Góa koh kā i kóng, góa nā pang-chō͘ in thoat-hiám, soah piàn-chò in ê kang-kū, hō͘ in lia̍h chò hu-ló͘, sàng kàu Sin Sepanga, Eng-kok lâng kàu hia, tiāⁿ-tio̍h siū chong-kàu pek-hāi, m̄-koán i khì hia sī put-tek-í a̍h siáⁿ ì-gōa goân-in. Góa lêng-khó kā sèⁿ-miā kau hō͘ chheⁿ-hoan, hō͘ in oa̍h-oa̍h chia̍h--khì, mā bô-ài lûn-lo̍h Sepanga kàu-sū ê bô-chêng mô͘-jiáu, sàng ji̍p chong-kàu hoat-têng. I kā góa ìn, hui-siông sêng-khún koh thán-pe̍h, in ê chōng-hóng hiah chhi-chhám, che in chin ū kám-siū, só͘-í i siong-sìn, tùi ē-tàng pang in tit-kiù ê lâng, in bô khó-lêng ū jīm-hô put-gī ê siūⁿ-hoat. Chí-iàu góa goān-ì, i ē-sái hām hit-ê lāu-lâng khì chhōe in, hām in tâm chit-kiāⁿ sū, jiân-āu chah tńg-lâi in ê tap-ho̍k. Jiân-āu, i kā góa kóng, i boeh ka-tī seng tùi góa chiù-chōa, bô góa ê bēng-lēng, i chit sì-lâng bē lī-khui góa; jû-kó in tông-pau ū tām-po̍h put-gī ê hêng-ûi, i ē khiā góa chit-pêng, chiàn kàu chòe-āu chi̍t-tih hoeh. I kā góa kóng, in lóng sī bûn-bêng, chiàⁿ-ti̍t ê lâng, tng-teh cho-siū siūⁿ bē-kàu ê khùn-lân, bô bú-khì, bô saⁿ-khò͘, bô niû-si̍t, miā-ūn chiáng-ak tī chheⁿ-hoan ê chhiú-tiong, oân-choân bô tńg-khì kò͘-hiong ê hi-bāng. Só͘-tì, i chin khak-tēng, góa nā khéng kiù in thoat-lī khó͘-lān, in tiāⁿ-tio̍h ē khéng kap góa tâng seⁿ-sí.

17. 反叛者來訪

17.1 驚生番反攻 ê 擔心漸漸消失

不而過, 過一站時間, 無 koh 看著生番 ê 獨木舟出現, 驚 in 來反攻 ê 擔心 mā 漸漸消失. 我 koh 開始考慮過去對航行去大陸 ê 想法. Friday ê 老爸 mā kā 我保證, 我若欲去, 看 tī 伊 ê 面子, in ê 部落會好好款待我. M̄-koh, 等我 kap Sepanga 人深入交談了後, 我 ê 想法小可勼倒轉. 因為伊 kā 我講, 目前 in hia 猶有 16 个 Sepanga 人 hām Portugal 人. 因為拄著船難, 逃命到 hia 了後, 雖罔 kap 生番交陪 kah 袂䆀, m̄-koh 真欠生活必需品, 日子確實過 kah 真艱苦. 

我詳細問 in ê 航行, 才知影 in he 是一隻 Sepanga 船, ùi Rio de la Plata 出發, 欲去 Havanna, 去 hia 卸貨, 主要是獸皮 hām 銀, koh 看 tī hia 有啥 Europa 貨 thang 載轉去. In 船頂有五个 Portugal 水手, 是 in ùi  另外一隻出事 ê 船救過來 ê. 後來, in 家己 ê 船 mā 出事, 淹死五个 Sepanga 船員, 其他 ê 人千辛萬苦逃命到食人族 ê 海岸, 險仔枵死; 上岸了又時時擔心予生番食去. 伊 kā 我講, in 有一寡武器, m̄-koh 完全無路用, 因為無火藥 mā 無銃子. 原來 in 所有 ê 火藥 lóng 予海水浸澹; 一屑仔無澹 ê, mā 已經 tī 上岸了, 拍獵揣 chia̍h-mi̍h 用了 ah. 

我問伊, 在伊看, hiah-ê 人後來會按怎, in 有計畫欲逃走無? 伊講, 這 in 有濟濟參詳, m̄-koh 無船, 無造船家私, 連糧食 to 無, 參詳 ê 結果總是目屎 kap 絕望. 我 koh 問伊, 設使我提議 in 逃走, 在伊看, in 敢會接受? A̍h 是講, 假使 in lóng 來 chia, án-ne 做會到無? 我坦白 kā 伊講, 我上驚 ê 是, 一旦我 kā 性命交 tī in ê 手, in 會反背我, 利用我. 因為感恩毋是人性本有 ê 美德, 人往往 mā 毋是 kō͘ 所接著 ê 恩惠來行踏, khah 濟是根據 in 期待 ê 利益 teh 做交換.

我 koh kā 伊講, 我若幫助 in 脫險, 煞變做 in ê 工具, 予 in 掠做俘虜, 送到新 Sepanga, 英國人到 hia, 定著受宗教迫害, 毋管伊去 hia 是不得已 a̍h 啥意外原因. 我寧可 kā 性命交予生番, 予 in 活活食去, mā 無愛淪落 Sepanga 教士 ê 無情魔爪, 送入宗教法庭. 我 koh 講, 若毋是 án-ne, 假使 in lóng tī chia, 咱 tō 有濟濟跤手, 造一隻大船, 載咱到南爿 ê Brazil, a̍h 北爿 ê 島嶼 a̍h Sepanga 海岸. M̄-koh, 我若 kā 武器交 tī in 手中, 如果 in ê 報答是 kō͘ 武力掠我去 Sepanga 人 hia, 好心無好報, án-ne 我 ê 狀況敢毋是比早前閣較慘 ah?

伊 kā 我應, 非常誠懇 koh 坦白, in ê 狀況 hiah 悽慘, 這 in 真有感受, 所以伊相信, 對會當幫 in 得救 ê 人, in 無可能有任何不義 ê 想法. 只要我願意, 伊會使和彼个老人去揣 in, 和 in 談這件事, 然後扎轉來 in ê 答復. 伊會 kap in 講條件, 叫 in 慎重咒誓, 接受我做 in ê 司令 kap 船長, 絕對服從我 ê 指揮. In 著 kō͘ 聖經 kap 福音咒誓, 向我效忠, 到我欲去 ê Kitok 教國家, 袂去別位, 完全 koh 絕對照我 ê 命令, 一直到安全登陸 tī 我意向 ê 國家. 伊會為這, 叫 in 親手簽字, koh 扎轉來彼份合約.

然後, 伊 kā 我講, 伊欲家己先對我咒誓, 無我 ê 命令, 伊這世人袂離開我; 如果 in 同胞有淡薄不義 ê 行為, 伊會徛我這爿, 戰到最後一滴血. 伊 kā 我講, in lóng 是文明, 正直 ê 人, tng-teh 遭受想袂到 ê 困難, 無武器, 無衫褲, 無糧食, 命運掌握 tī 生番 ê 手中, 完全無轉去故鄉 ê 希望. 所致, 伊真確定, 我若肯救 in 脫離苦難, in 定著會肯 kap 我同生死.

CHAPTER XVII.

VISIT OF MUTINEERS

17.1

In a little time, however, no more canoes appearing, the fear of their coming wore off; and I began to take my former thoughts of a voyage to the main into consideration; being likewise assured by Friday’s father that I might depend upon good usage from their nation, on his account, if I would go. But my thoughts were a little suspended when I had a serious discourse with the Spaniard, and when I understood that there were sixteen more of his countrymen and Portuguese, who having been cast away and made their escape to that side, lived there at peace, indeed, with the savages, but were very sore put to it for necessaries, and, indeed, for life. /

I asked him all the particulars of their voyage, and found they were a Spanish ship, bound from the Rio de la Plata to the Havanna, being directed to leave their loading there, which was chiefly hides and silver, and to bring back what European goods they could meet with there; that they had five Portuguese seamen on board, whom they took out of another wreck; that five of their own men were drowned when first the ship was lost, and that these escaped through infinite dangers and hazards, and arrived, almost starved, on the cannibal coast, where they expected to have been devoured every moment. He told me they had some arms with them, but they were perfectly useless, for that they had neither powder nor ball, the washing of the sea having spoiled all their powder but a little, which they used at their first landing to provide themselves with some food.

I asked him what he thought would become of them there, and if they had formed any design of making their escape. He said they had many consultations about it; but that having neither vessel nor tools to build one, nor provisions of any kind, their councils always ended in tears and despair. I asked him how he thought they would receive a proposal from me, which might tend towards an escape; and whether, if they were all here, it might not be done. I told him with freedom, I feared mostly their treachery and ill-usage of me, if I put my life in their hands; for that gratitude was no inherent virtue in the nature of man, nor did men always square their dealings by the obligations they had received so much as they did by the advantages they expected. /

I told him it would be very hard that I should be made the instrument of their deliverance, and that they should afterwards make me their prisoner in New Spain, where an Englishman was certain to be made a sacrifice, what necessity or what accident soever brought him thither; and that I had rather be delivered up to the savages, and be devoured alive, than fall into the merciless claws of the priests, and be carried into the Inquisition. I added that, otherwise, I was persuaded, if they were all here, we might, with so many hands, build a barque large enough to carry us all away, either to the Brazils southward, or to the islands or Spanish coast northward; but that if, in requital, they should, when I had put weapons into their hands, carry me by force among their own people, I might be ill-used for my kindness to them, and make my case worse than it was before.

He answered, with a great deal of candour and ingenuousness, that their condition was so miserable, and that they were so sensible of it, that he believed they would abhor the thought of using any man unkindly that should contribute to their deliverance; and that, if I pleased, he would go to them with the old man, and discourse with them about it, and return again and bring me their answer; that he would make conditions with them upon their solemn oath, that they should be absolutely under my direction as their commander and captain; and they should swear upon the holy sacraments and gospel to be true to me, and go to such Christian country as I should agree to, and no other; and to be directed wholly and absolutely by my orders till they were landed safely in such country as I intended, and that he would bring a contract from them, under their hands, for that purpose. /

Then he told me he would first swear to me himself that he would never stir from me as long as he lived till I gave him orders; and that he would take my side to the last drop of his blood, if there should happen the least breach of faith among his countrymen. He told me they were all of them very civil, honest men, and they were under the greatest distress imaginable, having neither weapons nor clothes, nor any food, but at the mercy and discretion of the savages; out of all hopes of ever returning to their own country; and that he was sure, if I would undertake their relief, they would live and die by me.
