17.3 Góa hō͘ Sepanga lâng kap lāu-hoan khì tāi-lio̍k

Kàu taⁿ, ūi kî-thāi ê lâng-kheh khoán hó kàu-gia̍h ê chia̍h-mi̍h, góa tō hō͘ Sepanga lâng khì tāi-lio̍k, khòaⁿ ē-tàng pang lâu tī hia ê lâng chhòng-siáⁿ. Góa hō͘ i chi̍t-ê giâm-keh ê bēng-lēng, m̄-thang chhōa tńg-lâi jīm-hô m̄-khéng seng tī i hām lāu-hoan bīn-chêng chiù-chōa ê lâng, in tio̍h seng choa̍t-tùi bē siong-hāi a̍h kong-kek tó-siōng chit-ê hó-sim phài lâng khì kái-kiù in ê lâng. In tio̍h chiù-chōa, tú-tio̍h ū-lâng pōe-poān, in tio̍h khiā góa chit-pêng, tio̍h pó-hō͘ góa, bô-lūn kàu tó-ūi, lóng choa̍t-tùi ho̍k-chiông góa ê chí-hui. Chiah-ê tiâu-kiāⁿ  lóng tio̍h siá lo̍h-lâi, chhin-chhiú chhiam-miâ. 

Góa chai in bô pit mā bô chóa, in boeh án-chóaⁿ siá che, chhiam-miâ ah? M̄-koh hit-sî bô lâng mn̄g chit-ê būn-tê. Chiàu chiah-ê chí-sī, Sepanga lâng hām lāu-hoan, its Friday in lāu-pē chhut-hoat khì. In chē ê to̍k-bo̍k-chiu sī tong-chho͘ in chē kòe-lâi ê kî-tiong chi̍t-chiah. Kóng khah pe̍h leh, sī in hō͘ chheⁿ-hoan lia̍h chò hu-ló͘ boeh thâi khì chia̍h, chài in lâi ê chûn kî-tiong chi̍t-chiah. Góa kau hō͘ in múi-lâng chi̍t-ki tn̂g-chhèng, hù ū tiám-hóe khì, koh ū peh-hoat ê hóe-io̍h hām chhèng-chí, hoan-hù in nn̄g-hāng lóng tio̍h khiām-khiām-á iōng, tî-hui kín-kip ê sî chiah sú-iōng.

Che sī chi̍t-hāng jû-khoài ê khang-khòe, mā sī 27 nî lâi góa ūi-tio̍h tit-kiù só͘ chhái-chhú ê tē-it pō͘. Góa hō͘ in chē-chē pháng hām pô-tô koaⁿ, ū-kàu in chia̍h chē-chē kang, mā ū-kàu só͘-ū ê Sepanga lâng chia̍h tāi-khài 8-kang. Góa sàng in chhut-phâng, iok-sok tńg-lâi ê sî chûn-téng kòa ê sìn-hō, hó-thang tī chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ chêng, hn̄g-hn̄g góa tō jīn chhut-lâi. In thàn sūn-hong tī chi̍t-ê goe̍h-îⁿ ê àm-mê chhut-hoat. Chiàu góa ê thui-sǹg, he sī tī 10-goe̍h. M̄-koh, chún-khak ê ji̍t-chí, chū-chiông góa tī ji̍t-kì hut loān khì, í-keng sǹg bē chheng-chhó ah. Sīm-chì nî-tō͘ ê kì-chài, góa mā bô kài khak-tēng, ka-chài āu-lâi góa kiám-cha góa ê kì-lo̍k, hoat-hiān nî-tō͘ kì liáu ū chún-khak.

Góa tán in put-chí 8-kang, hut-jiân hoat-seng chi̍t-kiāⁿ kî-koài ê tāi-chì, he sī le̍k-sú-siōng m̄-bat thiaⁿ-kòe ê. Chi̍t chá-khí, góa tī ka-tī chhù-lāi khùn kah tng ji̍p-bîn, hut-jiân Friday cháu ji̍p-lâi, ná cháu ná tōa-siaⁿ hoah: 

"Chú-lâng, chú-lâng, in lâi ah, in lâi ah!" 

Góa thiàu khí-lâi, bô kò͘ hûi-hiám tō chhut-mn̂g, ná sa saⁿ chhēng hó, ná cháu kòe sió chhiū-nâ, he, sūn-sòa kóng chi̍t-ē, taⁿ í-keng sī cha̍t koh ba̍t ê chhiū-nâ. Gia̍h-ba̍k khòaⁿ tōa-hái, hō͘ góa tio̍h-kiaⁿ ê sī, tī tāi-khài 1 league [4.8 km] hn̄g ê só͘-chāi, ū chi̍t-chiah sió-chûn, kòa iûⁿ-keng-phâng, tng-teh sái hiòng hái-hōaⁿ lâi, hong-sè mā chi̍t-lō͘ kā in sak óa-lâi. Chit-sî, góa mā chù-ì tio̍h, in m̄-sī hit-pêng hōaⁿ lâi ê, sī ùi tó ê siōng lâm-pêng lâi ê.

Chū án-ne, góa kiò Friday kòe-lâi, hoan-hù i tòe óa góa, in-ūi chiah-ê m̄-sī lán teh tán ê lâng, iáu m̄-chai in sī pêng-iú a̍h te̍k-jîn. Koh-lâi, góa tō ji̍p-khì the̍h tiàu-kiàⁿ, boeh kā in khòaⁿ chheng-chhó. Góa poaⁿ thui chhut-lâi, peh kàu soaⁿ-téng. Khí giâu-gî boeh khòaⁿ chheng-chhó ê sî, góa chóng-sī án-ne chò, bián-tit pī hoat-hiān. Chi̍t-ē ta̍h-kha kàu soaⁿ-téng, góa tō chheng-chhó khòaⁿ tio̍h chi̍t-chiah tōa-chûn pha-tiāⁿ tī lī góa 2.5 league [12 km] ê hái-siōng, tī tang-lâm phian lâm hit-hiòng, lī hái-hoāⁿ bô-kàu 1.5 league [7.2 km]. Góa chi̍t-ba̍k tō khòaⁿ chhut he sī Eng-kok chûn, á hit-chiah sió-chûn khòaⁿ sī Eng-kok tn̂g-théng.

17.3 我予 Sepanga 人 kap 老番去大陸

到今, 為期待 ê 人客款好夠額 ê chia̍h-mi̍h, 我 tō 予 Sepanga 人去大陸, 看會當幫留 tī hia ê 人創啥. 我予伊一个嚴格 ê 命令, m̄-thang 𤆬轉來任何毋肯先 tī 伊和老番面前咒誓 ê 人, in 著先絕對袂傷害 a̍h 攻擊島上這个好心派人去解救 in ê 人. In 著咒誓, 拄著有人背叛, in 著徛我這爿, 著保護我, 無論到佗位, lóng 絕對服從我 ê 指揮. Chiah-ê 條件  lóng 著寫落來, 親手簽名. 

我知 in 無筆 mā 無紙, in 欲按怎寫這, 簽名 ah? M̄-koh 彼時無人問這个問題. 照 chiah-ê 指示, Sepanga 人和老番, its Friday in 老爸出發去. In 坐 ê 獨木舟是當初 in 坐過來 ê 其中一隻. 講較白 leh, 是 in 予生番掠做俘虜欲刣去食, 載 in 來 ê 船其中一隻. 我交予 in 每人一支長銃, 附有點火器, koh 有八發 ê 火藥和銃子, 吩咐 in 兩項 lóng 著儉儉仔用, 除非緊急 ê 時才使用.

這是一項愉快 ê 工課, mā 是 27 年來我為著得救所採取 ê 第一步. 我予 in 濟濟 pháng 和 pô-tô 乾, 有夠 in 食濟濟工, mā 有夠所有 ê Sepanga 人食大概 8 工. 我送 in 出帆, 約束轉來 ê 時船頂掛 ê 信號, hó-thang tī 上岸前, 遠遠我 tō 認出來. In 趁順風 tī 一个月圓 ê 暗暝出發. 照我 ê 推算, 彼是 tī 10 月. M̄-koh, 準確 ê 日子, 自從我 tī 日記 hut 亂去, 已經算袂清楚 ah. 甚至年度 ê 記載, 我 mā 無 kài 確定, 佳哉後來我檢查我 ê 記錄, 發現年度記了有準確.

我等 in 不止 8 工, 忽然發生一件奇怪 ê 代誌, 彼是歷史上毋捌聽過 ê. 一早起, 我 tī 家己厝內睏 kah tng 入眠, 忽然 Friday 走入來, ná 走 ná 大聲喝: 

"主人, 主人, in 來 ah, in 來 ah!" 

我跳起來, 無顧危險 tō 出門, ná 捎衫穿好, ná 走過小樹林, he, 順紲講一下, 今已經是 cha̍t koh 密 ê 樹林. 我講無顧危險, 意思是我無扎武器 tō 出門, 這毋是我 ê 習慣. 攑目看大海, 予我著驚 ê 是, tī 大概 1 league [4.8 km] 遠 ê 所在, 有一隻小船, 掛羊肩帆, tng-teh 駛向海岸來, 風勢 mā 一路 kā in 捒倚來. 這時, 我 mā 注意著, in 毋是彼爿岸來 ê, 是 ùi 島 ê 上南爿來 ê.

自 án-ne, 我叫 Friday 過來, 吩咐伊綴倚我, 因為 chiah-ê 毋是咱 teh 等 ê 人, 猶毋知 in 是朋友 a̍h 敵人. 閣來, 我 tō 入去提召鏡, 欲 kā in 看清楚. 我搬梯出來, peh 到山頂. 起憢疑欲看清楚 ê 時, 我總是 án-ne 做, 免得被發現. 一下踏跤到山頂, 我 tō 清楚看著一隻大船拋碇 tī 離我 2.5 league [12 km] ê 海上, tī 東南偏南彼向, 離海岸無到 1.5 league [7.2 km]. 我一目 tō 看出彼是英國船, á 彼隻小船看是英國長艇.

And now, having a full supply of food for all the guests I expected, I gave the Spaniard leave to go over to the main, to see what he could do with those he had left behind him there. I gave him a strict charge not to bring any man who would not first swear in the presence of himself and the old savage that he would in no way injure, fight with, or attack the person he should find in the island, who was so kind as to send for them in order to their deliverance; but that they would stand by him and defend him against all such attempts, and wherever they went would be entirely under and subjected to his command; and that this should be put in writing, and signed in their hands. /

How they were to have done this, when I knew they had neither pen nor ink, was a question which we never asked. Under these instructions, the Spaniard and the old savage, the father of Friday, went away in one of the canoes which they might be said to have come in, or rather were brought in, when they came as prisoners to be devoured by the savages. I gave each of them a musket, with a firelock on it, and about eight charges of powder and ball, charging them to be very good husbands of both, and not to use either of them but upon urgent occasions.

This was a cheerful work, being the first measures used by me in view of my deliverance for now twenty-seven years and some days. I gave them provisions of bread and of dried grapes, sufficient for themselves for many days, and sufficient for all the Spaniards—for about eight days’ time; and wishing them a good voyage, I saw them go, agreeing with them about a signal they should hang out at their return, by which I should know them again when they came back, at a distance, before they came on shore. They went away with a fair gale on the day that the moon was at full, by my account in the month of October; but as for an exact reckoning of days, after I had once lost it I could never recover it again; nor had I kept even the number of years so punctually as to be sure I was right; though, as it proved when I afterwards examined my account, I found I had kept a true reckoning of years.

It was no less than eight days I had waited for them, when a strange and unforeseen accident intervened, of which the like has not, perhaps, been heard of in history. I was fast asleep in my hutch one morning, when my man Friday came running in to me, and called aloud, 

“Master, master, they are come, they are come!” 

I jumped up, and regardless of danger I went, as soon as I could get my clothes on, through my little grove, which, by the way, was by this time grown to be a very thick wood; I say, regardless of danger I went without my arms, which was not my custom to do; but I was surprised when, turning my eyes to the sea, I presently saw a boat at about a league and a half distance, standing in for the shore, with a shoulder-of-mutton sail, as they call it, and the wind blowing pretty fair to bring them in: also I observed, presently, that they did not come from that side which the shore lay on, but from the southernmost end of the island. /

Upon this I called Friday in, and bade him lie close, for these were not the people we looked for, and that we might not know yet whether they were friends or enemies. In the next place I went in to fetch my perspective glass to see what I could make of them; and having taken the ladder out, I climbed up to the top of the hill, as I used to do when I was apprehensive of anything, and to take my view the plainer without being discovered. I had scarce set my foot upon the hill when my eye plainly discovered a ship lying at anchor, at about two leagues and a half distance from me, SSE., but not above a league and a half from the shore. By my observation it appeared plainly to be an English ship, and the boat appeared to be an English long-boat.
