16.2 Kā sái-chûn ê hong-hoat kà hō͘ Friday

Put-jî-kò, góa chhōe tio̍h nn̄g-tè, khòaⁿ sī iáu put-chí-á hó, tō tāng-chhiú chò chûn-phâng. Khai bē-chió khùi-la̍t, iū-koh in-ūi bô chiam, lí siūⁿ mā chai, thīⁿ kah oai-ko chhi̍h-chhoa̍h, chòe-āu chò hó chi̍t-tè bái kô͘-kô͘ ê saⁿ-kak chûn-phâng, he tī Eng-kok goán kā kiò chò iûⁿ-keng phâng (shoulder-of-mutton sail); iōng ê sî ē-bīn keng hoâiⁿ-koaiⁿ, téng-bīn koh keng chi̍t-ki siâ-kut, ná-chhiūⁿ it-poaⁿ tn̂g-théng hit-chióng phâng án-ne. Chit-chióng phâng góa kài gâu chhau-chok, che hām góa ùi Barbary tô-cháu ê sî sái ê hit-chiah chûn ê phâng kāng-khoán, tī kò͘-sū ê thâu-chêng pō͘-hūn góa ū kóng tio̍h che.

Góa khai chiong-kīn nn̄g-kò goe̍h chò chit-ê khang-khòe, its chè-chō hām chong-pī ûi-koaiⁿ kap chûn-phâng. Góa kā he chò kah chin chiâu-chn̂g. Góa tī ûi-koaiⁿ ke chi̍t-tiâu soh-á, téng-bīn kòa chi̍t-tè sió-phâng, án-ne tī chìⁿ-hong ê sî ū pang-chān. Koh-khah tiōng-iàu ê sī, góa tī chûn-bóe koh chng chi̍t-ê tōa, iōng lâi sái-chûn. Sui-bóng góa put-kò sī chō-chûn ê pòaⁿ-tháng sai, m̄-koh góa chai chiah-ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ ū-iōng koh chin iàu-kín, tō chīn-la̍t kā chò hō͘ hó, chóng-sǹg kā oân-sêng. Chè-chō tiong-kan, góa tong-jiân tú-tio̍h chē-chē sit-pāi, só͘ khai ê khùi-la̍t chha-put-to hām chō chûn pún-sin pêⁿ chē.

Chò oân it-chhè liáu-āu, góa kā sái-chûn hâng-hêng ê hong-hoat kà hō͘ Friday, sui-bóng i chiok gâu kò to̍k-bo̍k-chiu, m̄-koh iú-koan phâng hām tōa ê tāi-chì i bô pòaⁿ-phiat. Ka-chài, chit só͘-chāi hán-tit o͘-im thiⁿ, chin chió ū bū, sīm-chì m̄-bat ū, bô siáⁿ su-iàu lô-keⁿ, àm-sî chóng-sī khòaⁿ ē-tio̍h thiⁿ-chheⁿ, ji̍t-sî khòaⁿ ē-tio̍h hái-hōaⁿ. Tî-hui sī hō͘-kùi, m̄-koh kàu hit-sî, mā bô lâng goān-ì chhut-mn̂g, m̄-koán sī kiâⁿ-lō͘ a̍h chhut-hái.

Kàu taⁿ, góa í-keng koaiⁿ tī chit só͘-chāi 27 nî. Sui-jiân chòe-kīn saⁿ-nî ū chit-ê sió-kiáⁿ chò-phōaⁿ, che lán ē-sái mài kā sǹg ji̍p-khì, in-ūi seng-oa̍h chōng-hóng í-keng kap kòe-khì tōa bô-kāng. Góa phō chi̍t-ê kám-un ê sim, kap khí-chho͘ kāng-khoán kì-liām góa teng-lio̍k ê chiu-nî. Tong-chho͘ nā ū lí-iû kì-liām, chit-má koh-khah sī án-ne. In-ūi góa ū koh-khah chē sū-si̍t chèng-bêng Sîn tùi góa ê chiàu-kò͘, ū hi-bāng ē-tit kín koh ū-hāu tit-tio̍h kái-kiù. Góa ê sim í-keng ū bêng-khak ê ìn-siōng, tit-kiù ê ji̍t-chí í-keng kàu chhiú-thâu, m̄-bián tī chia koh tán chi̍t-nî. Put-jî-kò, góa kè-sio̍k chò-sit, chhī thâu-seⁿ. Góa chiàu-siông óe-thô͘, chèng-choh, ûi iûⁿ-khian. Góa chhái-siu pô-tô, kā phak-koaⁿ, mā chiàu-siông chò it-chhè khang-khòe.

Chit-sî, hō͘-kùi kàu-ūi, goán pí éng-kòe lóng kiu chhù-lāi khah chē. Goán í-keng kā sin chûn siu hó-sè, kā sóa ji̍p góa khí-chho͘ kóng kòe, kō͘ pâi-á sià-hòe ê hit-tiâu sió-khe, tán tiùⁿ-lâu ê sî kā thoa chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ. Góa kiò Friday óe chi̍t-ê sió chûn-ò, tōa-sè tú-hó hō͘ i khò, chhim-tō͘ tú-hó hō͘ i phû. Tán thè-lâu, goán tī ò-kháu chō chi̍t-ê tòng-chúi ê kian-kò͘ chúi-pà. Chûn thêng tī hia, bē hō͘ hái-chúi im. Goán koh kā khàm chē-chē chhiū-oe, ba̍t kah ná chhù-kòa, hó-thang jia-hō͘. Chū án-ne, goán taⁿ teh tán 11-goeh hām 12-goe̍h lâi, hit-sî goán boeh chhut-hoat khì mō͘-hiám.

Hōaⁿ-kùi kàu-ūi, tòe thiⁿ-khì piàn hó, góa ê kè-ōe koh tńg-lâi, khai-sí ta̍k-kang bô-êng chhut-phâng ê tāi-chì. Tē-it hāng tāi-chì sī khoán kàu-gia̍h ê niû-si̍t, chún-pī hâng-hêng ê hòe, koh phah-sǹg chi̍t/nn̄g lé-pài lāi phah-khui chûn-ò, hō͘ chûn lo̍h-chúi. Chi̍t chá-khí, góa teh bô-êng kî-tiong chi̍t-hāng sū, tō kiò Friday khì hái-piⁿ chhōe khòaⁿ ū hái-ku bô, che goán múi lé-pài khì lia̍h chi̍t-pái, chia̍h ku ê nūi hām bah. Friday khì bô kú, chi̍t-ē-á cháu tńg-lâi, thiàu kòe goán gōa-chhiûⁿ, ká-ná kha bô ta̍h tē a̍h kha-thiap. Góa iáu-bōe khui-chhùi, i tō tōa-siaⁿ hoah góa: 

"O chú-lâng! O chú-lâng! O pi-ai ah! O hāi ah!" -- 

"Án-chóaⁿ sioh, Friday?" góa mn̄g. 

"O, hia hit-pêng," i kóng, "chi̍t, nn̄g, saⁿ chiah to̍k-bo̍k-chiu; chi̍t, nn̄g, saⁿ!" 

Thiaⁿ i án-ne kóng, góa kiò-sī ū la̍k-chiah; m̄-koh koh chi̍t-ē mn̄g, goân-lâi sī saⁿ-chiah. 

"Heh, Friday," góa kóng, "m̄-bián kiaⁿ." 

Góa tō chīn-liōng kā chō͘-táⁿ.

16.2 Kā 駛船 ê 方法教予 Friday

不而過, 我揣著兩塊, 看是猶不止仔好, tō 動手做船帆. 開袂少氣力, 又閣因為無針, 你想 mā 知, 紩 kah 歪膏揤斜, 最後做好一塊䆀糊糊 ê 三角船帆, he tī 英國阮 kā 叫做羊肩帆 (shoulder-of-mutton sail); 用 ê 時下面弓橫杆, 頂面 koh 弓一支斜骨, ná 像一般長艇彼種帆 án-ne. 這種帆我 kài gâu 操作, 這和我 ùi Barbary 逃走 ê 時駛 ê 彼隻船 ê 帆仝款, tī 故事 ê 頭前部份我有講著這.

我開將近兩個月做這个工課, its 製造和裝備桅杆 kap 船帆. 我 kā 彼做 kah 真 chiâu-chn̂g. 我 tī 桅杆加一條索仔, 頂面掛一塊小帆, án-ne tī 搢風 ê 時有幫贊. 閣較重要 ê 是, 我 tī 船尾 koh 裝一个舵, 用來駛船. 雖罔我不過是造船 ê 半桶司, m̄-koh 我知 chiah-ê 物件有用 koh 真要緊, tō 盡力 kā 做予好, 總算 kā 完成. 製造中間, 我當然拄著濟濟失敗, 所開 ê 氣力差不多和造船本身平濟.

做完一切了後, 我 kā 駛船航行 ê 方法教予 Friday, 雖罔伊足 gâu 划獨木舟, m̄-koh 有關帆和舵 ê 代誌伊無半撇. 看我扞舵, 駛船 tī 海上來來去去, 船帆踅動, 隨航行路線 ê 改變 teh 變化, liâm-mi 這爿, liâm-mi 彼爿. 伊看著一切 chiah-ê, 規个著驚 kah 徛 tī hia 袂振動. M̄-koh, 予伊小可用一下, 我教伊熟似 chiah-ê 物件, 真緊伊已經是一个熟手. 但是, 羅經我按怎 to 無法度教 kah 伊了解. 佳哉, 這所在罕得烏陰天, 真少有霧, 甚至 m̄-bat 有, 無啥需要羅經, 暗時總是看會著天星, 日時看會著海岸. 除非是雨季, 毋過到彼時, mā 無人願意出門, 毋管是行路 a̍h 出海.

到今, 我已經關 tī 這所在 27 年. 雖然最近三年有這个小囝做伴, 這咱會使莫 kā 算入去, 因為生活狀況已經 kap 過去大無仝. 我抱一个感恩 ê 心, kap 起初仝款紀念我登陸 ê 週年. 當初若有理由紀念, 這馬閣較是 án-ne. 因為我有閣較濟事實證明神對我 ê 照顧, 有希望會得緊 koh 有效得著解救. 我 ê 心已經有明確 ê 印象, 得救 ê 日子已經到手頭, 毋免 tī chia koh 等一年. 不而過, 我繼續做穡, 飼頭牲. 我照常挖塗, 種作, 圍羊圈. 我採收葡萄, kā 曝乾, mā 照常做一切工課.

這時, 雨季到位, 阮比往過 lóng 勼厝內較濟. 阮已經 kā 新船收好勢, kā 徙入我起初講過, kō͘ 排仔卸貨 ê 彼條小溪, 等漲流 ê 時 kā 拖上岸. 我叫 Friday 挖一个小船澳, 大細拄好予伊靠, 深度拄好予伊浮. 等退流, 阮 tī 澳口造一个擋水 ê 堅固水壩. 船停 tī hia, 袂予海水淹. 阮 koh kā 崁濟濟樹椏, 密 kah ná 厝蓋, hó-thang 遮雨. 自 án-ne, 阮今 teh 等 11 月和 12 月來, 彼時阮欲出發去冒險.

旱季到位, 綴天氣變好, 我 ê 計畫 koh 轉來, 開始逐工無閒出帆 ê 代誌. 第一項代誌是款夠額 ê 糧食, 準備航行 ê 貨, koh 拍算一兩禮拜內拍開船澳, 予船落水. 一早起, 我 teh 無閒其中一項事, tō 叫 Friday 去海邊揣看有海龜無, 這阮每禮拜去掠一擺, 食龜 ê nūi 和肉. Friday 去無久, 一下仔走轉來, 跳過阮外牆, ká-ná 跤無踏地 a̍h 跤 thiap. 我猶未開喙, 伊 tō 大聲喝我: 

"O 主人! O 主人! O 悲哀 ah! O 害 ah!" -- 

"按怎 sioh, Friday?" 我問. 

"O, hia 彼爿," 伊講, "一, 兩, 三隻獨木舟; 一, 兩, 三!" 

聽伊 án-ne 講, 我叫是有六隻; m̄-koh koh 一下問, 原來是三隻. 

"Heh, Friday," 我講, "毋免驚." 

我 tō 盡量 kā 助膽.

However, I found two pieces which appeared pretty good, and with these I went to work; and with a great deal of pains, and awkward stitching, you may be sure, for want of needles, I at length made a three-cornered ugly thing, like what we call in England a shoulder-of-mutton sail, to go with a boom at bottom, and a little short sprit at the top, such as usually our ships’ long-boats sail with, and such as I best knew how to manage, as it was such a one as I had to the boat in which I made my escape from Barbary, as related in the first part of my story.

I was near two months performing this last work, viz. rigging and fitting my masts and sails; for I finished them very complete, making a small stay, and a sail, or foresail, to it, to assist if we should turn to windward; and, what was more than all, I fixed a rudder to the stern of her to steer with. I was but a bungling shipwright, yet as I knew the usefulness and even necessity of such a thing, I applied myself with so much pains to do it, that at last I brought it to pass; though, considering the many dull contrivances I had for it that failed, I think it cost me almost as much labour as making the boat.

After all this was done, I had my man Friday to teach as to what belonged to the navigation of my boat; though he knew very well how to paddle a canoe, he knew nothing of what belonged to a sail and a rudder; and was the most amazed when he saw me work the boat to and again in the sea by the rudder, and how the sail jibed, and filled this way or that way as the course we sailed changed; I say when he saw this he stood like one astonished and amazed. However, with a little use, I made all these things familiar to him, and he became an expert sailor, except that of the compass I could make him understand very little. On the other hand, as there was very little cloudy weather, and seldom or never any fogs in those parts, there was the less occasion for a compass, seeing the stars were always to be seen by night, and the shore by day, except in the rainy seasons, and then nobody cared to stir abroad either by land or sea.

I was now entered on the seven-and-twentieth year of my captivity in this place; though the three last years that I had this creature with me ought rather to be left out of the account, my habitation being quite of another kind than in all the rest of the time. I kept the anniversary of my landing here with the same thankfulness to God for His mercies as at first: and if I had such cause of acknowledgment at first, I had much more so now, having such additional testimonies of the care of Providence over me, and the great hopes I had of being effectually and speedily delivered; for I had an invincible impression upon my thoughts that my deliverance was at hand, and that I should not be another year in this place. I went on, however, with my husbandry; digging, planting, and fencing as usual. I gathered and cured my grapes, and did every necessary thing as before.

The rainy season was in the meantime upon me, when I kept more within doors than at other times. We had stowed our new vessel as secure as we could, bringing her up into the creek, where, as I said in the beginning, I landed my rafts from the ship; and hauling her up to the shore at high-water mark, I made my man Friday dig a little dock, just big enough to hold her, and just deep enough to give her water enough to float in; and then, when the tide was out, we made a strong dam across the end of it, to keep the water out; and so she lay, dry as to the tide from the sea: and to keep the rain off we laid a great many boughs of trees, so thick that she was as well thatched as a house; and thus we waited for the months of November and December, in which I designed to make my adventure.

When the settled season began to come in, as the thought of my design returned with the fair weather, I was preparing daily for the voyage. And the first thing I did was to lay by a certain quantity of provisions, being the stores for our voyage; and intended in a week or a fortnight’s time to open the dock, and launch out our boat. I was busy one morning upon something of this kind, when I called to Friday, and bid him to go to the sea-shore and see if he could find a turtle or a tortoise, a thing which we generally got once a week, for the sake of the eggs as well as the flesh. Friday had not been long gone when he came running back, and flew over my outer wall or fence, like one that felt not the ground or the steps he set his foot on; and before I had time to speak to him he cries out to me, 

“O master! O master! O sorrow! O bad!”—

“What’s the matter, Friday?” says I. 

“O yonder there,” says he, “one, two, three canoes; one, two, three!” 

By this way of speaking I concluded there were six; but on inquiry I found there were but three. 

“Well, Friday,” says I, “do not be frightened.” 

So I heartened him up as well as I could. /
