In tú chiūⁿ-chûn, hit-sî Friday hām tōa-hù tō khai-sí tōa-siaⁿ teh hiu. In sûi thiaⁿ tio̍h, tō ìn-siaⁿ, iân hái-hōaⁿ cháu hiòng sai, hiòng in thiaⁿ tio̍h ê siaⁿ, jiân-āu hō͘ sió-khe cha̍h tio̍h, hit-sî khe-chúi chin móa, in bē-tit kòe, tō kiò sió-chûn kò kòe-lâi, tō͘ in kòe-khe. Che, khak-si̍t, lóng tī góa ê ī-liāu lāi-bīn. Tán in kòe-khe liáu-āu, góa hoat-hiān he sió-chûn í-keng ji̍p sió-khe chi̍t tōa-chat, kàu lāi-lio̍k ê chi̍t-ê sió káng-oan. In kiò saⁿ-lâng kî-tiong chi̍t-lâng lo̍h-chûn, tòe in kiâⁿ, lâu nn̄g-lâng tī chûn-lāi, kā chûn pa̍k tī khe-hōaⁿ chi̍t-châng sió-chhiū ê chhiū-kut.
Che tō sī góa só͘ hi-bāng ê. Hō͘ Friday hām tōa-hù kè-sio̍k chò in ê tāi-chì, góa chhōa kî-thaⁿ ê lâng, thau-thau-á kòe sió-khe, tī in bōe chù-ì chìn-chêng kong hiòng lâu tī hia hit nn̄g-lâng -- kî-tiong chi̍t-ê tó tī hōaⁿ-téng, lēng-ê tī chûn-téng. Hōaⁿ-téng hit-ê pòaⁿ khùn pòaⁿ chhéⁿ, tú-tú boeh khí-sin. Kiâⁿ siōng thâu-chêng ê chûn-tiúⁿ chi̍t-ē tō chhiong kàu i bīn-chêng, kā i kòng-tó tī thô͘-kha. Chûn-tiúⁿ koh hiòng chûn-téng hit-lâng hoah, kiò i tâu-hâng, nā-bô tō bô-miā.
Ko͘ chi̍t-lâng khòaⁿ tio̍h gō͘-lâng chông hiòng i, tông-phōaⁿ koh hông kòng-tó, m̄-bián koh kóng siáⁿ, i tiāⁿ-tio̍h tâu-hâng. Jî-chhiáⁿ, i sī pī-pek chham-ka hoán-poān saⁿ-lâng kî-tiong ê chi̍t-ê, só͘-tì chi̍t-ē tō goān-ì tâu-hâng, āu-lâi iū-koh chin-sim chham-ka goán chit-pêng.
Kāng chit-sî, Friday hām tōa-hù kā tùi-hù kî-thaⁿ lâng ê jīm-bū chip-hêng kah chin hó-sè. In ná hoah-siaⁿ koh ná ìn-siaⁿ, ín in chi̍t-soaⁿ kòe chi̍t-soaⁿ, chi̍t-ê chhiū-nâ kàu pa̍t-ê chhiū-nâ, m̄-nā kā in hut kah thiám oaiⁿ-oaiⁿ, koh hō͘ in lâu tī hia, khak-tēng thiⁿ-àm chìn-chêng in chhōe bô lō͘ thang tńg-khì sió-chûn. Khak-si̍t, tán tńg-lâi kàu goán chia ê sî, in ka-tī mā thiám kah.
Taⁿ goán bô siáⁿ hó chò, kan-ta tī o͘-àm tiong kàm-sī in, chún-pī sûi-sî chìn-kong, kā in phah-pāi. Friday tńg-lâi kúi tiám-cheng liáu-āu, hiah-ê lâng chiah tńg-lâi kàu sió-chûn chia. Goán hn̄g-hn̄g tō thiaⁿ tio̍h kiâⁿ siōng thâu-chêng ê lâng, kiò āu-piah ê lâng tòe óa, mā thiaⁿ tio̍h āu-bīn ê lâng ìn, kóng in kha chin sng koh chin thiám, bô hoat-tō͘ jiok oá lah. Che tùi goán lâi-kóng sī hó siau-sit.
Chòe-āu, in chóng-sǹg lâi kàu sió-chûn chia. Hit-sî hái-lâu í-keng thè, sió-chûn chē-té tī sió-khe, chûn-lāi hit nn̄g-lâng bô tī hia, khòaⁿ tio̍h che, hit-sî in ê tio̍h-kiaⁿ piáu-chêng, si̍t-chāi bô hoat-tō͘ piáu-ta̍t. Goán thiaⁿ tio̍h in hō͘-siong hoah-hiu, siaⁿ-tiāu chhi-chhám, kóng in lâi-kàu chi̍t-ê hoān-tio̍h-kúi ê tó, nā m̄-sī tó-siōng ū lâng, tō sī ū iau-koài. Nā ū-lâng, in tō ē hông thâi kah chi̍t-ê bô chhun. Nā ū iau-koài, mā ē hō͘ iau-koài lia̍h cháu, chia̍h--khì.
In iū-koh teh hoah-hiu, kiò hit nn̄g-ê tông-phōaⁿ ê miâ, chi̍t-kái koh chi̍t-kái, m̄-koh bô lâng ìn. Kòe chi̍t-khùn, tī bî-jio̍k kng-sòaⁿ ē-bīn, goán khòaⁿ tio̍h in sì-kè chông, chhiú hàiⁿ lâi hàiⁿ khì, chi̍t-hù choa̍t-bōng ê khoán-sè, ū-sî in iū cháu khì chē-lo̍h tī chûn-lāi hioh-khùn. Jiân-āu iū-koh chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ lâi, koh kiâⁿ lâi kiâⁿ khì, jiân-āu iū-koh chò kāng-khoán ê tāi-chì.
Góa ê ē-kha lâng goân-pún hi-bāng góa chún in tī o͘-àm tiong chek-khek hiòng in kong-kek. M̄-koh, góa siūⁿ chhōe koh-khah iú-lī ê sî-ki chiah chìn-kong, lâu hō͘ in chi̍t-tiâu oa̍h-lō͘, chīn-liōng kiám thâi lâng. Iû-kî, góa bô-ài mō͘-hiám goán ê lâng ê sèⁿ-miā, in-ūi góa chai tùi-hong ê bú-khì chiâu-chn̂g.
Góa koat-tēng koh tán, khòaⁿ in kám bē hun-sòaⁿ. Só͘-tì, ūi-tio̍h cheng-ka pá-ak, góa bēng-lēng chhiú-ē hiòng chêng sóa khah óa, koh kiò Friday hām chûn-tiúⁿ kō͘ kha kap chhiú tah óa thô͘ pê, mài hō͘ in hoat-hiān, tī bōe khui-chhèng chìn-chêng chīn-liōng pê óa in.

18.3 烏暗中監視 in, 準備進攻
一下看著 in 行向海邊去, 我 tō 想講 in 已經放棄 koh 揣 ah. 我一下 kā 船長講出我 ê 想法, 伊 tō 煩惱 kah 袂講得. M̄-koh, 我隨 koh 想著一个 kā in 引轉來 ê 計策, he 後來 mā 有達到我 ê 目的. 我命令 Friday 和大副過小溪, 向西到生番上岸, Friday "得救" 彼个所在去, 等 in 行到約半 mai [800 米] 遠彼个崙仔頂 ê 時, 我交代 in 開始大聲喝咻, lú 大聲 lú 好, 一直喝到 hiah-ê 水手聽著為止. 我 koh 交代 in, 若聽著水手應聲了後, in 著 kā 應一下, m̄-koh 毋好予 in 看著, 踅彎路行, 總是應 in ê 叫聲, 盡量 kā in 引入島內, 引往樹林. 然後, 照我指定 ê 路線踅到我 chia 來.
In 拄上船, 彼時 Friday 和大副 tō 開始大聲 teh 咻. In 隨聽著, tō 應聲, 沿海岸走向西, 向 in 聽著 ê 聲, 然後予小溪閘著, 彼時溪水真滿, in 袂得過, tō 叫小船划過來, 渡 in 過溪. Che, 確實, lóng tī 我 ê 預料內面. 等 in 過溪了後, 我發現 he 小船已經入小溪一大節, 到內陸 ê 一个小港灣. In 叫三人其中一人落船, 綴 in 行, 留兩人 tī 船內, kā 船縛 tī 溪岸一叢小樹 ê 樹骨.
Che tō 是我所希望 ê. 予 Friday 和大副繼續做 in ê 代誌, 我𤆬其他 ê 人, 偷偷仔過小溪, tī in 未注意進前攻向留 tī hia hit 兩人 -- 其中一个倒 tī 岸頂, 另个 tī 船頂. 岸頂彼个半睏半醒, 拄拄欲起身. 行上頭前 ê 船長一下 tō 衝到伊面前, kā 伊摃倒 tī 塗跤. 船長 koh 向船頂 hit 人喝, 叫伊投降, 若無 tō 無命.
孤一人看著五人傱向伊, 同伴 koh hông 摃倒, 毋免 koh 講啥, 伊定著投降. 而且, 伊是被迫參加反叛三人其中 ê 一个, 所致一下 tō 願意投降, 後來又閣真心參加阮這爿.
仝這時, Friday 和大副 kā 對付其他人 ê 任務執行 kah 真好勢. In ná 喝聲 koh ná 應聲, 引 in 一山過一山, 一个樹林到別个樹林, 毋但 kā in hut kah 忝 oaiⁿ-oaiⁿ, koh 予 in 留 tī hia, 確定天暗進前 in 揣無路 thang 轉去小船. 確實, 等轉來到阮 chia ê 時, in 家己 mā 忝 kah.
今阮無啥好做, 干焦 tī 烏暗中監視 in, 準備隨時進攻, kā in 拍敗. Friday 轉來幾點鐘了後, hiah-ê 人才轉來到小船 chia. 阮遠遠 tō 聽著行上頭前 ê 人, 叫後壁 ê 人綴倚, mā 聽著後面 ê 人應, 講 in 跤真酸 koh 真忝, 無法度逐倚 lah. Che 對阮來講是好消息.
最後, in 總算來到小船 chia. 彼時海流已經退, 小船坐底 tī 小溪, 船內 hit 兩人無 tī hia, 看著 che, 彼時 in ê 著驚表情, 實在無法度表達. 阮聽著 in 互相喝咻, 聲調悽慘, 講 in 來到一个犯著鬼 ê 島, 若毋是島上有人, tō 是有妖怪. 若有人, in tō 會 hông 刣 kah 一个無賰. 若有妖怪, mā 會予妖怪掠走, 食去.
In 又閣 teh 喝咻, 叫 hit 兩个同伴 ê 名, 一改 koh 一改, m̄-koh 無人應. 過一睏, tī 微弱光線下面, 阮看著 in 四界傱, 手幌來幌去, chi̍t-hù 絕望 ê 款勢, 有時 in 又走去坐落 tī 船內歇睏. 然後又閣上岸來, koh 行來行去, 然後又閣做仝款 ê 代誌.
我 ê 下跤人原本希望我准 in tī 烏暗中即刻向 in 攻擊. M̄-koh, 我想揣閣較有利 ê 時機才進攻, 留予 in 一條活路, 盡量減刣人. 尤其, 我無愛冒險阮 ê 人 ê 性命, 因為我知對方 ê 武器 chiâu-chn̂g.
我決定 koh 等, 看 in 敢袂分散. 所致, 為著增加把握, 我命令手下向前徙較倚, koh 叫 Friday 和船長 kō͘ 跤 kap 手貼倚塗爬, 莫予 in 發現, tī 未開銃進前盡量爬倚 in.

As soon as I perceived them go towards the shore, I imagined it to be as it really was that they had given over their search, and were going back again; and the captain, as soon as I told him my thoughts, was ready to sink at the apprehensions of it; but I presently thought of a stratagem to fetch them back again, and which answered my end to a tittle. I ordered Friday and the captain’s mate to go over the little creek westward, towards the place where the savages came on shore, when Friday was rescued, and so soon as they came to a little rising round, at about half a mile distant, I bid them halloo out, as loud as they could, and wait till they found the seamen heard them; that as soon as ever they heard the seamen answer them, they should return it again; and then, keeping out of sight, take a round, always answering when the others hallooed, to draw them as far into the island and among the woods as possible, and then wheel about again to me by such ways as I directed them.
They were just going into the boat when Friday and the mate hallooed; and they presently heard them, and answering, ran along the shore westward, towards the voice they heard, when they were stopped by the creek, where the water being up, they could not get over, and called for the boat to come up and set them over; as, indeed, I expected. When they had set themselves over, I observed that the boat being gone a good way into the creek, and, as it were, in a harbour within the land, they took one of the three men out of her, to go along with them, and left only two in the boat, having fastened her to the stump of a little tree on the shore. /
This was what I wished for; and immediately leaving Friday and the captain’s mate to their business, I took the rest with me; and, crossing the creek out of their sight, we surprised the two men before they were aware—one of them lying on the shore, and the other being in the boat. The fellow on shore was between sleeping and waking, and going to start up; the captain, who was foremost, ran in upon him, and knocked him down; and then called out to him in the boat to yield, or he was a dead man./
They needed very few arguments to persuade a single man to yield, when he saw five men upon him and his comrade knocked down: besides, this was, it seems, one of the three who were not so hearty in the mutiny as the rest of the crew, and therefore was easily persuaded not only to yield, but afterwards to join very sincerely with us. /
In the meantime, Friday and the captain’s mate so well managed their business with the rest that they drew them, by hallooing and answering, from one hill to another, and from one wood to another, till they not only heartily tired them, but left them where they were, very sure they could not reach back to the boat before it was dark; and, indeed, they were heartily tired themselves also, by the time they came back to us.
We had nothing now to do but to watch for them in the dark, and to fall upon them, so as to make sure work with them. It was several hours after Friday came back to me before they came back to their boat; and we could hear the foremost of them, long before they came quite up, calling to those behind to come along; and could also hear them answer, and complain how lame and tired they were, and not able to come any faster: which was very welcome news to us. /
At length they came up to the boat: but it is impossible to express their confusion when they found the boat fast aground in the creek, the tide ebbed out, and their two men gone. We could hear them call one to another in a most lamentable manner, telling one another they were got into an enchanted island; that either there were inhabitants in it, and they should all be murdered, or else there were devils and spirits in it, and they should be all carried away and devoured. /
They hallooed again, and called their two comrades by their names a great many times; but no answer. After some time we could see them, by the little light there was, run about, wringing their hands like men in despair, and sometimes they would go and sit down in the boat to rest themselves: then come ashore again, and walk about again, and so the same thing over again. /
My men would fain have had me give them leave to fall upon them at once in the dark; but I was willing to take them at some advantage, so as to spare them, and kill as few of them as I could; and especially I was unwilling to hazard the killing of any of our men, knowing the others were very well armed. /
I resolved to wait, to see if they did not separate; and therefore, to make sure of them, I drew my ambuscade nearer, and ordered Friday and the captain to creep upon their hands and feet, as close to the ground as they could, that they might not be discovered, and get as near them as they could possibly before they offered to fire.
