16.1 Chò chi̍t-chiah tōa to̍k-bo̍k-chiu

Chóng-kóng chi̍t-kù, chit-sî góa kui-sim teh siūⁿ hām i khì tāi-lio̍k ê kè-ōe. Góa kā i kóng, lán ē-sái chò chi̍t-chiah hām che pêⁿ-tōa, i ē-sái chē he tńg-chhù. I chi̍t-kù ōe to bô kóng, kan-ta bīn hm̄-hm̄ teh siong-sim. Góa mn̄g i, sī án-chóaⁿ lah. I koh mn̄g góa: 

"Án-chóaⁿ lí siūⁿ-khì Friday? -- góa tó-ūi chò m̄-tio̍h?" 

Góa mn̄g i siáⁿ ì-sù. Góa kā kóng, góa kin-pún bô siūⁿ-khì i. 

"Bô siūⁿ-khì!" i kóng, liân-sòa kóng kúi-ā piàn. "Ná boeh sàng Friday tńg-chhù, tńg goán pō͘-lo̍k?" 

"Án-ná," góa kóng, "Friday, lí kám bô kóng, lí hi-bāng ē-tit tńg hia?" 

"Tio̍h, tio̍h," i kóng, "hi-bāng lán nn̄g-lâng khì hia. M̄-sī Friday khì hia, Master bô khì hia." 

Chóng-kóng, bô góa, i bô siūⁿ-boeh khì hia. 

"Góa khì hia, Friday?" góa kóng. "Góa khì hia chhòng-siáⁿ?" 

Thiaⁿ-tio̍h che, i sûi ìn-ōe. 

"Lí ū chē-chē thang chò, chò hó-sū," i kóng, "lí kà iá-bân lâng-lâng chò hó, chò ba̍k-kim, un-sûn ê lâng. Lí kà in bat Sîn, pài Sîn, kòe sin seng-oa̍h."

"Ai-ah, Friday!" góa kóng, "Lí m̄-chai lí teh kóng siáⁿ lah. Góa ka-tī mā sī bû-ti ê lâng ah." 

"Sī ah, sī ah," i kóng, "lí kà góa hó, lí kà in hó." 

"Bô, bô, Friday," góa kóng, "lí tio̍h khì, bô góa. Lâu góa tī chia ka-tī tòa, ná í-chêng án-ne." 

Thiaⁿ chiah-ê ōe, i iū-koh gāng-gāng, cháu khì the̍h i pêng-siông chah ê té pó͘-thâu, kín-kín kā the̍h lâi, kau hō͘ góa. 

"Hō͘ góa che boeh chhòng-siáⁿ?" góa mn̄g i. 

"Kō͘ che thâi-sí Friday," i kóng. 

"Sī án-chóaⁿ ài thâi lí?" góa koh mn̄g. I sûi tòe-leh ìn -- 

"Sī án-chóaⁿ kiò Friday lī-khui? Thâi-sí Friday, m̄-hó kiò Friday lī-khui." 

I kóng kah chin-chêng liû-lō͘, ba̍k-sái kâm ba̍k-kîⁿ. 

Chi̍t-kù ōe, góa khòaⁿ bêng-bêng, che hián-sī i tùi góa ê chin-chêng, mā piáu-sī kian-tēng koat-sim, tō ka i kóng, í-āu mā chhiâng-chāi kóng, i nā goān-ì hām góa chò-tīn, góa éng-oán bē kiò i lī-khui.

Chéng-thé lâi kóng, ùi it-chhè hām i ê kau-tâm, góa hoat-hiān chi̍t-chióng kian-te7ng ê chêng-ì, bô mi̍h-kiāⁿ ē-tàng kā i ùi góa chia pak-khui1; góa hoat-hiān, i ài-boeh tńg-khì ka-tī kò͘-hiong ê in-iû, sī in-ūi i jia̍t-ài i ê tông-pau, hi-bāng góa khì hia hō͘ in hó. Chit-chân tāi, in-ūi góa tùi ka-tī bô kài-liām, góa tùi che chi̍t-tiám-á siūⁿ-hoat a̍h ì-hiòng to bô, só͘-í mā bô ì-goān án-ne chò. M̄-koh, góa iáu-sī ū kiông-lia̍t ê ùi chia tô-cháu ê sim-ì, che sī in-ūi hām i kau-tâm, chai-iáⁿ in hia ū 17-ê hô͘-chhiu lâng, chū án-ne, bô iân-chhiân, góa hām Friday khai-sí tāng-chhiú, boeh khì chhōe chi̍t-châng sek-ha̍p chhò ê tōa-chhiū, chò chi̍t-chiah tōa to̍k-bo̍k-chiu, hó-thang chhut-hái. Chit-ê tó chhiū-á kài chē, ū-kàu chō chûn-tu7i, to̍k-bo̍k-chiu bián-kóng, boeh chō kài chán ê tōa-chûn mā bô būn-tê. M̄-koh, góa chú-iàu teh chhōe ê, sī óa chúi-piⁿ ê chhiū-á, chûn chò hó chiah hong-piān lo̍h-chúi, bián-tit koh hoān góa í-chá ê chhò-gō͘.

Chòe-āu, Friday chhōe tio̍h chi̍t-châng. Iōng siáⁿ-khoán chhiū-á khah hó, che i khah chai kòe góa. Kàu taⁿ góa mā sī m̄-chai goán chhò ê chhâ kiò siáⁿ miâ, kan-ta chai he chiap-kīn goán kiò n̂g-kim bo̍k (fustic) ê chhiū, a̍h sī he kap Brazil âng-bo̍k (Nicaragua wood) tiong-kan, in-ūi sek-tì hām khì-bī kài sio-kāng. "Hó," i kóng, "lán ē-sái chē i kòe hái, sui-bóng ū hong mā bô iàu-kín." 

Put-jî-kò, góa ū chi̍t-ê i m̄-chai ê phah-sǹg, he tō sī boeh kā chûn ke ûi-koaiⁿ hām phâng, koh kā chng tiāⁿ hām lám-soh. Ûi-koaiⁿ chin kan-tan, góa kéng chi̍t-châng tī hū-kīn seⁿ kah chin ti̍t ê siàu-liân sam-á chhiū, hit-chióng chhiū chit-ê tó chin chē. Góa kiò Friday khì chhò, koh kà i án-chóaⁿ kā siu-chéng chò ûi-koaiⁿ. M̄-koh, chûn-phâng sī góa ê kòa-lī. Góa chai góa ū kū ê chûn-phâng, a̍h sī chián chò chi̍t-tè chi̍t-tè ê phâng-pò͘, m̄-koh he í-keng khǹg 26 nî ah, koh bô hó-hó pó-koán, mā bô siūⁿ tio̍h che iáu iōng ē tio̍h.  Só͘-tì, góa bô hoâi-gî, in lóng í-keng àu ah, sū-si̍t, tōa pō͘-hūn mā lóng sī án-ne.

16. Ùi 食人族救出俘虜

16.1 做一隻大獨木舟

總講一句, 這時我規心 teh 想和伊去大陸 ê 計畫. 我 kā 伊講, 咱會使做一隻和這平大, 伊會使坐 he 轉厝. 伊一句話 to 無講, 干焦面 hm̄-hm̄ teh 傷心. 我問伊, 是按怎 lah. 伊 koh 問我: 

"按怎你受氣 Friday? -- 我佗位做毋著?" 

我問伊啥意思. 我 kā 講, 我根本無受氣伊. 

"無受氣!" 伊講, 連紲講幾若遍. "那欲送 Friday 轉厝, 轉阮部落?" 

"Án-ná," 我講, "Friday, 你敢無講, 你希望會得轉 hia?" 

"著, 著," 伊講, "希望咱兩人去 hia. 毋是 Friday 去 hia, Master 無去 hia." 

總講, 無我, 伊無想欲去 hia. 

"我去 hia, Friday?" 我講. "我去 hia 創啥?" 

聽著這, 伊隨應話. 

"你有濟濟 thang 做, 做好事," 伊講, "你教野蠻人人做好, 做目金, 溫馴 ê 人. 你教 in bat 神, 拜神, 過新生活."

"Ai-ah, Friday!" 我講, "你毋知你 teh 講啥 lah. 我家己 mā 是無知 ê 人 ah." 

"是 ah, 是 ah," 伊講, "你教我好, 你教 in 好." 

"無, 無, Friday," 我講, "你著去, 無我. 留我 tī chia 家己蹛, ná 以前 án-ne." 

聽 chiah-ê 話, 伊又閣愣愣, 走去提伊平常扎 ê 短斧頭, 緊緊 kā 提來, 交予我. 

"予我這欲創啥?" 我問伊. 

"Kō͘ 這刣死 Friday," 伊講. 

"是按怎愛刣你?" 我 koh 問. 伊隨綴 leh 應 -- 

"是按怎叫 Friday 離開? 刣死 Friday, 毋好叫 Friday 離開." 

伊講 kah 真情流露, 目屎含目墘. 

一句話, 我看明明, 這顯示伊對我 ê 真情, mā 表示堅定決心, tō kā 伊講, 以後 mā 常在講, 伊若願意和我做陣, 我永遠袂叫伊離開.

整體來講, ùi 一切和伊 ê 交談, 我發現一種堅定 ê 情意, 無物件會當 kā 伊 ùi 我 chia 剝開; 我發現, 伊愛欲轉去家己故鄉 ê 因由, 是因為伊熱愛伊 ê 同胞, 希望我去 hia 予 in 好. 這層代, 因為我對家己無概念, 我對這一點仔想法 a̍h 意向 to 無, 所以 mā 無意願 án-ne 做. M̄-koh, 我猶是有強烈 ê ùi chia 逃走 ê 心意, 這是因為和伊交談, 知影 in hia 有 17 个鬍鬚人, 自 án-ne, 無延 chhiân, 我和 Friday 開始動手, 欲去揣一叢適合剉 ê 大樹, 做一隻大獨木舟, hó-thang 出海. 這个島樹仔 kài 濟, 有夠造船隊, 獨木舟免講, 欲造 kài chán ê 大船 mā 無問題. M̄-koh, 我主要 teh 揣 ê, 是倚水邊 ê 樹仔, 船做好才方便落水, 免得 koh 犯我以早 ê 錯誤.

最後, Friday 揣著一叢. 用啥款樹仔較好, 這伊較知過我. 到今我 mā 是毋知阮剉 ê 柴叫啥名, 干焦知彼接近阮叫黃金木 (fustic) ê 樹, a̍h 是彼 kap Brazil 紅木 (Nicaragua wood) 中間, 因為色致和氣味 kài 相仝. Friday 拍算 kō͘ 火 kā 樹箍燒空成做獨木舟, m̄-koh 我教伊按怎 kō͘ 家私來挖. 等我教伊用家私了, 伊 tō 做 kah 真順手. 經過 cpt 一個月 ê 拍拚, 阮 tō kā 船造好, 造 kah 真 lè-táu. 尤其是, 因為我教 Friday 用斧頭, 阮 kā 船 ê 外部刜 koh 削 kah 和正規 ê 船仝款. Án-ne 了後, 不而過著 koh 經過將近兩禮拜, 阮才 kā 船 kō͘ 滾木一寸一寸徙動, 捒落水. 一旦落水, 這隻船凊彩 mā 會當載 20 人.

等船落水, 雖罔大, 予我著驚 ê 是, Friday 會當扭掠 koh 緊速操控這隻船, kā 轉踅, 划伊行進. 我 tō 問伊, 若願意, 咱會使坐這隻船去冒險. 

"好," 伊講, "咱會使坐伊過海, 雖罔有風 mā 無要緊." 

不而過, 我有一个伊毋知 ê 拍算, he tō 是欲 kā 船加桅杆和帆, koh kā 裝碇和纜索. 桅杆真簡單, 我揀一叢 tī 附近生 kah 真直 ê 少年杉仔樹, 彼種樹這个島真濟. 我叫 Friday 去剉, koh 教伊按怎 kā 修整做桅杆. M̄-koh, 船帆是我 ê 掛慮. 我知我有舊 ê 船帆, a̍h 是剪做一塊一塊 ê 帆布, m̄-koh 彼已經囥 26 年 ah, koh 無好好保管, mā 無想著這猶用會著.  所致, 我無懷疑, in lóng 已經漚 ah, 事實, 大部份 mā lóng 是 án-ne.

CHAPTER XVI.

RESCUE OF PRISONERS FROM CANNIBALS

16.1

Upon the whole, I was by this time so fixed upon my design of going over with him to the continent that I told him we would go and make one as big as that, and he should go home in it. He answered not one word, but looked very grave and sad. I asked him what was the matter with him. He asked me again, 

“Why you angry mad with Friday?—what me done?” 

I asked him what he meant. I told him I was not angry with him at all. 

“No angry!” says he, repeating the words several times; “why send Friday home away to my nation?” 

“Why,” says I, “Friday, did not you say you wished you were there?” 

“Yes, yes,” says he, “wish we both there; no wish Friday there, no master there.” 

In a word, he would not think of going there without me. “I go there, Friday?” says I; “what shall I do there?” 

He turned very quick upon me at this. 

“You do great deal much good,” says he; “you teach wild mans be good, sober, tame mans; you tell them know God, pray God, and live new life.” /

“Alas, Friday!” says I, “thou knowest not what thou sayest; I am but an ignorant man myself.” 

“Yes, yes,” says he, “you teachee me good, you teachee them good.” 

“No, no, Friday,” says I, “you shall go without me; leave me here to live by myself, as I did before.” 

He looked confused again at that word; and running to one of the hatchets which he used to wear, he takes it up hastily, and gives it to me. 

“What must I do with this?” says I to him. 

“You take kill Friday,” says he. 

“What must kill you for?” said I again. 

He returns very quick—

“What you send Friday away for? Take kill Friday, no send Friday away.” 

This he spoke so earnestly that I saw tears stand in his eyes. In a word, I so plainly discovered the utmost affection in him to me, and a firm resolution in him, that I told him then and often after, that I would never send him away from me if he was willing to stay with me.

Upon the whole, as I found by all his discourse a settled affection to me, and that nothing could part him from me, so I found all the foundation of his desire to go to his own country was laid in his ardent affection to the people, and his hopes of my doing them good; a thing which, as I had no notion of myself, so I had not the least thought or intention, or desire of undertaking it. But still I found a strong inclination to attempting my escape, founded on the supposition gathered from the discourse, that there were seventeen bearded men there; and therefore, without any more delay, I went to work with Friday to find out a great tree proper to fell, and make a large periagua, or canoe, to undertake the voyage. There were trees enough in the island to have built a little fleet, not of periaguas or canoes, but even of good, large vessels; but the main thing I looked at was, to get one so near the water that we might launch it when it was made, to avoid the mistake I committed at first. /

At last Friday pitched upon a tree; for I found he knew much better than I what kind of wood was fittest for it; nor can I tell to this day what wood to call the tree we cut down, except that it was very like the tree we call fustic, or between that and the Nicaragua wood, for it was much of the same colour and smell. Friday wished to burn the hollow or cavity of this tree out, to make it for a boat, but I showed him how to cut it with tools; which, after I had showed him how to use, he did very handily; and in about a month’s hard labour we finished it and made it very handsome; especially when, with our axes, which I showed him how to handle, we cut and hewed the outside into the true shape of a boat. After this, however, it cost us near a fortnight’s time to get her along, as it were inch by inch, upon great rollers into the water; but when she was in, she would have carried twenty men with great ease.

When she was in the water, though she was so big, it amazed me to see with what dexterity and how swift my man Friday could manage her, turn her, and paddle her along. So I asked him if he would, and if we might venture over in her. 

“Yes,” he said, “we venture over in her very well, though great blow wind.” 

However I had a further design that he knew nothing of, and that was, to make a mast and a sail, and to fit her with an anchor and cable. As to a mast, that was easy enough to get; so I pitched upon a straight young cedar-tree, which I found near the place, and which there were great plenty of in the island, and I set Friday to work to cut it down, and gave him directions how to shape and order it. But as to the sail, that was my particular care. I knew I had old sails, or rather pieces of old sails, enough; but as I had had them now six-and-twenty years by me, and had not been very careful to preserve them, not imagining that I should ever have this kind of use for them, I did not doubt but they were all rotten; and, indeed, most of them were so. /
