Hō͘-kùi ū-sî khah tn̂g, ū-sî khah té, khòaⁿ hong ê hong-hiòng, che sī góa phó͘-phó͘-á ê koan-chhat. Thàu-kòe keng-giām, góa chai-iáⁿ ak-hō͘ ē phòa-pēⁿ, só͘-í góa thê-chêng chún-pī chia̍h-mi̍h, án-ne tī hō͘-kùi ê sî, góa tō chīn-liōng bih tī chhù-lāi, ē-tàng bián chhut-mn̂g.
Kàu hō͘-kùi, góa chhōe tāi-chì lâi chò, mā chin sek-ha̍p chit-lō sî-kan, in-ūi góa iáu khiàm chē-chē mi̍h-kiāⁿ, tio̍h khai sî-kan koh kut-la̍t chò. Te̍k-pia̍t sī, góa bat chhì kúi-ā pái boeh chò nâ-á, m̄-koh chhōe tio̍h ê ki-tiâu lóng siuⁿ chhè, chò bē sêng. Kòe-khì ê keng-giām taⁿ ū lō͘-iōng: gín-á sî, góa kah-ì khiā tī siâⁿ-ni̍h ê nâ-á tiàm thâu-chêng, khòaⁿ sai-hū chò nâ-á a̍h liú-tiâu chè-phín. Hām it-poaⁿ gín-á kāng-khoán, góa hèng chhih-chhih, m̄-nā koan-chhat in chò ê chhiú-lō͘, koh-khah ài chhap-chhiú, chū án-ne o̍h ē-hiáu chò nâ-á ê ki-su̍t, taⁿ chí-sī khiàm sek-ha̍p ê châi-liāu. Hut-jiân, góa siūⁿ tio̍h chhò lâi chò khi̍t-á ê hit-chióng chhiū ê ki-tiâu, he hoān-sè chhiūⁿ Eng-kok ê liú-tiâu hiah jūn, koat-tēng boeh kā chhì khòaⁿ-māi.
Chū án-ne, keh-kang góa khì góa ê pia̍t-chong (góa án-ne kā chheng-ho͘), chhò chi̍t-kóa iù ki-tiâu, hoat-hiān he chin ha̍h góa ê su-iàu. Tán góa koh khì ê sî, góa chah chi̍t-ki té pó͘-thâu, chún-pī boeh chhò chē-chē, chin-kín góa tō chhōe tio̍h, in-ūi hia ū chin chē chit-chióng chhiū-á. Hiah-ê ki-tiâu, góa kā pho͘ tī lî-pa lāi pha̍k, pha̍k ta ē-sái iōng ê sî, tō kā poaⁿ lâi soaⁿ-tōng. Koh-lâi hit-ê hō͘-kùi ê sî, góa tō chīn-liōng pian chē-chē nâ-á, iōng lâi poaⁿ thô͘ a̍h-sī chah a̍h té mi̍h-kiāⁿ. Sui-bóng góa ê chò-kang bô kài súi, m̄-koh góa kā chò kah ū-kàu ha̍h-iōng. Āu-lâi, góa it-ti̍t bô khiàm nâ-á, kū-ê iōng pháiⁿ, góa sûi koh chò koh-khah chē sin ê, iû-kî sī chò chi̍t-kóa ióng koh chhim-té ê nâ-á. Tán góa siu-sêng chē-chē chhek-á ê sî, góa tō kā iōng nâ-á té, m̄-bián iōng tē-á.
Tán góa khai chē-chē sî-kan, kái-koat chò nâ-á ê būn-tê liáu-āu, góa iū siūⁿ boeh tāng-chhiú kái-koat lēng-gōa nn̄g-ê būn-tê. Siú-sian, góa bô iông-khì thang té e̍k-thé. Góa sui-bóng ū nn̄g-kha tháng-á, m̄-koh he í-keng té boeh tīⁿ ê rum chiú. Lēng-gōa, góa iáu ū chi̍t-kóa po-lê koàn-á -- ū-ê phó͘-thong tōa, ū-ê sì-kak hêng, iōng-lâi té chúi, chiú, tt. Góa bô chú-chia̍h ê oe-á, kan-ta ū chi̍t-ki tōa tê-kó͘, he sī góa ùi tōa chûn chah lo̍h-lâi. Hit-ê tê-kó͘ siuⁿ tōa, bô sek-ha̍p iōng lâi chú-chia̍h -- chhin-chhiūⁿ kóng chú thng a̍h kûn bah. Tē-jī hāng góa su-iàu ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ sī hun-chhoe, tān-sī góa iáu bô hoat-tō͘ chò. M̄-koh, lo̍h-bóe góa mā ū siūⁿ chhut chi̍t-ê phiat-pō͘. Tī joa̍h-thiⁿ, a̍h sī kóng ta-kùi ê sî, góa bô-êng teh chèng tē-jī pâi ê khi̍t-á, koh bô-êng pian nâ-á. Kāng hit-sî, góa koh khai-sí lēng-gōa chi̍t-ê tāi-chì, jî-chhiáⁿ chiàm khì pí ī-liāu koh-khah chē ê sî-kan.

7.5 到雨季, 我揣代誌來做
今我知 ah, 一年 ê 季節, 毋是像 tī Europa án-ne 分做熱天和寒天, 愛分做雨季和焦季, 大概是 án-ne 分 -- 2 月後一半, 規个 3 月, 和 4 月前一半 -- 雨季, 這時日頭拄 tī 赤道頂 a̍h 倚 tī 赤道.
4 月後一半, 規个 5 月, 6 月和 7 月, 和 8 月前一半 -- 焦季, 這時日頭 tī 赤道北爿.
8 月後一半, 規个 9 月, 和 10 月前一半 -- 雨季, 這時日頭轉來赤道頂.
10 月後一半, 規个 11 月, 12 月和 1 月, 和 2 月前一半 -- 焦季, 這時日頭 tī 赤道南爿.
雨季有時較長, 有時較短, 看風 ê 方向, 這是我普普仔 ê 觀察. 透過經驗, 我知影沃雨會破病, 所以我提前準備 chia̍h-mi̍h, án-ne tī 雨季 ê 時, 我 tō 盡量覕 tī 厝內, ē-tàng 免出門.
到雨季, 我揣代誌來做, mā 真適合 chit-lō 時間, 因為我猶欠濟濟物件, 著開時間 koh 骨力做. 特別是, 我 bat 試幾若擺欲做籃仔, m̄-koh 揣著 ê 枝條 lóng siuⁿ 脆, 做袂成. 過去 ê 經驗今有路用: 囡仔時, 我佮意徛 tī 城 ni̍h ê 籃仔店頭前, 看師傅做籃仔 a̍h 柳條製品. 和一般囡仔仝款, 我興 chhih-chhih, 毋但觀察 in 做 ê 手路, 閣較愛插手, 自 án-ne 學會曉做籃仔 ê 技術, 今只是欠適合 ê 材料. 忽然, 我想著剉來做杙仔 ê 彼種樹 ê 枝條, he 凡勢像英國 ê 柳條 hiah 韌, 決定欲 kā 試看覓.
自 án-ne, 隔工我去我 ê 別莊 (我 án-ne kā 稱呼), 剉一寡幼枝條, 發現 he 真合我 ê 需要. 等我 koh 去 ê 時, 我扎一支短斧頭, 準備欲剉濟濟, 真緊我 tō 揣著, 因為 hia 有真濟這種樹仔. Hiah-ê 枝條, 我 kā 鋪 tī 籬笆內曝, 曝焦 ē-sái 用 ê 時, tō kā 搬來山洞. 閣來彼个雨季 ê 時, 我 tō 盡量編濟濟籃仔, 用來搬塗 a̍h 是扎 a̍h 貯物件. 雖罔我 ê 做工無 kài 媠, m̄-koh 我 kā 做 kah 有夠合用. 後來, 我一直無欠籃仔, 舊个用歹, 我隨 koh 做閣較濟新 ê, 尤其是做一寡勇 koh 深底 ê 籃仔. 等我收成濟濟粟仔 ê 時, 我 tō kā 用籃仔貯, 毋免用袋仔.
等我開濟濟時間, 解決做籃仔 ê 問題了後, 我又想欲動手解決另外兩个問題. 首先, 我無容器 thang 貯液體. 我雖罔有兩跤桶仔, m̄-koh he 已經貯欲滇 ê rum 酒. 另外, 我猶有一寡玻璃罐仔 -- 有 ê 普通大, 有 ê 四角形, 用來貯水, 酒, tt. 我無煮食 ê 鍋仔, 干焦有一支大茶鈷, 彼是我 ùi 大船扎落來. 彼个茶鈷 siuⁿ 大, 無適合用來煮食 -- 親像講煮湯 a̍h 𤉙肉. 第二項我需要 ê 物件是薰吹, 但是我猶無法度做. M̄-koh, 落尾我 mā 有想出一个撇步. Tī 熱天, a̍h 是講焦季 ê 時, 我無閒 teh 種第二排 ê 杙仔, koh 無閒編籃仔. 仝彼時, 我 koh 開始另外一个代誌, 而且佔去比預料閣較濟 ê 時間.

I found now that the seasons of the year might generally be divided, not into summer and winter, as in Europe, but into the rainy seasons and the dry seasons, which were generally thus:—The half of February, the whole of March, and the half of April—rainy, the sun being then on or near the equinox.
The half of April, the whole of May, June, and July, and the half of August—dry, the sun being then to the north of the line.
The half of August, the whole of September, and the half of October—rainy, the sun being then come back.
The half of October, the whole of November, December, and January, and the half of February—dry, the sun being then to the south of the line.
The rainy seasons sometimes held longer or shorter as the winds happened to blow, but this was the general observation I made. After I had found by experience the ill consequences of being abroad in the rain, I took care to furnish myself with provisions beforehand, that I might not be obliged to go out, and I sat within doors as much as possible during the wet months. /
This time I found much employment, and very suitable also to the time, for I found great occasion for many things which I had no way to furnish myself with but by hard labour and constant application; particularly I tried many ways to make myself a basket, but all the twigs I could get for the purpose proved so brittle that they would do nothing. It proved of excellent advantage to me now, that when I was a boy, I used to take great delight in standing at a basket-maker’s, in the town where my father lived, to see them make their wicker-ware; and being, as boys usually are, very officious to help, and a great observer of the manner in which they worked those things, and sometimes lending a hand, I had by these means full knowledge of the methods of it, and I wanted nothing but the materials, when it came into my mind that the twigs of that tree from whence I cut my stakes that grew might possibly be as tough as the sallows, willows, and osiers in England, and I resolved to try. /
Accordingly, the next day I went to my country house, as I called it, and cutting some of the smaller twigs, I found them to my purpose as much as I could desire; whereupon I came the next time prepared with a hatchet to cut down a quantity, which I soon found, for there was great plenty of them. These I set up to dry within my circle or hedge, and when they were fit for use I carried them to my cave; and here, during the next season, I employed myself in making, as well as I could, a great many baskets, both to carry earth or to carry or lay up anything, as I had occasion; and though I did not finish them very handsomely, yet I made them sufficiently serviceable for my purpose; thus, afterwards, I took care never to be without them; and as my wicker-ware decayed, I made more, especially strong, deep baskets to place my corn in, instead of sacks, when I should come to have any quantity of it.
Having mastered this difficulty, and employed a world of time about it, I bestirred myself to see, if possible, how to supply two wants. I had no vessels to hold anything that was liquid, except two runlets, which were almost full of rum, and some glass bottles—some of the common size, and others which were case bottles, square, for the holding of water, spirits, &c. I had not so much as a pot to boil anything, except a great kettle, which I saved out of the ship, and which was too big for such as I desired it—viz. to make broth, and stew a bit of meat by itself. The second thing I fain would have had was a tobacco-pipe, but it was impossible to me to make one; however, I found a contrivance for that, too, at last. I employed myself in planting my second rows of stakes or piles, and in this wicker-working all the summer or dry season, when another business took me up more time than it could be imagined I could spare.
