Goán kau-tâm chi̍t-khùn, chûn-tiúⁿ kóng, i ū chah kóa tiám-sim kap tán-lō͘ boeh hō͘ góa, che sī chûn-téng the̍h ê, sī hiah-ê pà-chiàm chûn ê ok-tô͘ chhiúⁿ chhun ê. Kóng kàu chia, i tō hiòng sió-chûn hoah-siaⁿ, kiò in kā hiàn hō͘ chóng-tok ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ poaⁿ chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ. Khak-si̍t, che sī chi̍t-hūn kāu lé, bē-su boeh lâu góa kè-sio̍k tòa tī tó-siōng, bô boeh chài góa cháu.
Siú-sian, i chah hō͘ góa 1 siuⁿ ko-kip ê tiⁿ io̍h-chiú, 6 tōa kan Madeira pe̍h pô-tô chíu, (múi-kan 2 quart [2.3 liter]), 2 pōng [907 g] siōng-hó hun-chháu, 12 tè chûn-téng ê hó gû-bah, 6 tè ti-bah, 1-tē tāu-á, hām tāi-iok 1 hundred-weight [50.8 kg] piáⁿ-koaⁿ. I koh chah hō͘ góa 1 siuⁿ thn̂g, 1 siuⁿ mī-hún, 1 tē móa-móa ê lemon, 2 kan lime-chiap, koh chē-chē kî-thaⁿ mi̍h-kiāⁿ. Án-ne í-gōa, tùi góa koh-khah ū lō͘-iōng ê sī, i chah hō͘ góa 6 niá sin siatchuh, 6 tiâu siōng-hó ê ām-kin, 2 siang chhiú-thò, 1 siang phôe-ê, 1 téng bō-á, 1 siang tn̂g boe̍h-á, koh ū 1 su pún-lâi i ka-tī chhēng ê se-chong, iáu-koh sin tiám-tiám. Chóng-kóng chi̍t-kù, ùi thâu kàu kha chhēng-ê, i lóng thè góa khoán kah hó-sè liu-liu.
Siūⁿ tō chai, tùi góa chit-khoán chōng-hóng ê lâng lâi kóng, che sī kài chhin-chhiat koh hō͘ lâng hoaⁿ-hí ê lé-mi̍h. M̄-koh, kiò góa kái chhēng chit-su chong-pān, thâu-khí-seng soah sī sè-kài m̄-bat ū ê hit-chióng bē sóng-khoài, bē chū-chāi, koh bē chū-jiân.
Sàng-lé ê gî-sek kiat-sok, mi̍h-kiāⁿ mā lóng poaⁿ ji̍p-khì chū-só͘, goán tō khai-sí chham-siông chhú-lí hu-ló͘ ê tāi-chì. Goán tio̍h khó-lī, kám boeh mō͘-hiám chhōa in tòe goán, iû-kî kî-tiong ū nn̄g-lâng, chāi goán khòaⁿ, sī bô io̍h kiù, pún-sèng bē kái ê ok-lâng. Chûn-tiúⁿ kóng, i chai hit nn̄g-lâng sī tōa pháiⁿ-lâng, m̄-bián kā bián-kióng, nā boeh chhōa in, tiāⁿ-tio̍h ài kā tòng-chò hoān-lâng, kòa kha-liâu chhiú-khàu. Tán chûn kàu jīm-hô chi̍t-ê Eng-kok si̍t-bîn-tē, tō kā in kau hō͘ tong-kio̍k hoat-pān. Chāi góa khòaⁿ, chûn-tiúⁿ khak-si̍t tùi che chin bē hòng-sim.
Só͘-tì, góa kā i kóng, jû-kó i tông-ì, góa ē-sái hū-chek khǹg hit nn̄g-lâng, hō͘ in ka-tī thê-gī, chhéng-kiû boeh lâu tī chit-ê tó.
"Án-ne góa siōng hoaⁿ-hí," chûn-tiúⁿ kóng, "góa chin-sim tông-ì."
"Án-ne hó," góa kóng, "góa kiò lâng chhōa in lâi, góa lâi kap in tâm."
Chŏaⁿ, góa hoan-hù Friday hām nn̄g-ê jîn-chit khì chip-hêng chit-hāng jīm-bū. Goân-lâi ê jîn-chit taⁿ lóng tháu-pàng ah, in-ūi in ê tông-phōaⁿ í-keng oân-sêng jīm-bū ah. Góa kiò in khì soaⁿ-tōng, kā koaiⁿ tī hia hit gō͘-lâng, chhiú chiàu-kū pa̍k-tio̍h, chhōa kàu liâu-á, kā koaiⁿ tī hia, tán góa khì chhú-tì.
Kòe chi̍t-khùn, góa chhēng sin saⁿ lâi-kàu hia. Chit-sî, góa sī chóng-tok ê sin-hūn. Góa hām chûn-tiúⁿ kap goán ê lâng sio-kìⁿ liáu-āu, góa kiò in kā hit 5-lâng chhōa kàu bīn-chêng lâi. Góa kā in kóng, góa í-keng liáu-kái in tùi-thāi chûn-tiúⁿ ê ok-hêng, án-chóaⁿ kā chûn toa̍t-cháu, chún-pī boeh kè-sio̍k khì chò chhiúⁿ-kiap ê kâu-lāng. M̄-koh, Thiⁿ-ì hō͘ in poa̍h-lo̍h ka-tī thè pa̍t-lâng óe ê hām-chéⁿ.
Góa hō͘ in chai-iáⁿ, tī góa ê chí-hui hā, tōa chûn í-keng toa̍t tńg-lâi ah, taⁿ thêng-khò tī hái-kháu. In liâm-mi tō ē khòaⁿ tio̍h, in hit-ê sin chûn-tiúⁿ í-keng tit-tio̍h ok-hêng ê pò-èng, tiàu tī ûi-koaiⁿ téng teh sī-chiòng. Á nā in neh, góa siūⁿ boeh chai-iáⁿ in iáu ū siáⁿ ōe boeh kóng. Sī án-chóaⁿ góa bô kā in iōng hái-chha̍t hiān-hêng-hoān chhú-koat, che in choa̍t-tùi bē hoâi-gî, góa ū chit-ê khoân-le̍k.
Chit-sî, kî-tiong chi̍t-lâng tāi-piáu ta̍k-ê kóng-ōe. I kóng, in bô siáⁿ ōe hó koh kóng ah. M̄-koh, hông lia̍h ê sî, chûn-tiúⁿ ū tah-èng boeh jiâu in ê miā, taⁿ in tio̍h lê-thâu khún-kiû góa ê khoan-sià. M̄-koh, góa kóng, in-ūi góa í-keng koat-tēng boeh chhōa pō͘-hā lī-khui chit-ê tó, tah chûn-tiúⁿ ê chûn tńg-khì Eng-kok, só͘-í góa m̄-chai tio̍h án-chóaⁿ khoan-sià in. Á nā chûn-tiúⁿ neh, i kan-ta ē-tàng kā in tòng-chò siû-hoān koaiⁿ khí-lâi, chài tńg-khì Eng-kok, kau hō͘ tong-kio̍k í bô͘-hoán kap kiap-chûn ê chōe khì sím-phòaⁿ. He kiat-kó in tiāⁿ-tio̍h chai, tō sī chiūⁿ hêng-tâi. Só͘-tì, góa si̍t-chāi mā m̄-chai ū siáⁿ khah hó ê hoat-tō͘, tî-hui in koat-tēng boeh kā miā-ūn kau hō͘ chit-ê tó.
In nā koat-tēng án-ne, góa pún-lâng bô ì-kiàn, in-ūi hoâiⁿ-ti̍t góa boeh lī-khui ah. In nā boeh lâu lo̍h-lâi, góa ē-sái pàng in chi̍t-tiâu oa̍h-lō͘. Tùi che, in ká-ná chin kám-kek, tō kóng, in kam-goān mō͘-hiám lâu tī chia, mā bô-ài hông sàng khì Eng-kok khì tiàu-sí. Chŏaⁿ, góa tō koat-tēng tāi-chì án-ne pān.

18.7 船長獻予我厚禮
阮交談一睏, 船長講, 伊有扎寡點心 kap 等路欲予我, 這是船頂提 ê, 是 hiah-ê 霸佔船 ê 惡徒搶賰 ê. 講到 chia, 伊 tō 向小船喝聲, 叫 in kā 獻予總督 ê 物件搬上岸. 確實, 這是一份厚禮, 袂輸欲留我繼續蹛 tī 島上, 無欲載我走.
首先, 伊扎予我 1 箱高級 ê 甜藥酒, 6 大矸 Madeira 白 pô-tô 酒, (每矸 2 quart [2.3 liter]), 2 磅 [907 g] 上好薰草, 12 塊船頂 ê 好牛肉, 6 塊豬肉, 1 袋豆仔, 和大約 1 hundred-weight [50.8 kg] 餅乾. 伊 koh 扎予我 1 箱糖, 1 箱麵粉, 1 袋滿滿 ê lemon, 2 矸 lime 汁, koh 濟濟其他物件. Án-ne 以外, 對我閣較有路用 ê 是, 伊扎予我 6 領新 siatchuh, 6 條上好 ê 頷巾, 2 雙手套, 1 雙皮鞋, 1 頂帽仔, 1 雙長襪仔, koh 有 1 軀本來伊家己穿 ê 西裝, 猶閣新點點. 總講一句, ùi 頭到跤穿 ê, 伊 lóng 替我款 kah 好勢 liu-liu.
想 tō 知, 對我這款狀況 ê 人來講, 這是 kài 親切 koh 予人歡喜 ê 禮物. M̄-koh, 叫我改穿這軀裝扮, 頭起先煞是世界 m̄-bat 有 ê 彼種袂爽快, 袂自在, koh 袂自然.
送禮 ê 儀式結束, 物件 mā lóng 搬入去住所, 阮 tō 開始參詳處理俘虜 ê 代誌. 阮著考慮, 敢欲冒險𤆬 in 綴阮, 尤其其中有兩人, 在阮看, 是無藥救, 本性袂改 ê 惡人. 船長講, 伊知 hit 兩人是大歹人, 毋免 kā 勉強, 若欲𤆬 in, 定著愛 kā 當做犯人, 掛跤鐐手銬. 等船到任何一个英國殖民地, tō kā in 交予當局法辦. 在我看, 船長確實對 che 真袂放心.
所致, 我 kā 伊講, 如果伊同意, 我會使負責勸 hit 兩人, 予 in 家己提議, 請求欲留 tī 這个島.
"Án-ne 我上歡喜," 船長講, "我真心同意."
"Án-ne 好," 我講, "我叫人𤆬 in 來, 我來 kap in 談."
Chŏaⁿ, 我吩咐 Friday 和兩个人質去執行這項任務. 原來 ê 人質今 lóng 敨放 ah, 因為 in ê 同伴已經完成任務 ah. 我叫 in 去山洞, kā 關 tī hia hit 五人, 手照舊縛著, 𤆬到寮仔, kā 關 tī hia, 等我去處置.
過一睏, 我穿新衫來到 hia. 這時, 我是總督 ê 身份. 我和船長 kap 阮 ê 人相見了後, 我叫 in kā hit 5 人𤆬到面前來. 我 kā in 講, 我已經了解 in 對待船長 ê 惡行, 按怎 kā 船奪走, 準備欲繼續去做搶劫 ê 猴弄. M̄-koh, 天意予 in 跋落家己替別人挖 ê 陷阱.
我予 in 知影, tī 我 ê 指揮下, 大船已經奪轉來 ah, 今停靠 tī 海口. In liâm-mi tō 會看著, in 彼个新船長已經得著惡行 ê 報應, 吊 tī 桅杆頂 teh 示眾. Á 若 in neh, 我想欲知影 in 猶有啥話欲講. 是按怎我無 kā in 用海賊現行犯處決, che in 絕對袂懷疑, 我有這个權力.
這時, 其中一人代表逐个講話. 伊講, in 無啥話好 koh 講 ah. M̄-koh, hông 掠 ê 時, 船長有答應欲饒 in ê 命, 今 in 著犁頭懇求我 ê 寬赦. M̄-koh, 我講, 因為我已經決定欲𤆬部下離開這个島, 搭船長 ê 船轉去英國, 所以我毋知著按怎寬赦 in. Á 若船長 neh, 伊干焦會當 kā in 當做囚犯關起來, 載轉去英國, 交予當局以謀反 kap 劫船 ê 罪去審判. He 結果 in 定著知, tō 是上刑台. 所致, 我實在 mā 毋知有啥較好 ê 法度, 除非 in 決定欲 kā 命運交予這个島.
In 若決定 án-ne, 我本人無意見, 因為橫直我欲離開 ah. In 若欲留落來, 我會使放 in 一條活路. 對這, in ká-ná 真感激, tō 講, in 甘願冒險留 tī chia, mā 無愛 hông 送去英國去吊死. Chŏaⁿ, 我 tō 決定代誌 án-ne 辦.

When we had talked a while, the captain told me he had brought me some little refreshment, such as the ship afforded, and such as the wretches that had been so long his masters had not plundered him of. Upon this, he called aloud to the boat, and bade his men bring the things ashore that were for the governor; and, indeed, it was a present as if I had been one that was not to be carried away with them, but as if I had been to dwell upon the island still. /
First, he had brought me a case of bottles full of excellent cordial waters, six large bottles of Madeira wine (the bottles held two quarts each), two pounds of excellent good tobacco, twelve good pieces of the ship’s beef, and six pieces of pork, with a bag of peas, and about a hundred-weight of biscuit; he also brought me a box of sugar, a box of flour, a bag full of lemons, and two bottles of lime-juice, and abundance of other things. But besides these, and what was a thousand times more useful to me, he brought me six new clean shirts, six very good neckcloths, two pair of gloves, one pair of shoes, a hat, and one pair of stockings, with a very good suit of clothes of his own, which had been worn but very little: in a word, he clothed me from head to foot. /
It was a very kind and agreeable present, as any one may imagine, to one in my circumstances, but never was anything in the world of that kind so unpleasant, awkward, and uneasy as it was to me to wear such clothes at first.
After these ceremonies were past, and after all his good things were brought into my little apartment, we began to consult what was to be done with the prisoners we had; for it was worth considering whether we might venture to take them with us or no, especially two of them, whom he knew to be incorrigible and refractory to the last degree; and the captain said he knew they were such rogues that there was no obliging them, and if he did carry them away, it must be in irons, as malefactors, to be delivered over to justice at the first English colony he could come to; and I found that the captain himself was very anxious about it. /
Upon this, I told him that, if he desired it, I would undertake to bring the two men he spoke of to make it their own request that he should leave them upon the island.
“I should be very glad of that,” says the captain, “with all my heart.”
“Well,” says I, “I will send for them up and talk with them for you.”
So I caused Friday and the two hostages, for they were now discharged, their comrades having performed their promise; I say, I caused them to go to the cave, and bring up the five men, pinioned as they were, to the bower, and keep them there till I came. /
After some time, I came thither dressed in my new habit; and now I was called governor again. Being all met, and the captain with me, I caused the men to be brought before me, and I told them I had got a full account of their villainous behaviour to the captain, and how they had run away with the ship, and were preparing to commit further robberies, but that Providence had ensnared them in their own ways, and that they were fallen into the pit which they had dug for others. /
I let them know that by my direction the ship had been seized; that she lay now in the road; and they might see by-and-by that their new captain had received the reward of his villainy, and that they would see him hanging at the yard-arm; that, as to them, I wanted to know what they had to say why I should not execute them as pirates taken in the fact, as by my commission they could not doubt but I had authority so to do.
One of them answered in the name of the rest, that they had nothing to say but this, that when they were taken the captain promised them their lives, and they humbly implored my mercy. But I told them I knew not what mercy to show them; for as for myself, I had resolved to quit the island with all my men, and had taken passage with the captain to go to England; and as for the captain, he could not carry them to England other than as prisoners in irons, to be tried for mutiny and running away with the ship; the consequence of which, they must needs know, would be the gallows; so that I could not tell what was best for them, unless they had a mind to take their fate in the island. /
If they desired that, as I had liberty to leave the island, I had some inclination to give them their lives, if they thought they could shift on shore. They seemed very thankful for it, and said they would much rather venture to stay there than be carried to England to be hanged. So I left it on that issue.
