of the rest, that they had nothing to say but this, that when they were taken the captain promised them their lives, and they humbly implored my mercy. But I told them I knew not what mercy to show them; for as for myself, I had resolved to quit the island with all my men, and had taken passage with the captain to go to England; and as for the captain, he could not carry them to England other than as prisoners in irons, to be tried for mutiny and running away with the ship; the consequence of which, they must needs know, would be the gallows; so that I could not tell what was best for them, unless they had a mind to take their fate in the island. /

If they desired that, as I had liberty to leave the island, I had some inclination to give them their lives, if they thought they could shift on shore. They seemed very thankful for it, and said they would much rather venture to stay there than be carried to England to be hanged. So I left it on that issue.

Án-ne chò liáu-āu, koh khak-pó kah-pán an-choân, chûn-tiúⁿ bēng-lēng tōa-hù chhōa saⁿ-ê lâng lòng-mn̂g ji̍p-khì āu kah-pán chhng-pâng, khì hia lia̍h teh khùn ê hoán-poān-chiá sin chûn-tiúⁿ. Chit-sî, sin chûn-tiúⁿ thiaⁿ tio̍h kéng-pò, í-keng khí-chhn̂g, hām nn̄g-ê chûn-oân kap chi̍t-ê cha-po͘ gín-á, chhiú-lāi lóng ū chhèng. Tī tōa-hù kō͘ chi̍t-ki thih-ki kā mn̂g kiāu-khui ê sî, sin chûn-tiúⁿ hām chhiú-ē bô-koán it-chhè hiòng in khui-chhèng. Musket chhèng-chí phah tn̄g tōa-hù ê chhiú-kut, mā siong tio̍h kî-thaⁿ nn̄g-ê lâng, m̄-koh bô phah-sí lâng.

Tōa-hù hoah-siaⁿ kiò lâng lâi chi-oān, m̄-koh sûi chông ji̍p-khì chûn-tiúⁿ-sek, kō͘ chhiú-chhèng phah hiòng sin chûn-tiúⁿ ê thâu; chhèng-chí ùi i ê chhùi ji̍p-khì, koh ùi chi̍t-pêng hīⁿ-khang āu-piah chhut-lâi, i chi̍t-kù ōe to bô koh kóng ah. Khòaⁿ tio̍h án-ne, kî-thaⁿ ê lâng lóng tâu-hâng ah. Tōa chûn chū án-ne khak-khak si̍t-si̍t toa̍t tńg-lâi ah, bô-koh hi-seng jīm-hô chi̍t-tiâu lâng miā.

It-tàn toa̍t-chûn sêng-kong, chûn-tiúⁿ hā-lēng liân phah 7-chhèng. Che sī góa kap i iok-tēng ê sìn-hō, thong-ti góa tāi-chì sêng-kong. Tong-jiân, lí mā tông-ì, thiaⁿ tio̍h che góa chiâⁿ hoaⁿ-hí, in-ūi góa it-ti̍t chē tī hōaⁿ-piⁿ tán-thāi chit-ê sìn-hō, chha-put-to it-ti̍t tán-kàu pòaⁿ-mê boeh óa nn̄g-tiám.

Chheng-chhó thiaⁿ tio̍h sìn-hō liáu, góa tō tó lo̍h-lâi khùn. Chit-ji̍t góa ū-kàu thiám, só͘-í khùn kah chin lo̍h-bîn, it-ti̍t kàu thiaⁿ tio̍h chi̍t-ê chhèng-siaⁿ kā góa heh chi̍t-kiaⁿ, sûi kín khí-chhn̂g. Góa thiaⁿ-tio̍h ū lâng kiò góa "Chóng-tok! Chóng-tok!" Góa sûi chai, he sī chûn-tiúⁿ, tō peh-chiūⁿ soaⁿ-téng, khòaⁿ tio̍h i khiā tī hia, chhiú kí tōa chûn, jiân-āu kā góa kui-ê lám tio̍h. 

"Góa chhin-ài ê pêng-iú hām kiù-miā un-jîn," i kóng, "lí ê chûn tī hia, he sī lí ê chûn, goán hām chûn-téng ê it-chhè lóng sī lí ê."

Góa gia̍h-ba̍k khòaⁿ tōa chûn, khòaⁿ i thêng tī lī hōaⁿ bô pòaⁿ mai [800 bí] ê só͘-chāi. Goân-lâi chûn-tiúⁿ toa̍t-chûn sêng-kong liáu-āu, khòaⁿ thiⁿ-khì hó, tō khí tiāⁿ, kā sái kàu sió-khe kháu, pha-tiāⁿ tī hia. Hit-sî tú-hó tiòng-lâu, chûn-tiúⁿ tō kā tn̂g-théng kò kàu tong-chho͘ góa kò pâi-á khò-hōaⁿ ê só͘-chāi, chia tú-hó tī siâⁿ-pó ê mn̂g-kha kháu.

Chi̍t khai-sí, chit-kiāⁿ hí-sū hiám-á hō͘ góa hoaⁿ-hí kah boeh hūn-khì, in-ūi góa khòaⁿ tio̍h góa thoat-hiám ê tāi-chì í-keng lâi kàu ka-tī chhiú-tiong, it-chhè sūn-lī, chi̍t-chiah tōa-chûn chún-pī boeh chài góa kàu jīm-hô siūⁿ boeh khì ê só͘-chāi. Keng-kòe chi̍t-tōaⁿ sî-kan, góa kóng bē-chhut ōe lâi ìn i. Nā m̄-sī chûn-tiúⁿ ê chhiú ân-ân kā góa lám tio̍h, góa tiāⁿ-tio̍h ē un-lo̍h thô͘-kha. Chit sî-chūn, chûn-tiúⁿ hām góa kāng-khoán thiòng, m̄-koh bô kàu góa hit-ê thêng-tō͘. I tùi góa kóng chē-chē chhin-chhiat, un-jiû ê ōe, bo̍k-tek sī boeh hō͘ góa ún-tēng sim-chêng, chheng-chhéⁿ cheng-sîn. M̄-koh góa sim-lāi chhiong-móa kek-tōng, soah sió-khóa chhò-loān, àn-nāi bē-lo̍h. Lo̍h-bóe, ba̍k-sái piàⁿ chhut-lâi, kòe chi̍t-khùn liáu-āu, góa chiah koh ū hoat-tō͘ kóng-ōe. Chit-sî, ōaⁿ góa lám tiâu chûn-tiúⁿ, kā i tòng-chò góa ê kiù-miā un-jîn. Góa kā i kóng, góa kā i khòaⁿ chò sī Thiⁿ-kong phài lâi kiù góa ê lâng; koh kóng, chit-kiāⁿ tāi-chì ê keng-kòe chin-chiàⁿ sī chi̍t liân-sòa ê kî-chek. Che mā chèng-bêng, bêng-bêng tiong, ū chi̍t-chióng Thiⁿ-ì teh chi-phòe sè-kài, mā ū chi̍t-chióng Le̍k-liōng khòaⁿ ē-tio̍h sè-kài siōng iâu-oán ê só͘-chāi, chí-iàu I goān-ì, tō ē-tàng chín-kiù put-hēng ê lâng. 18.6 你 ê 船 tī hia

船長今無啥困難, 只要 kā 兩隻小船準備好勢, kā 其中一隻 ê 破空補好, koh 安排人員上船 tō 會使 ah. 伊派伊 ê 旅客做其中一隻小船 ê 船長, 𤆬 4 个人. 伊家己, 大副, 以及其他 5 人坐另外彼隻. In kā 代誌辦 kah 真順利, tī 半暝已經來到大船邊.

一下到 tī 船邊喝聲聽會著 ê 時, 伊 tō 命令彼个叫 Robinson ê 水手 kā in 喝, 講 in 已經𤆬人 hām 小船轉來 ah, in 開袂少時間才揣著人, 等等這款 ê 話, án-ne ná kap in 話仙 ná 靠倚大船. 小船一下靠到大船, 船長 hām 大副先扎銃上船, 一下 tō kā 二副 kap 木匠 kō͘ 銃柄頭摃死, 綴 tī 後壁 ê 人 mā lóng 鬥出力. 真緊, in 掠著主甲板 kap 副甲板頂其他 ê 人, koh kā 艙門關好, kā 船艙內面 ê 人關 tī hia. 這時, 另外彼隻小船 ê 人, mā ùi 船頭 ê 鐵索 peh 起來, 佔領船頭 hām 通向灶跤 ê 門口, kā tī 灶跤拄著 ê 三人掠做俘虜.

Án-ne 做了後, koh 確保甲板安全, 船長命令大副𤆬三个人挵門入去後甲板艙房, 去 hia 掠 teh 睏 ê 反叛者新船長. 這時, 新船長聽著警報, 已經起床, hām 兩个船員 kap 一个查埔囡仔, 手內 lóng 有銃. Tī 大副 kō͘ 一支鐵支 kā 門撬開 ê 時, 新船長 hām 手下無管一切向 in 開銃. Musket 銃子拍斷大副 ê 手骨, mā 傷著其他兩个人, m̄-koh 無拍死人.

大副喝聲叫人來支援, m̄-koh 隨傱入去船長室, kō͘ 手銃拍向新船長 ê 頭; 銃子 ùi 伊 ê 喙入去, koh ùi 一爿耳空後壁出來, 伊一句話 to 無 koh 講 ah. 看著 án-ne, 其他 ê 人 lóng 投降 ah. 大船自 án-ne 確確實實奪轉來 ah, 無 koh 犧牲任何一條人命.

一旦奪船成功, 船長下令連拍 7 銃. Che 是我 kap 伊約定 ê 信號, 通知我代誌成功. 當然, 你 mā 同意, 聽著這我誠歡喜, 因為我一直坐 tī 岸邊等待這个信號, 差不多一直等到半暝欲倚兩點.

清楚聽著信號了, 我 tō 倒落來睏. 這日我有夠忝, 所以睏 kah 真落眠, 一直到聽著一个銃聲 kā 我嚇一驚, 隨緊起床. 我聽著有人叫我 "總督! 總督!" 我隨知, he 是船長, tō peh 上山頂, 看著伊徛 tī hia, 手指大船, 然後 kā 我規个攬著. 

"我親愛 ê 朋友 hām 救命恩人," 伊講, "你 ê 船 tī hia, he 是你 ê 船, 阮 hām 船頂 ê 一切 lóng 是你 ê."

我攑目看大船, 看伊停 tī 離岸無半 mai [800 米] ê 所在. 原來船長奪船成功了後, 看天氣好, tō 起碇, kā 駛到小溪口, 拋碇 tī hia. 彼時拄好漲流, 船長 tō kā 長艇划到當初我划排仔靠岸 ê 所在, chia 拄好 tī 城堡 ê 門跤口.

一開始, 這件喜事險仔予我歡喜 kah 欲昏去, 因為我看著我脫險 ê 代誌已經來到家己手中, 一切順利, 一隻大船準備欲載我到任何想欲去 ê 所在. 經過一段時間, 我講袂出話來應伊. 若毋是船長 ê 手 ân-ân kā 我攬著, 我定著會 un 落塗跤. 伊看出我 ê 著驚, 隨 ùi lak 袋仔扲一个矸仔, 予我啉伊為我扎來 ê 甜藥酒.

啉了後, 我坐 tī 塗跤, 雖罔感覺較清醒, 著 koh 等一睏, 我才講會出話. 這時陣, 船長 hām 我仝款暢, m̄-koh 無到我彼个程度. 伊對我講濟濟親切, 溫柔 ê 話, 目的是欲予我穩定心情, 清醒精神. M̄-koh 我心內充滿激動, 煞小可錯亂, 按奈袂落. 落尾, 目屎拚出來, 過一睏了後, 我才 koh 有法度講話. 這時, 換我攬牢船長, kā 伊當做我 ê 救命恩人. 阮兩人 lóng 歡喜 kah 大聲喝咻.

我 kā 伊講, 我 kā 伊看做是天公派來救我 ê 人; koh 講, 這件代誌 ê 經過真正是一連紲 ê 奇蹟. Che mā 證明, 冥冥中, 有一種天意 teh 支配世界, mā 有一種力量看會著世界上遙遠 ê 所在, 只要伊願意, tō 會當拯救不幸 ê 人. 我無袂記得感謝天. 啥款 ê 心袂對伊感恩 ah? -- tī 這个荒島, tī 這種孤絕 ê 狀況, kō͘ 神奇 ê 方式予我無枵死, ùi hia 我一擺 koh 一擺得著解救.

The captain now had no difficulty before him, but to furnish his two boats, stop the breach of one, and man them. He made his passenger captain of one, with four of the men; and himself, his mate, and five more, went in the other; and they contrived their business very well, for they came up to the ship about midnight. /

As soon as they came within call of the ship, he made Robinson hail them, and tell them they had brought off the men and the boat, but that it was a long time before they had found them, and the like, holding them in a chat till they came to the ship’s side; when the captain and the mate entering first with their arms, immediately knocked down the second mate and carpenter with the butt-end of their muskets, being very faithfully seconded by their men; they secured all the rest that were upon the main and quarter decks, and began to fasten the hatches, to keep them down that were below; when the other boat and their men, entering at the forechains, secured the forecastle of the ship, and the scuttle which went down into the cook-room, making three men they found there prisoners. /

When this was done, and all safe upon deck, the captain ordered the mate, with three men, to break into the round-house, where the new rebel captain lay, who, having taken the alarm, had got up, and with two men and a boy had got firearms in their hands; and when the mate, with a crow, split open the door, the new captain and his men fired boldly among them, and wounded the mate with a musket ball, which broke his arm, and wounded two more of the men, but killed nobody/

The mate, calling for help, rushed, however, into the round-house, wounded as he was, and, with his pistol, shot the new captain through the head, the bullet entering at his mouth, and came out again behind one of his ears, so that he never spoke a word more: upon which the rest yielded, and the ship was taken effectually, without any more lives lost.

As soon as the ship was thus secured, the captain ordered seven guns to be fired, which was the signal agreed upon with me to give me notice of his success, which, you may be sure, I was very glad to hear, having sat watching upon the shore for it till near two o’clock in the morning. /

Having thus heard the signal plainly, I laid me down; and it having been a day of great fatigue to me, I slept very sound, till I was surprised with the noise of a gun; and presently starting up, I heard a man call me by the name of “Governor! Governor!” and presently I knew the captain’s voice; when, climbing up to the top of the hill, there he stood, and, pointing to the ship, he embraced me in his arms, 

“My dear friend and deliverer,” says he, “there’s your ship; for she is all yours, and so are we, and all that belong to her.” 

I cast my eyes to the ship, and there she rode, within little more than half a mile of the shore; for they had weighed her anchor as soon as they were masters of her, and, the weather being fair, had brought her to an anchor just against the mouth of the little creek; and the tide being up, the captain had brought the pinnace in near the place where I had first landed my rafts, and so landed just at my door. /

I was at first ready to sink down with the surprise; for I saw my deliverance, indeed, visibly put into my hands, all things easy, and a large ship just ready to carry me away whither I pleased to go. At first, for some time, I was not able to answer him one word; but as he had taken me in his arms I held fast by him, or I should have fallen to the ground. He perceived the surprise, and immediately pulled a bottle out of his pocket and gave me a dram of cordial, which he had brought on purpose for me. /

After I had drunk it, I sat down upon the ground; and though it brought me to myself, yet it was a good while before I could speak a word to him. All this time the poor man was in as great an ecstasy as I, only not under any surprise as I was; and he said a thousand kind and tender things to me, to compose and bring me to myself; but such was the flood of joy in my breast, that it put all my spirits into confusion: at last it broke out into tears, and in a little while after I recovered my speech; I then took my turn, and embraced him as my deliverer, and we rejoiced together. /

I told him I looked upon him as a man sent by Heaven to deliver me, and that the whole transaction seemed to be a chain of wonders; that such things as these were the testimonies we had of a secret hand of Providence governing the world, and an evidence that the eye of an infinite Power could search into the remotest corner of the world, and send help to the miserable whenever He pleased. I forgot not to lift up my heart in thankfulness to Heaven; and what heart could forbear to bless Him, who had not only in a miraculous manner provided for me in such a wilderness, and in such a desolate condition, but from whom every deliverance must always be acknowledged to proceed.

Chit-chân tāi kau hō͘ Friday hām hit nn̄g-ê kap chûn-tiúⁿ tâng-chê chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ ê lâng khì pān.

In kā in sàng kàu soaⁿ-tōng, ná-chhiūⁿ kā in sàng ji̍p kaⁿ. Khak-si̍t, hit só͘-chāi ū-kàu chhi-liâng, iû-kî tùi in chit-chióng chōng-hóng ê lâng. Góa koh bēng-lēng, kā kî-thaⁿ lâng sàng khì chng-kha ê liâu-á, its góa ê pia̍t-chong. Hit-tah pún-lâi tō ū ûi-chhiûⁿ, chiah-ê lâng koh lóng siū-pa̍k, khì hia chin an-choân, in-ūi in ê miā-ūn iû in ê hêng-ûi koat-tēng.

Kàu chá-khí, góa phài chûn-tiúⁿ khì kap in kau-tâm, bo̍k-tek sī khì chhì-thàm in, jiân-āu tńg-lâi kā góa kóng, kám ē-tit sìn-jīm in tâng-chê khì toa̍t tōa chûn. I kā in kóng-khí i siū-tio̍h ê siong-hāi, í-ki̍p chit-chūn in ê chhú-kéng. I koh kā in kóng, sui-bóng bo̍k-chêng chóng-tok í-keng jiâu in ê miā, m̄-koh nā sàng tńg Eng-kok, in iáu-sī ē hông pa̍k thih-liān tiàu-sí. M̄-koh, jû-kó in goān-ì chham-ka toa̍t-chûn ê chèng-gī hêng-tōng, i it-tēng chhéng-kiû chóng-tok sià-bián in.

Chhìn-chhái lâng mā ioh ē-tio̍h, tī chit-khoán chêng-hêng, tùi chit-ê kiàn-gī tiāⁿ-tio̍h ē chiap-siū. In kūi-lo̍h tī chûn-tiúⁿ bīn-chêng, khó͘-khó͘ ai-kiû, tah-èng tiong-sim hāu-lô, kàu chòe-āu chi̍t-tih hoeh. Koh kóng, in lóng kám-kek i kiù in ê miā, goān-ì tòe i kàu sè-kài jīm-hô só͘-chāi, boeh kui sì-lâng kā i tòng-chò lāu-pē khòaⁿ-thāi.

"Chin hó," chûn-tiúⁿ kóng, "góa taⁿ tō khì kā chóng-tok pò-kò lín ê kóng-hoat, khòaⁿ án-chóaⁿ khǹg i tông-ì."

Chŏaⁿ, i kā hoat-hiān ê hit-chióng khì-hun kóng hō͘ góa thiaⁿ, i chin-chiàⁿ siong-sìn in lóng ē tùi i hau-tiong.

M̄-koh, ūi-tio̍h pó-hiám khí-kiàn, góa kiò chûn-tiúⁿ koh kiâⁿ chi̍t-chōa, ùi 7-lâng tiong-kan kéng 5-lâng, koh kā hiah-ê lâng kóng, i bô khiàm kha-chhiú, taⁿ chí-iàu kéng 5-lâng chò i ê chō͘-chhiú, chóng-tok boeh kā chhun-ê hit 2-lâng hām í-keng sàng khì siâⁿ-pó (its soaⁿ-tōng) hit 3-ê lâu lo̍h-lâi chò jîn-chit, thang pó-chèng chham-ka hêng-tōng hit 5-lâng ê tiong-sêng. In nā tī hêng-tōng ê sî bô tiong-sêng, lâu tī tó-siōng ê 5-lâng tō ē tī hōaⁿ-piⁿ kō͘ thih-liān tiàu-sí. Che khòaⁿ sī chin giâm-lē, hō͘ in chai-iáⁿ chóng-tok chin téng-chin. Tān-sī, tî-liáu chiap-siū, in mā bô kî-thaⁿ ê hoat-tō͘. Kiat-kó, hit kúi-ê hu-ló͘ tian-tò kap chûn-tiúⁿ pêⁿ jīn-chin, it-chài khǹg kî-thaⁿ 5-lâng tio̍h hó-hó chīn in ê chek-jīm.

Goán chhut-cheng ê peng-le̍k taⁿ sī án-ne an-pâi: 1) chûn-tiúⁿ, tōa-hù, lí-kheh; 2) tē-it pang chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ kî-tiong ê nn̄g-ê chúi-chhiú, góa ùi chûn-tiúⁿ hia chai in ê phín-hēng, chá í-keng hôe-ho̍k in ê chū-iû, mā kau hō͘ in bú-khì; 3) lēng-gōa 2-ê it-ti̍t pa̍k-tio̍h koaiⁿ tī liâu-á, thiaⁿ chûn-tiúⁿ kiàn-gī, góa kā in pàng-khui; 4) chòe-āu kèng hit 5-lâng. Lóng-chóng 12-lâng, lēng-gōa ū 5-lâng koaiⁿ tī soaⁿ-tōng chò jîn-chit.

Góa mn̄g chûn-tiúⁿ, kám goān-ì chhōa chi̍t-tūi lâng mō͘-hiám khì siu-hok tōa chûn. Góa jīn-ûi, góa hām Friday bô sek-ha̍p chhap chit-chân tāi-chì, in-ūi tó-siōng iáu ū 7-lâng, ū-kàu goán bô-êng, tio̍h hun-khui koán-kò͘, iā-tio̍h kiong-èng in ím-si̍t. 18.5 我 kā 船長講奪船計畫

船長一下到, 我 tō kā 伊講奪船計畫, he 伊真認同, 決定明仔早起 tō 欲實施. M̄-koh, 為著 kā 計畫做 kah 較好, 較確定會成功, 我 kā 伊講, 咱著 kā 俘虜分散, 伊著先去縛 Atkins 和另外兩个上歹 ê 俘虜, kā 押去拘留另外幾人 ê 山洞. 這層代交予 Friday 和 hit 兩个 kap 船長同齊上岸 ê 人去辦.

In kā in 送到山洞, ná 像 kā in 送入監. 確實, 彼所在有夠悽涼, 尤其對 in 這種狀況 ê 人. 我 koh 命令, kā 其他人送去庄跤 ê 寮仔, its 我 ê 別莊. 彼搭本來 tō 有圍牆, chiah-ê 人 koh lóng 受縛, 去 hia 真安全, 因為 in ê 命運由 in ê 行為決定.

到早起, 我派船長去 kap in 交談, 目的是去試探 in, 然後轉來 kā 我講, 敢會得信任 in 同齊去奪大船. 伊 kā in 講起伊受著 ê 傷害, 以及這陣 in ê 處境. 伊 koh kā in 講, 雖罔目前總督已經饒 in ê 命, m̄-koh 若送轉英國, in 猶是會 hông 縛鐵鍊吊死. M̄-koh, 如果 in 願意參加奪船 ê 正義行動, 伊一定請求總督赦免 in.

凊彩人 mā 臆會著, tī 這款情形, 對這个建議定著會接受. In 跪落 tī 船長面前, 苦苦哀求, 答應忠心效勞, 到最後一滴血. Koh 講, in lóng 感激伊救 in ê 命, 願意綴伊到世界任何所在, 欲規世人 kā 伊當做老爸看待.

"真好," 船長講, "我今 tō 去 kā 總督報告恁 ê 講法, 看按怎勸伊同意."

Chŏaⁿ, 伊 kā 發現 ê 彼種氣氛講予我聽, 伊真正相信 in lóng 會對伊效忠.

M̄-koh, 為著保險起見, 我叫船長 koh 行一逝, ùi 7 人中間揀 5 人, koh kā hiah-ê 人講, 伊無欠跤手, 今只要揀 5 人做伊 ê 助手, 總督欲 kā 賰 ê hit 2 人和已經送去城堡 (its 山洞) hit 3 个留落來做人質, thang 保證參加行動 hit 5 人 ê 忠誠. In 若 tī 行動 ê 時無忠誠, 留 tī 島上 ê 5 人 tō 會 tī 岸邊 kō͘ 鐵鍊吊死. Che 看是真嚴厲, 予 in 知影總督真頂真. 但是, 除了接受, in mā 無其他 ê 法度. 結果, hit 幾个俘虜顛倒 kap 船長平認真, 一再勸其他 5 人著好好盡 in ê 責任.

阮出征 ê 兵力今是 án-ne 安排: 1) 船長, 大副, 旅客; 2) 第一幫上岸其中 ê 兩个水手, 我 ùi 船長 hia 知 in ê 品行, 早已經回復 in ê 自由, mā 交予 in 武器; 3) 另外 2 个一直縛著關 tī 寮仔, 聽船長建議, 我 kā in 放開; 4) 最後揀 hit 5 人. 攏總 12 人, 另外有 5 人關 tī 山洞做人質.

我問船長, 敢願意𤆬一隊人冒險去收復大船. 我認為, 我和 Friday 無適合 chhap 這層代誌, 因為島上猶有 7 人, 有夠阮無閒, 著分開管顧, 也著供應 in 飲食. 我決定好好管顧關 tī 山洞 hit 5 人, 派 Friday 一工去兩改, 送 chia̍h-mi̍h 去. 我叫其他 hit 2 人先 kā chia̍h-mi̍h 搬到一个指定 ê 地點, 才予 Friday 送入去. 

我出現 tī hit 兩个人質面前 ê 時, 船長和我同齊. 船長 kā in 介紹, 講我是總督派來監視 in ê. 總督 ê 命令是, 無我 ê 指示, in 袂使烏白行動. 若亂來, 著愛掠起來, 送入城堡, kō͘ 鐵鍊仔縛. Chŏaⁿ, 無予 in 知, 我 tō 是總督, 我今是 kō͘ 另一个人 ê 身份出現, 不時向 in 講起總督, 駐軍, 城堡等等 ê 代誌.

Upon the captain coming to me, I told him my project for seizing the ship, which he liked wonderfully well, and resolved to put it in execution the next morning. But, in order to execute it with more art, and to be secure of success, I told him we must divide the prisoners, and that he should go and take Atkins, and two more of the worst of them, and send them pinioned to the cave where the others lay. This was committed to Friday and the two men who came on shore with the captain. /

They conveyed them to the cave as to a prison: and it was, indeed, a dismal place, especially to men in their condition. The others I ordered to my bower, as I called it, of which I have given a full description: and as it was fenced in, and they pinioned, the place was secure enough, considering they were upon their behaviour.

To these in the morning I sent the captain, who was to enter into a parley with them; in a word, to try them, and tell me whether he thought they might be trusted or not to go on board and surprise the ship. He talked to them of the injury done him, of the condition they were brought to, and that though the governor had given them quarter for their lives as to the present action, yet that if they were sent to England they would all be hanged in chains; but that if they would join in so just an attempt as to recover the ship, he would have the governor’s engagement for their pardon.

Any one may guess how readily such a proposal would be accepted by men in their condition; they fell down on their knees to the captain, and promised, with the deepest imprecations, that they would be faithful to him to the last drop, and that they should owe their lives to him, and would go with him all over the world; that they would own him as a father to them as long as they lived. 

“Well,” says the captain, “I must go and tell the governor what you say, and see what I can do to bring him to consent to it.” 

So he brought me an account of the temper he found them in, and that he verily believed they would be faithful. /

However, that we might be very secure, I told him he should go back again and choose out those five, and tell them, that they might see he did not want men, that he would take out those five to be his assistants, and that the governor would keep the other two, and the three that were sent prisoners to the castle (my cave), as hostages for the fidelity of those five; and that if they proved unfaithful in the execution, the five hostages should be hanged in chains alive on the shore. This looked severe, and convinced them that the governor was in earnest; however, they had no way left them but to accept it; and it was now the business of the prisoners, as much as of the captain, to persuade the other five to do their duty.

Our strength was now thus ordered for the expedition: first, the captain, his mate, and passenger; second, the two prisoners of the first gang, to whom, having their character from the captain, I had given their liberty, and trusted them with arms; third, the other two that I had kept till now in my bower, pinioned, but on the captain’s motion had now released; fourth, these five released at last; so that there were twelve in all, besides five we kept prisoners in the cave for hostages.

I asked the captain if he was willing to venture with these hands on board the ship; but as for me and my man Friday, I did not think it was proper for us to stir, having seven men left behind; and it was employment enough for us to keep them asunder, and supply them with victuals. As to the five in the cave, I resolved to keep them fast, but Friday went in twice a day to them, to supply them with necessaries; and I made the other two carry provisions to a certain distance, where Friday was to take them.

When I showed myself to the two hostages, it was with the captain, who told them I was the person the governor had ordered to look after them; and that it was the governor’s pleasure they should not stir anywhere but by my direction; that if they did, they would be fetched into the castle, and be laid in irons: so that as we never suffered them to see me as governor, I now appeared as another person, and spoke of the governor, the garrison, the castle, and the like, upon all occasions.

"In ē jiâu goán ê miā bô?" Tom Smith mn̄g, "nā án-ne, goán tō tâu-hâng."

"Góa khì mn̄g khòaⁿ-māi, lín nā khéng tâu-hâng," Robinson kóng.

Chū án-ne, i mn̄g chûn-tiúⁿ, chit-sî chûn-tiúⁿ chhin-sin chhut-siaⁿ:

Chŏaⁿ, góa tī o͘-àm tiong ùi in hia thè hā, bián-tit in khòaⁿ tio̍h góa sī siáⁿ-khoán ê chóng-tok, jiân-āu chiah kiò chûn-tiúⁿ kàu góa sin-piⁿ. Góa kiò chûn-tiúⁿ ê sî, in-ūi keh chi̍t-tōaⁿ kī-lī, tō phài chi̍t-ê lâng khì thoân-ōe, tùi chûn-tiúⁿ kóng:

"Chûn-tiúⁿ, su-lēng kiò lí," chûn-tiúⁿ sûi ìn kóng:

"Chhiáⁿ kā su-lēng kok-hā pò-kò, góa sûi lâi."

Án-ne, koh-khah hō͘ in siong-sìn, su-lēng hām i 50-miâ pō͘-hā tō tī chit hū-kīn.

18.4 In lóng 放落武器, 求饒命

In 向前爬無偌久, 水手長 tō 𤆬另外兩个水手向 in chia 行過來. 水手長是這擺反叛 ê 𤆬頭, 今閣較是懊惱 koh 失志. 船長急欲彈這个鱸鰻頭, 無等伊行倚 kā 看較真, 因為拄才干焦是憑伊 ê 講話聲做判斷, tō 和 Friday 同齊跳起來向 in 開銃. 

水手長當場現死. 另一个身軀著銃, 倒 tī 水手長身邊, 過一兩點鐘才死. 第三个, 起跤欲走. 聽著銃聲, 我 tō 𤆬全軍出發. 全軍 8 个人, its 我是總司令, Friday 是副司令, koh 有船長和伊兩个部下, 以及 3 个阮信任 ê 俘虜, 阮 mā 有交銃予 in.

阮 tī 烏暗中進攻, 予 in 看無阮 ê 人數. 我叫 in 留 tī 船彼个人, 今是阮 ê 人, 叫 in ê 名, 看 án-ne 有法度 kap in 談判無, 凡勢會當勸 in 投降. 結果真合阮 ê 意. 事實, mā 想會到, tī in 彼時 ê 狀況, in 非常願意投降. 所以, 伊大聲向其中一人叫: 

"Tom Smith! Tom Smith!" Tom Smith 隨 kā 應: 

"He 敢是 Robinson?" 因為伊 ká-ná 會認得彼个聲. 

另 hit 人回答: 

"是 lah, 是 lah. 看神 ê 面子, Tom Smith, 放落武器, 投降, 若無, 恁 lóng 死定著 ah."

"阮著向 siáng 投降? In tī 佗位?" Smith koh 問.

"In tī chia," 伊講, "阮船長 tī chia, 𤆬 50 人, 已經揣恁 2 點鐘 ah. 水手長已經 hông 拍死, Will Fry 受傷, á 我是俘虜. 恁若毋投降, 恁 lóng 穩死 ah."

"In 會饒阮 ê 命無?" Tom Smith 問, "若 án-ne, 阮 tō 投降."

"我去問看覓, 恁若肯投降," Robinson 講.

自 án-ne, 伊問船長, 這時船長親身出聲:

"恁, Smith, 恁會認得我 ê 聲. 恁若隨放落武器, 投降, 恁 lóng 會得活命, m̄-koh Will Atkins 掠外."

聽到 chia, Will Atkins 喝聲:

"看神 ê 面子, 船長 ah, 饒我一命 lah. 我做啥 ah? In lóng 和我平歹." 事實, 代誌毋是 án-ne. 因為照彼時 ê 狀況來看, tī in 這擺 ê 反叛, 是 Will Atkins 第一个掠船長, 對船長真野蠻, 縛伊 ê 雙手, koh 對伊講侮辱 ê 言語. 這時, 船長 kā 伊講, 伊一定著首先放落武器, 然後聽候總督 ê 發落. 伊所講 ê 總督, tō 是我 lah, 因為 in lóng 叫我總督.

總講, in lóng 放落武器, 請求饒命. Chŏaⁿ, 我派彼个和 in 談判 ê 人 kap 另外兩个水手, kā in lóng 縛起來. 然後我 ê 50 人大軍, 事實, 連 hit 三人攏總才 8 人, 向前 kā in 和彼隻小船 lóng 扣押. 干焦我和另外一人, 因為身份 ê 關係, 這時無出面.

阮閣來 ê 工課是修理小船, 以及思考按怎奪大船. Á 船長這時有時間 kap in 交談. 伊 kā in 講一大堆道理, 講 in 對待伊 ê 態度 siuⁿ 邪惡, in ê 居心 siuⁿ 惡毒, koh 教示 in 講, in ê 行為定著會帶予家己不幸 kap 災難, 甚至送上刑台. In lóng 表現 kah 真後悔, 苦苦哀求饒命.

有關這點, 伊 kā in 講, in 毋是伊 ê 俘虜, 是本島司令 ê 俘虜. 伊講, in 想講 kā 伊送到一个無人蹛 ê 荒島, m̄-koh 神愛欲 in kā 送到一个有人蹛 ê 島, 島上 koh 有一个英國總督. 總督若認為必要, 會使 kā in lóng 吊死. M̄-koh, 今伊決定欲饒赦 in, 大概是欲 kā in 送轉英國接受正義 ê 發落, M̄-koh, Atkins 掠外, 總督命令講, Atkins 準備受死, 明仔早起欲 kā 伊吊死.

雖罔 chiah-ê 講法是伊家己編 ê, m̄-koh 已經達到意料 ê 效果. Atkins 跪落來, 哀求船長向總督求情, 饒伊一命. 其他 ê 人 mā lóng 求伊, 看 tī 神 ê 面子, 毋通 kā in 送轉英國.

這時我忽然想著, 阮得救 ê 時陣到 ah. 我 kā chiah-ê 人爭取過來, in tō 會真心去奪大船. Chŏaⁿ, 我 tī 烏暗中 ùi in hia 退下, 免得 in 看著我是啥款 ê 總督, 然後才叫船長到我身邊. 我叫船長 ê 時, 因為隔一段距離, tō 派一个人去傳話, 對船長講:

"船長, 司令叫你," 船長隨應講:

"請 kā 司令閣下報告, 我隨來."

Án-ne, 閣較予 in 相信, 司令和伊 50 名部下 tō tī 這附近.

They had not been long in that posture when the boatswain, who was the principal ringleader of the mutiny, and had now shown himself the most dejected and dispirited of all the rest, came walking towards them, with two more of the crew; the captain was so eager at having this principal rogue so much in his power, that he could hardly have patience to let him come so near as to be sure of him, for they only heard his tongue before: but when they came nearer, the captain and Friday, starting up on their feet, let fly at them. /

The boatswain was killed upon the spot: the next man was shot in the body, and fell just by him, though he did not die till an hour or two after; and the third ran for it. At the noise of the fire I immediately advanced with my whole army, which was now eight men, viz. myself, generalissimo; Friday, my lieutenant-general; the captain and his two men, and the three prisoners of war whom we had trusted with arms. /

We came upon them, indeed, in the dark, so that they could not see our number; and I made the man they had left in the boat, who was now one of us, to call them by name, to try if I could bring them to a parley, and so perhaps might reduce them to terms; which fell out just as we desired: for indeed it was easy to think, as their condition then was, they would be very willing to capitulate. So he calls out as loud as he could to one of them, 

“Tom Smith! Tom Smith!”

 Tom Smith answered immediately, “Is that Robinson?” for it seems he knew the voice. /

The other answered, 

“Ay, ay; for God’s sake, Tom Smith, throw down your arms and yield, or you are all dead men this moment.” 

“Who must we yield to? Where are they?” says Smith again. 

“Here they are,” says he; “here’s our captain and fifty men with him, have been hunting you these two hours; the boatswain is killed; Will Fry is wounded, and I am a prisoner; and if you do not yield you are all lost.” 

“Will they give us quarter, then?” says Tom Smith, “and we will yield.” 

“I’ll go and ask, if you promise to yield,” said Robinson: so he asked the captain, and the captain himself then calls out, 

“You, Smith, you know my voice; if you lay down your arms immediately and submit, you shall have your lives, all but Will Atkins.”

Upon this Will Atkins cried out, 

“For God’s sake, captain, give me quarter; what have I done? They have all been as bad as I:” which, by the way, was not true; for it seems this Will Atkins was the first man that laid hold of the captain when they first mutinied, and used him barbarously in tying his hands and giving him injurious language. However, the captain told him he must lay down his arms at discretion, and trust to the governor’s mercy: by which he meant me, for they all called me governor. /

In a word, they all laid down their arms and begged their lives; and I sent the man that had parleyed with them, and two more, who bound them all; and then my great army of fifty men, which, with those three, were in all but eight, came up and seized upon them, and upon their boat; only that I kept myself and one more out of sight for reasons of state.

Our next work was to repair the boat, and think of seizing the ship: and as for the captain, now he had leisure to parley with them, he expostulated with them upon the villainy of their practices with him, and upon the further wickedness of their design, and how certainly it must bring them to misery and distress in the end, and perhaps to the gallows. They all appeared very penitent, and begged hard for their lives. /

As for that, he told them they were not his prisoners, but the commander’s of the island; that they thought they had set him on shore in a barren, uninhabited island; but it had pleased God so to direct them that it was inhabited, and that the governor was an Englishman; that he might hang them all there, if he pleased; but as he had given them all quarter, he supposed he would send them to England, to be dealt with there as justice required, except Atkins, whom he was commanded by the governor to advise to prepare for death, for that he would be hanged in the morning.

Though this was all but a fiction of his own, yet it had its desired effect; Atkins fell upon his knees to beg the captain to intercede with the governor for his life; and all the rest begged of him, for God’s sake, that they might not be sent to England.

It now occurred to me that the time of our deliverance was come, and that it would be a most easy thing to bring these fellows in to be hearty in getting possession of the ship; so I retired in the dark from them, that they might not see what kind of a governor they had, and called the captain to me; when I called, at a good distance, one of the men was ordered to speak again, and say to the captain, 

“Captain, the commander calls for you;” and presently the captain replied, 

“Tell his excellency I am just coming.” 

This more perfectly amazed them, and they all believed that the commander was just by, with his fifty men.
