17.4 Siong-sìn chûn-téng ū góa ê tông-pau
Góa bô hoat-tō͘ piáu-ta̍t hit-sî ê hūn-loān sim-chêng, sui-bóng khòaⁿ tio̍h chi̍t-chiah tōa-chûn, ū lí-iû siong-sìn he chûn-téng ū góa ê tông-pau, chū-jiân mā sī pêng-iú, sim-lāi ū kóng bē-chhut ê hoaⁿ-hí. M̄-koh, góa sim-lāi àm-tiong mā ū hoâi-gî. Góa m̄-chai he hoâi-gî ùi tó-ūi lâi, he hō͘ góa pó-chhî kéng-kài. Siú-sian, góa siūⁿ, Eng-kok chûn lâi chia sī siáⁿ sū, in-ūi chit só͘-chāi m̄-sī Eng-kok lâng lâi-óng sè-kài kok-tē ê hâng-tō. Kî-chhù, góa chai pēng bô siáⁿ tōa hong-hō͘ pek-sú in lâi-kàu chia. Ká-sú in chin-chiàⁿ sī Eng-kok lâng, in lâi chia tiāⁿ-tio̍h bô an hó-sim. Siōng-hó góa sī pó-chhî goân-iūⁿ, m̄-thang lak-lo̍h chhat-thau a̍h chōe-hoān ê chhiú-tiong.
Lâng m̄-thang khòaⁿ-khin hûi-hiám ê àm-sī hām thong-ti, ū-sî i jīn-ûi bô khó-lêng ū siáⁿ hûi-hiám, hûi-hiám ê àm-sī hām thong-ti tō kàu-ūi. Góa siong-sìn, tùi chit-chióng tāi-chì sió ū chù-ì ê lâng, chin chió ē hóⁿ-jīn chit-chióng chêng-hêng. Tông-sî, lán mā bē-tàng hoâi-gî, chit-chióng àm-sī hām thong-ti sī lâi-chū khòaⁿ bē-tio̍h ê sè-kài, sī sîn-bêng tiong-kan ê tùi-ōe. Jû-kó chit-chióng àm-sī sī teh kéng-kò lán ū hûi-hiám, sī án-chóaⁿ lán m̄ kā he khòaⁿ-chò sī lâi-chū iú-siān ê sú-chiá (m̄-koán sī chì-chun, a̍h sī hā-chiān, pi-bî, lóng m̄-sī būn-tê), sī ūi-tio̍h lán ê lī-ek?
Bo̍k-chêng ê būn-tê chhiong-hun chèng-bêng góa ê thui-lūn chèng-khak. Nā m̄-sī ū che m̄-chai ùi tó lâi ê sîn-pì kéng-kò, hō͘ góa kín-sīn, góa tō lân-bián hāi liáu-liáu ah, jî-chhiáⁿ pí kòe-khì ê chōng-hóng koh-khah hāi, che lí chek-sî tō ē khòaⁿ tio̍h. M̄-koh, in-ūi in lâi bô-kàu hn̄g, in bô khòaⁿ tio̍h góa í-chêng thêng-khò pâi-á ê hit-ê sió chúi-oan, jî sī kā chûn sái óa hái-than khò-hōaⁿ, lī góa chia tāi-khài pòaⁿ mai [0.8 km], án-ne hō͘ góa chin hoaⁿ-hí. Nā-bô, in tō ē tī góa ê mn̂g-kháu chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ, ē-sái kóng, in tō ē kā góa kóaⁿ chhut siâⁿ-pó, koh hoān-sè chhiúⁿ-cháu góa só͘-ū ê it-chhè.
In chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ liáu, góa chin hoaⁿ-hí, khòaⁿ chhut in kó-jiân lóng sī Eng-kok lâng, siōng-bô tōa pō͘-hūn sī. Kî-tiong ū chi̍t/nn̄g-ê khòaⁿ sī Hô-lân lâng, m̄-koh āu-lâi chèng-bêng m̄-sī. Lóng-chóng 11 lâng, kî-tiong saⁿ-ê bô bú-khì, jî-chhiáⁿ ká-ná siū-pa̍k. Thâu-chêng sì/gō͘-ê thiàu lo̍h-chûn liáu, in kā hit saⁿ-ê ná hu-ló͘ án-ne ah lo̍h-chûn. Saⁿ-lâng kî-tiong chi̍t-ê, góa kám-kak ē-tio̍h, i kō͘ kek-tōng ê chhiú-sè, piáu-sī khún-kiû, thòng-khó͘ hām choa̍t-bōng, sīm-chì chò kah siuⁿ kòe-thâu. Lēng-gōa nn̄g-lâng, góa khòaⁿ tio̍h in ū-sî gia̍h-khí siang-chhiú, hián-sī khak-si̍t cho-sim ê khoán, m̄-koh bô tē-it-ê hiah kek-tōng.
Góa khòaⁿ kah kui-ê gāng-khì, m̄-chai che sī siáⁿ ì-sù. Friday tī piⁿ-á chīn-liōng kō͘ i ē-hiáu ê Eng-gí tùi góa kóng:
"O, chú-lâng! Lí khòaⁿ, Eng-kok lâng mā chia̍h hu-ló͘, hām chheⁿ-hoan kāng-khoán."
"Án-chóaⁿ kóng, Friday?" góa kóng, "lí siūⁿ-kóng in boeh chia̍h in sioh?"
"Sī ah," Friday kóng, "in ē kā in chia̍h-khì."
"Bē, bē lah," góa kóng, "Friday, góa khióng-kiaⁿ in boeh thâi in, khak-si̍t; m̄-koh lí ē-tàng khak-tēng, in bē kā in chia̍h."

17.4 相信船頂有我 ê 同胞
我無法度表達彼時 ê 混亂心情, 雖罔看著一隻大船, 有理由相信 he 船頂有我 ê 同胞, 自然 mā 是朋友, 心內有講袂出 ê 歡喜. M̄-koh, 我心內暗中 mā 有懷疑. 我毋知 he 懷疑 ùi 佗位來, he 予我保持警戒. 首先, 我想, 英國船來 chia 是啥事, 因為這所在毋是英國人來往世界各地 ê 航道. 其次, 我知並無啥大風雨迫使 in 來到 chia. 假使 in 真正是英國人, in 來 chia 定著無安好心. 上好我是保持原樣, 毋通 lak 落賊頭 a̍h 罪犯 ê 手中.
人毋通看輕危險 ê 暗示 hām 通知, 有時伊認為無可能有啥危險, 危險 ê 暗示 hām 通知 tō 到位. 我相信, 對這種代誌小有注意 ê 人, 真少會否認這種情形. 同時, 咱 mā 袂當懷疑, 這種暗示 hām 通知是來自看袂著 ê 世界, 是神明中間 ê 對話. 如果這種暗示是 teh 警告咱有危險, 是按怎咱 m̄ kā he 看做是來自友善 ê 使者 (毋管是至尊, a̍h 是下賤, 卑微, lóng 毋是問題), 是為著咱 ê 利益?
目前 ê 問題充分證明我 ê 推論正確. 若毋是有 che 毋知 ùi 佗來 ê 神祕警告, 予我謹慎, 我 tō 難免害了了 ah, 而且比過去 ê 狀況閣較害, che 你即時 tō 會看著. 我保持這个姿勢無久, tō 看著船倚岸邊, ká-ná teh 揣一條小溪, hó-thang 方便靠岸. M̄-koh, 因為 in 來無夠遠, in 無看著我以前停靠排仔 ê 彼个小水灣, 而是 kā 船駛倚海灘靠岸, 離我 chia 大概半 mai [0.8 km], án-ne 予我真歡喜. 若無, in tō 會 tī 我 ê 門口上岸, 會使講, in tō 會 kā 我趕出城堡, koh 凡勢搶走我所有 ê 一切.
In 上岸了, 我真歡喜, 看出 in 果然 lóng 是英國人, 上無大部份是. 其中有一兩个看是 Hô-lân 人, m̄-koh 後來證明毋是. 攏總 11 人, 其中三个無武器, 而且 ká-ná 受縛. 頭前四五个跳落船了, in kā 彼三个 ná 俘虜 án-ne 押落船. 三人其中一个, 我感覺會著, 伊 kō͘ 激動 ê 手勢, 表示懇求, 痛苦 hām 絕望, 甚至做 kah siuⁿ 過頭. 另外兩人, 我看著 in 有時攑起雙手, 顯示確實慒心 ê 款, m̄-koh 無第一个 hiah 激動.
我看 kah 規个愣去, 毋知這是啥意思. Friday tī 邊仔盡量 kō͘ 伊會曉 ê 英語對我講:
"O, 主人! 你看, 英國人 mā 食俘虜, 和生番仝款."
"按怎講, Friday?" 我講, "你想講 in 欲食 in sioh?"
"是 ah," Friday 講, "in 會 kā in 食去."
"袂, 袂 lah," 我講, "Friday, 我恐驚 in 欲刣 in, 確實; 毋過你會當確定, in 袂 kā in 食."

I cannot express the confusion I was in, though the joy of seeing a ship, and one that I had reason to believe was manned by my own countrymen, and consequently friends, was such as I cannot describe; but yet I had some secret doubts hung about me—I cannot tell from whence they came—bidding me keep upon my guard. In the first place, it occurred to me to consider what business an English ship could have in that part of the world, since it was not the way to or from any part of the world where the English had any traffic; and I knew there had been no storms to drive them in there in distress; and that if they were really English it was most probable that they were here upon no good design; and that I had better continue as I was than fall into the hands of thieves and murderers.
Let no man despise the secret hints and notices of danger which sometimes are given him when he may think there is no possibility of its being real. That such hints and notices are given us I believe few that have made any observation of things can deny; that they are certain discoveries of an invisible world, and a converse of spirits, we cannot doubt; and if the tendency of them seems to be to warn us of danger, why should we not suppose they are from some friendly agent (whether supreme, or inferior and subordinate, is not the question), and that they are given for our good?
The present question abundantly confirms me in the justice of this reasoning; for had I not been made cautious by this secret admonition, come it from whence it will, I had been done inevitably, and in a far worse condition than before, as you will see presently. I had not kept myself long in this posture till I saw the boat draw near the shore, as if they looked for a creek to thrust in at, for the convenience of landing; however, as they did not come quite far enough, they did not see the little inlet where I formerly landed my rafts, but ran their boat on shore upon the beach, at about half a mile from me, which was very happy for me; for otherwise they would have landed just at my door, as I may say, and would soon have beaten me out of my castle, and perhaps have plundered me of all I had. /
When they were on shore I was fully satisfied they were Englishmen, at least most of them; one or two I thought were Dutch, but it did not prove so; there were in all eleven men, whereof three of them I found were unarmed and, as I thought, bound; and when the first four or five of them were jumped on shore, they took those three out of the boat as prisoners: one of the three I could perceive using the most passionate gestures of entreaty, affliction, and despair, even to a kind of extravagance; the other two, I could perceive, lifted up their hands sometimes, and appeared concerned indeed, but not to such a degree as the first. /
I was perfectly confounded at the sight, and knew not what the meaning of it should be. Friday called out to me in English, as well as he could,
“O master! you see English mans eat prisoner as well as savage mans.”
“Why, Friday,” says I, “do you think they are going to eat them, then?”
“Yes,” says Friday, “they will eat them.”
“No no,” says I, “Friday; I am afraid they will murder them, indeed; but you may be sure they will not eat them.”
