16.8 Góa ê tó taⁿ ū ki-bîn ah

Góa ê tó taⁿ ū ki-bîn ah, góa kám-kak in sī góa ê peh-sèⁿ. Góa chhiâng-chāi hoaⁿ-hí án-ne siūⁿ, kám-kak ka-tī sī chi̍t-ê kok-ông. Siú-sian, kui-ê tó sī góa ê châi-sán, só͘-í, tùi góa ê léng-thó͘ góa ū choa̍t-tùi ê khoân-lī. Kî-chhù, góa ê peh-sèⁿ oân-choân ho̍k-chiông -- góa sī choa̍t-tùi ê thóng-tī-chiá, mā sī li̍p-hoat-chiá. In ê miā sī góa só͘ kiù, pit-iàu ê sî, in goān-ì ūi góa hiàn-chhut ka-tī ê sèⁿ-miā. Ta̍t-tit chù-ì ê sī, sui-bóng góa kan-ta ū saⁿ-ê peh-sèⁿ, in sio̍k saⁿ-chióng bô-kāng ê chong-kàu: Friday sī Sin-kàu-tô͘, in lāu-pē sī Ī-kàu-tô͘, á hit-ê Sepanga lâng sī Thian-chú kàu-tô͘. It-chhè chiah-ê khang-khòe, Friday chin kín tō chò hó, koh lóng bô lâu-lo̍h chheⁿ-hoan chhut-hiān kòe ê hûn-jiah. Só͘-í, tán góa koh khì hia, nā m̄-sī khò chhiū-nâ hit-ê kak-lo̍h kí hong-hiòng, góa kiông boeh bē jīn-tit hit-ê só͘-chāi. 

Jiân-āu, góa khai-sí kap góa sin-lâi ê nn̄g-ê chú-bîn sió kau-tâm chi̍t-ē. In tiāⁿ-tio̍h ē im-sí, a̍h hō͘ chhoe hiòng lâm, kàu pa̍t-ê hái-hōaⁿ, kàu hia in mā ē hông chia̍h khì, che kap in hō͘ hong chhoe-cháu im-sí kāng ì-sù. Á ká-sú in ē-tit an-choân chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ, in ē án-chóaⁿ chò? I kóng, i m̄-chai. M̄-koh, chiàu i khòaⁿ, in tú-tio̍h hit-chióng tu̍t-kek, he chhèng-siaⁿ, he hóe-kng, í-keng hō͘ in kiaⁿ kah boeh-sí, i siong-sìn, in ē kā cho̍k-jîn kóng, bô tńg-khì ê lâng sī hō͘ lûi-kong hām sih-nah phah-sí, m̄-sī hō͘ lâng thâi-sí. I kóng, che i chai-iáⁿ, in-ūi i ū thiaⁿ-tio̍h in kō͘ ka-tī ê ōe, án-ne hoah lâi hoah khì. In-ūi in án-chóaⁿ to siūⁿ bē-kàu, lâng ná ē-tàng phùn hóe, pàng lûi, koh chhiú bián gia̍h, chi̍t-ē-á tō phah-sí lâng? Chit-ūi lāu-hoan kóng ê bô m̄-tio̍h. In-ūi, āu-lâi góa thiaⁿ kóng, chū án-ne í-āu, chheⁿ-hoan m̄-bat koh lâi-kàu chit-ê tó, in hō͘ hit sì-ê lâng só͘ kóng ê kò͘-sū kiaⁿ kah boeh-sí (khòaⁿ-lâi, hit sì-lâng ū tô kòe tōa-hái). In siong-sìn, siáng nā lâi hit-ê tiòng-siâ ê tó-sū, pit-tēng hō͘ thiⁿ-sîn ê hóe sio-sí. M̄-koh, chit-sî góa iáu m̄-chai che, só͘-í ū chi̍t-tōaⁿ tn̂g sî-kan, it-ti̍t teh tam-sim, choân-oân teh thê-hông. Chit-sî, goán ū sì-ê lâng, tio̍h sûi-sî chún-pī tī khui-khoah ê goân-iá, mō͘-hiám tùi-khòng chi̍t-pah ê lâng.

我 ê 島今有居民 ah, 我感覺 in 是我 ê 百姓. 我常在歡喜 án-ne 想, 感覺家己是一个國王. 首先, 規个島是我 ê 財產, 所以, 對我 ê 領土我有絕對 ê 權利. 其次, 我 ê 百姓完全服從 -- 我是絕對 ê 統治者, mā 是立法者. In ê 命是我所救, 必要 ê 時, in 願意為我獻出家己 ê 性命. 值得注意 ê 是, 雖罔我干焦有三个百姓, in 屬三種無仝 ê 宗教: Friday 是新教徒, in 老爸是異教徒, á 彼个 Sepanga 人是天主教徒. 不而過, tī 我 ê 領土, 我允准宗教自由. 不過, 這是順紲講一下 niâ.

救出彼兩个虛弱 ê 俘虜, 安搭 in 蹛 kap 歇睏 ê 所在了後, 我開始思考創寡啥予 in 食. 首先, 我吩咐 Friday ùi 羊陣掠一隻拄好大 ê 羊仔去刣. 我剁山羊 ê 後腿, kā 切塊, 叫 Friday 提去煮 koh 𤉙. 我保證, 彼是一路 kài 好食 ê 羊肉 kap 羊肉湯. 這是 tī 外口煮, 因為我 m̄-bat tī 厝內燃火煮食. 我 kā 好料提到新布篷, tī hia 排桌椅, 和 in 做伙坐落來食, ná 食 ná 開講, 鼓勵 in, 安慰 in. Friday 是我 ê 翻譯, 伊為老爸翻譯, mā 予 Sepanga 人聽, 因為 Sepanga 人 ê 番仔話講了袂䆀.

食一頓粗飽了, 我叫 Friday 駛一隻獨木舟去提阮 ê musket 和其他武器, 因為轉來 ê 時 siuⁿ 趕緊, kā he 留 tī 戰場. 隔工, 我又吩咐伊去埋 hiah-ê 生番 ê 死體, he tī hia 曝日, 真緊 tō 會臭. 我 mā 交代伊 kā 生番食人肉宴賰落來 hiah-ê 可怕 ê 骨頭和肉屑仔埋埋掉, 這我毋敢想欲家己去做 -- 莫講埋, tō 講行過 hia, 我看 to 毋敢看. 一切 chiah-ê 工課, Friday 真緊 tō 做好, koh lóng 無留落生番出現過 ê 痕跡. 所以, 等我 koh 去 hia, 若毋是靠樹林彼个角落指方向, 我強欲袂認得彼个所在. 

然後, 我開始 kap 我新來 ê 兩个子民小交談一下. 首先, 我叫 Friday 問 in 老爸, 對坐獨木舟走 ê 生番 ê 看法, in 敢會 koh 轉來, 𤆬一大陣人, 濟 kah 咱無法度抵抗. 伊 ê 第一反應是, 彼隻獨木舟無法度活過彼暗 ê 大風雨. In 定著會淹死, a̍h 予吹向南, 到別个海岸, 到 hia in mā 會 hông 食去, 這 kap in 予風吹走淹死仝意思. Á 假使 in 會得安全上岸, in 會按怎做? 伊講, 伊毋知. M̄-koh, 照伊看, in 拄著彼種突擊, he 銃聲, he 火光, 已經予 in 驚 kah 欲死, 伊相信, in 會 kā 族人講, 無轉去 ê 人是予雷公和 sih-nah 拍死, 毋是予人刣死. Koh 講, in 看著 ê 兩个人, its Friday 和我, 是落凡來消滅 in ê 天神 a̍h 天兵, 毋是人攑武器. 

伊講, 這伊知影, 因為伊有聽著 in kō͘ 家己 ê 話, án-ne 喝來喝去. 因為 in 按怎 to 想袂到, 人 ná 會當噴火, 放雷, koh 手免攑, 一下仔 tō 拍死人? 這位老番講 ê 無毋著. 因為, 後來我聽講, 自 án-ne 以後, 生番 m̄-bat koh 來到這个島, in 予彼四个人所講 ê 故事驚 kah 欲死 (看來, 彼四人有逃過大海). In 相信, siáng 若來彼个中邪 ê 島嶼, 必定予天神 ê 火燒死. M̄-koh, 這時我猶毋知這, 所以有一段長時間, 一直 teh 擔心, 全員 teh 提防. 這時, 阮有四个人, 著隨時準備 tī 開闊 ê 原野, 冒險對抗一百个人.

16.8

My island was now peopled, and I thought myself very rich in subjects; and it was a merry reflection, which I frequently made, how like a king I looked. First of all, the whole country was my own property, so that I had an undoubted right of dominion. Secondly, my people were perfectly subjected—I was absolutely lord and lawgiver—they all owed their lives to me, and were ready to lay down their lives, if there had been occasion for it, for me. It was remarkable, too, I had but three subjects, and they were of three different religions—my man Friday was a Protestant, his father was a Pagan and a cannibal, and the Spaniard was a Papist. However, I allowed liberty of conscience throughout my dominions. But this is by the way.

As soon as I had secured my two weak, rescued prisoners, and given them shelter, and a place to rest them upon, I began to think of making some provision for them; and the first thing I did, I ordered Friday to take a yearling goat, betwixt a kid and a goat, out of my particular flock, to be killed; when I cut off the hinder-quarter, and chopping it into small pieces, I set Friday to work to boiling and stewing, and made them a very good dish, I assure you, of flesh and broth; and as I cooked it without doors, for I made no fire within my inner wall, so I carried it all into the new tent, and having set a table there for them, I sat down, and ate my own dinner also with them, and, as well as I could, cheered them and encouraged them. Friday was my interpreter, especially to his father, and, indeed, to the Spaniard too; for the Spaniard spoke the language of the savages pretty well.

After we had dined, or rather supped, I ordered Friday to take one of the canoes, and go and fetch our muskets and other firearms, which, for want of time, we had left upon the place of battle; and the next day I ordered him to go and bury the dead bodies of the savages, which lay open to the sun, and would presently be offensive. I also ordered him to bury the horrid remains of their barbarous feast, which I could not think of doing myself; nay, I could not bear to see them if I went that way; all which he punctually performed, and effaced the very appearance of the savages being there; so that when I went again, I could scarce know where it was, otherwise than by the corner of the wood pointing to the place.

I then began to enter into a little conversation with my two new subjects; and, first, I set Friday to inquire of his father what he thought of the escape of the savages in that canoe, and whether we might expect a return of them, with a power too great for us to resist. His first opinion was, that the savages in the boat never could live out the storm which blew that night they went off, but must of necessity be drowned, or driven south to those other shores, where they were as sure to be devoured as they were to be drowned if they were cast away; but, as to what they would do if they came safe on shore, he said he knew not; but it was his opinion that they were so dreadfully frightened with the manner of their being attacked, the noise, and the fire, that he believed they would tell the people they were all killed by thunder and lightning, not by the hand of man; and that the two which appeared—viz. Friday and I—were two heavenly spirits, or furies, come down to destroy them, and not men with weapons. /

This, he said, he knew; because he heard them all cry out so, in their language, one to another; for it was impossible for them to conceive that a man could dart fire, and speak thunder, and kill at a distance, without lifting up the hand, as was done now: and this old savage was in the right; for, as I understood since, by other hands, the savages never attempted to go over to the island afterwards, they were so terrified with the accounts given by those four men (for it seems they did escape the sea), that they believed whoever went to that enchanted island would be destroyed with fire from the gods. This, however, I knew not; and therefore was under continual apprehensions for a good while, and kept always upon my guard, with all my army: for, as there were now four of us, I would have ventured upon a hundred of them, fairly in the open field, at any time.
