Chiah-ê siūⁿ-hoat teh kah góa ê sim-koaⁿ khai-sí boeh hòng-khì. Che sī chhi-chhám ê kéng-siōng. Hit-chiah chûn, chiū kò͘-chō khòaⁿ sī Sepanga chûn, ân-ân gia̍p tī nn̄g-lia̍p chio̍h-thâu tiong-kan. Chûn-bóe hām āu-chhng lóng hō͘ hái-éng phah phòa. Tiâu tī chio̍h-ta ê chêng-chhng, chông kah chiok béng, chêng ûi-koaiⁿ hām chú ûi-koaiⁿ lóng at-tn̄g tó tī kah-pán. M̄-koh, chûn-thâu siâ-ûi (bowsprit) hó-hó, chûn-thâu mā iáu kian-kò͘. 13.6 就構造看, 這是 Sepanga 船
Chiah-ê 想法硩 kah 我 ê 心肝開始欲放棄. Kā 船徙到岸邊 ê 一條小溪, 我上岸坐 tī 一塊懸地, 陷落沉思, 心情袂定, 對這逝路半驚惶半期待. Tng-teh 思考 ê 時, 我發覺海潮 ê 變化, teh 漲潮 ah. 這時開始, 幾點鐘內無適合出發. 自 án-ne, 我隨想著, 應該揣一个上懸 ê 所在, 去 hia 觀察漲潮 ê 時, 彼兩港水按怎流, án-ne tō 會當判斷, 萬一予一港急流沖出海, 是毋是有可能予另外彼港 kō͘ 仝款 ê 速度 koh 沖轉來. 拄想著這, 我隨看著附近有一个小山崙, 雙爿 ê 海面 lóng 看會著, tī hia 會當清楚看著海流, 會當知影引導家己踅轉來 ê 路. Tī chia, 我發現, 退流是沿島 ê 南爿向外流, 所致, 漲潮 ê 急流是沿島 ê 北爿流向海岸. 轉來 ê 時, 只要 kā 小船沿島 ê 北爿行, 自然我 tō 會予漲潮 ê 急流 chhōa 轉來.
受著這个觀察 ê 鼓勵, 我決定 tī 明仔早起第一擺漲潮出發. 彼暗, 我崁水手值夜大衣, 倒 tī 獨木舟歇睏. 隔工我 tō 出海 ah. 頭起先, 我向正北小可出去, 一直到我感覺著彼港急流, 向東, 緊緊拖我行, m̄-koh 無像頂擺 tī 南爿拄著 ê hiah 雄, 無奪去我對小船 ê 控制. Kō͘ 槳強力駛船, 我緊速划向破船, 無到兩點鐘, 我已經到位.
這是悽慘 ê 景象. 彼隻船, 就構造看是 Sepanga 船, 絚絚挾 tī 兩粒石頭中間. 船尾和後艙 lóng 予海湧拍破. 牢 tī 石礁 ê 前艙, 傱 kah 足猛, 前桅杆和主桅杆 lóng at 斷倒 tī 甲板. M̄-koh, 船頭斜桅 (bowsprit) 好好, 船頭 mā 猶堅固. 等我駛倚船 ê 時, 一隻狗出現 tī 船頂, 看著我過來, 伊吠 koh 吼. 我一下 kā kho͘, 伊隨跳落海, 泅向我. 我 kā 拖到小船頂, 看伊枵 koh 喙焦 kah 欲死 ê 款. 我予伊一塊 pháng, 伊隨孝孤 kah ná 像 tī 雪地枵兩禮拜 ê 野狼. 然後, 我 koh 予伊啉汫水, 若無 kā 阻擋, 凡勢伊會啉 kah 煏肚.
Án-ne 了後, 我上船. 我看著 ê 第一情境, 是兩个淹死 ê 人, in 雙手相 siâm, 倒 tī 前艙 ê 灶跤. 我結論, che 的確有可能, 船挵著 ê 時, 透大風雨, 海湧相連紲沖到船頂, chiah-ê 人予繼續來 ê 海水絞 kah 擋袂牢, 袂輸淹 tī 水底. 除了彼隻狗, 船頂無半个有性命 ê 物件. 我 mā 無看 e 無予海水浸歹 ê 物件. 有幾桶酒, 毋知是葡萄酒 a̍h brandy, tī 船艙下底, 因為水已經退, 今看會著. M̄-koh, 酒桶 siuⁿ 大, 搬袂振動. 另外, 我 koh 看著幾跤箱仔, 相信彼是海員 ê. 我搬兩跤箱仔到小船, 無先檢查內面有啥.
假使船尾好好, 傱破 ê 是船頭, 我相信這逝 tō 價值 ah. Ùi 彼兩跤箱仔, 我會當斷定, 船頂 ê 家伙袂少. 依照伊 ê 路線來看, 我 mā 臆會出, 這是 ùi Brazil 南部 ê Boenos Ayres, its 南 Amerika ê Rio de la Plata 出發, 經過 Brazil 欲去 Gulf of Mexico ê Havannah, 然後可能欲去 Sepanga. 所致, 船頂必定有金銀財寶, m̄-koh che 今對啥 to 無路用 ah lah. 船頂 ê 人今 lóng 按怎 ah? 我當然毋知影.

These thoughts so oppressed my mind that I began to give over my enterprise; and having hauled my boat into a little creek on the shore, I stepped out, and sat down upon a rising bit of ground, very pensive and anxious, between fear and desire, about my voyage; when, as I was musing, I could perceive that the tide was turned, and the flood come on; upon which my going was impracticable for so many hours. Upon this, presently it occurred to me that I should go up to the highest piece of ground I could find, and observe, if I could, how the sets of the tide or currents lay when the flood came in, that I might judge whether, if I was driven one way out, I might not expect to be driven another way home, with the same rapidity of the currents. This thought was no sooner in my head than I cast my eye upon a little hill which sufficiently overlooked the sea both ways, and from whence I had a clear view of the currents or sets of the tide, and which way I was to guide myself in my return. Here I found, that as the current of ebb set out close by the south point of the island, so the current of the flood set in close by the shore of the north side; and that I had nothing to do but to keep to the north side of the island in my return, and I should do well enough.
Encouraged by this observation, I resolved the next morning to set out with the first of the tide; and reposing myself for the night in my canoe, under the watch-coat I mentioned, I launched out. I first made a little out to sea, full north, till I began to feel the benefit of the current, which set eastward, and which carried me at a great rate; and yet did not so hurry me as the current on the south side had done before, so as to take from me all government of the boat; but having a strong steerage with my paddle, I went at a great rate directly for the wreck, and in less than two hours I came up to it. /
It was a dismal sight to look at; the ship, which by its building was Spanish, stuck fast, jammed in between two rocks. All the stern and quarter of her were beaten to pieces by the sea; and as her forecastle, which stuck in the rocks, had run on with great violence, her mainmast and foremast were brought by the board—that is to say, broken short off; but her bowsprit was sound, and the head and bow appeared firm. When I came close to her, a dog appeared upon her, who, seeing me coming, yelped and cried; and as soon as I called him, jumped into the sea to come to me. I took him into the boat, but found him almost dead with hunger and thirst. I gave him a cake of my bread, and he devoured it like a ravenous wolf that had been starving a fortnight in the snow; I then gave the poor creature some fresh water, with which, if I would have let him, he would have burst himself. /
After this I went on board; but the first sight I met with was two men drowned in the cook-room, or forecastle of the ship, with their arms fast about one another. I concluded, as is indeed probable, that when the ship struck, it being in a storm, the sea broke so high and so continually over her, that the men were not able to bear it, and were strangled with the constant rushing in of the water, as much as if they had been under water. Besides the dog, there was nothing left in the ship that had life; nor any goods, that I could see, but what were spoiled by the water. There were some casks of liquor, whether wine or brandy I knew not, which lay lower in the hold, and which, the water being ebbed out, I could see; but they were too big to meddle with. I saw several chests, which I believe belonged to some of the seamen; and I got two of them into the boat, without examining what was in them. /
Had the stern of the ship been fixed, and the forepart broken off, I am persuaded I might have made a good voyage; for by what I found in those two chests I had room to suppose the ship had a great deal of wealth on board; and, if I may guess from the course she steered, she must have been bound from Buenos Ayres, or the Rio de la Plata, in the south part of America, beyond the Brazils to the Havannah, in the Gulf of Mexico, and so perhaps to Spain. She had, no doubt, a great treasure in her, but of no use, at that time, to anybody; and what became of the crew I then knew not.
