3.6 Hong kā goán chhoe lī hâng-sòaⁿ [Gí-im]

M̄-koh, góa chhóng-chhóng pōng-pōng, sit-khì lí-tì, ba̍k-chiu kheh-kheh thiaⁿ hoàn-sióng ê an-pâi. Chū án-ne, chûn chéng hó-sè, hòe chng hó-sè, tāi-chì lóng chiàu hia̍p-gī, iû kāng-chûn ê tông-phōaⁿ khoán hó-sè. Góa tī 1659 nî 9 goe̍h chhe 1 bó͘ chi̍t-ê pháiⁿ sî-sîn chiūⁿ-chûn. Peh-nî chêng, góa ûi-pōe pē-bú ê ì-goān, bô kò͘ ka-tī ê lī-ek, tī Hull chiūⁿ-chûn chhut-hái, hit-ji̍t mā sī 9 goe̍h chhe 1.

Goán ê chûn tāi-khài ū 120 tùn, ū 6-mn̂g phàu, tî-liáu chûn-tiúⁿ, in kiáⁿ hām góa í-gōa, lēng-gōa iáu-ū 14-ê lâng. Chûn-téng bô siáⁿ-mih tōa-kiāⁿ hòe-bu̍t, kan-ta sī chi̍t-kóa sek-ha̍p hām o͘-lâng kau-e̍k ê thit-thô-mi̍h, chhin-chhiūⁿ chu-á, po-lê phín, lê-á khak kap kî-thaⁿ ê li-li khok-khok, iû-kî sī sè-hāng ê hàm-kiàⁿ, to-á, ka-chián, té pó͘-thâu, téng-téng.

Tī góa chiūⁿ-chûn ê kāng hit-kang, goán tō chhut-phâng. Goán iân hái-hōaⁿ hiòng pak hâng-hêng, kè-ōe sái kàu pak-hūi 10 chì 12 tō͘ tiong-kan, hoâiⁿ-kòe tōa-hái, ti̍t-ti̍t sái hiòng Afrika. Che sī hit tong-sî khì Afrika thong-siông kiâⁿ ê hâng-sòaⁿ. Goán iân Brazil hái-hōaⁿ kiâⁿ, iân-lō͘ thiⁿ-khì lóng chin hó, kan-ta sī ū-kàu joa̍h. Lo̍h-bóe, goán lâi kàu St Augustino Hái-kak, ùi chia goán lī-khui hái-hōaⁿ, oat hiòng tōa-hái, bô koh khòaⁿ tio̍h lio̍k-tē. Goán ê hong-hiòng sī tang-pak pak, ká-ná sī boeh sái hiòng Fenando de Noronha sió-tó, kàu hiah-ê sió-tó chiah ùi in tang-pêng lī-khui. 

Goán chiàu chit-ê lō͘-sòaⁿ, koh kiâⁿ liōng-iok 12 kang tō thong-kòe chhiah-tō. Kin-kì goán chòe-āu chi̍t-pái ê koan-chhek, goán í-keng lâi kàu pak-hūi 7-tō͘ 22-hun ê só͘-chāi. Goán tú-tú boeh cháu-chhut chûn-chhng khì khòaⁿ tàu-té sī kàu siáⁿ-mih só͘-chāi ê sî, chûn-té hiông-hiông lê tio̍h soa-tē, kui-chiah chûn chū án-ne tòng-tiām, bē tín bē tāng. Bô thêng ê tōa-éng it-ti̍t chhiâng kàu chûn-téng, goán lóng kám-kak chit-siaⁿ hāi ah, tō kín-kín koh kiu-ji̍p chûn-chhng, bih tī piah-kak lâi tô-pī hái-éng pho hām chúi-chhiâng ê chhiong-kek.

M̄-bat tú-tio̍h chit-khoán chōng-hóng ê lâng, sī bô khó-lêng biô-siá a̍h-sī kám-siū goán hit-sî ê kiaⁿ-hiâⁿ. Goán m̄-chai hit-sî goán sī tī tó-ūi, mā m̄-chai goán hō͘ hái-éng éng khí-lâi ê sī siáⁿ-khoán ê lio̍k-tē -- sī hái-tó a̍h-sī tāi-lio̍k? sī ū lâng tòa a̍h-sī bô lâng-ian ê hong-iá tē-khu? 3.6 風 kā 阮吹離航線 [語音]

毋過, 我衝衝碰碰, 失去理智, 目睭瞌瞌聽幻想 ê 安排. 自 án-ne, 船整好勢, 貨裝好勢, 代誌 lóng 照協議, 由仝船 ê 同伴款好勢. 我 tī 1659 年 9 月 chhe 1 某一个歹時辰上船. 八年前, 我違背爸母 ê 意願, 無顧家己 ê 利益, tī Hull 上船出海, 彼日 mā 是 9 月初 1.

阮 ê 船大概有 120 噸, 有 6 門砲, 除了船長, in 囝和我以外, 另外猶有 14 个人. 船頂無啥物大件貨物, 干焦是一寡適合和烏人交易 ê 𨑨迌物, 親像珠仔, 玻璃品, 螺仔殼 kap 其他 ê li-li khok-khok, 尤其是細項 ê 譀鏡, 刀仔, 鉸剪, 短斧頭, 等等.

Tī 我上船 ê 仝彼工, 阮 tō 出帆. 阮沿海岸向北航行, 計畫駛到北緯 10 至 12 度中間, 橫過大海, 直直駛向 Afrika. 這是彼當時去 Afrika 通常行 ê 航線. 阮沿 Brazil 海岸行, 沿路天氣 lóng 真好, 干焦是有夠熱. 落尾, 阮來到 St Augustino 海角, ùi chia 阮離開海岸, 斡向大海, 無 koh 看著陸地. 阮 ê 方向是東北北, ká-ná 是欲駛向 Fenando de Noronha 小島, 到 hiah-ê 小島才 ùi in 東爿離開.

阮照這个路線, koh 行量約 12 工 tō 通過赤道. 根據阮最後一擺 ê 觀測, 阮已經來到北緯 7 度 22 分 ê 所在. 想袂到, 這時阮拄著一陣強烈 ê 捲螺仔風, mā 會使講是大風颱, kā 阮吹離所知 ê 航線. 風颱起頭絞東南風, 紲落轉做西北風, 然後固定透東北風, 風勢猛 kah 真恐怖. 連紲 12 工, 阮啥 to 無法度做, 干焦是放船隨風綴浪漂流, kā 阮 ê 命運交 hō͘ 風 chhōa. 老實講, tī 這 12 工中間, 我逐工 lóng 擔心會 hō͘ 海湧吞食, 船頂其他 ê 人, mā 無一个 káⁿ 期望會得活命.

Tī 這種困境中間, 除了恐怖 ê 風雨, 船頂有一个人因為熱帶病死去, koh 有一个人和彼个囡仔兄去 hō͘ 海湧洗落海. 到第 12 工, 天氣小可較好, 船長做一个詳細 ê 觀察, 發現阮 ê 船已經到 cpt [差不多] 北緯 11 度 ê 所在, 毋過阮離 St Augustino 海角西爿猶差 11 經度. 所致, 伊知影, 阮今是 tī Guiana 海岸附近, its tī Brazil 北部, 已經超過 Amazon 河, 行向 Orinoco 河 (一般 lóng kā 叫做大河) ê 方向. 船長開始和我參詳航行 ê 路線. 伊主張 kā 船駛轉去 Brazil 海岸, 因為船已經 teh 漏水, 而且損害 kah 真嚴重.

我堅決反對, 和伊同齊看 Amerika 海岸 ê 海圖了後, 阮得著 ê 結論是, tī 阮進入 Caribbee 群島以前, 無所在有人蹛, 會當 hō͘ 阮得著救援. 自 án-ne, 阮決定駛向 Barbado 群島去. 照阮 ê 估計, 只要航行 tī 海上, 避開 Meksiko 灣 ê 海流, tī 15 工左右 tō 會當到位. 到 hia, 阮定著 tō kā 船修理, koh 補充食物和人員, 若無, 是無法度 koh 航行去 Afrika 海岸.

決定了後, 阮 tō 改變航向, 向西北西駛去, 希望會得到達某一个英國 ê 島嶼, tī hia 得著救援. 不而過, 阮 ê 航行方向並毋是阮家己會得決定. 到北緯 12 度 18 分 ê 所在, 阮又閣拄著第二陣大暴風, kō͘ 仝款向西 ê 勢力, kā 阮吹離正常 ê 航線. Tī 這種情形下, tō 講阮無死 tī 海上, mā 有 hō͘ 生番拆食 ê 風險, 閣較免講轉去阮家己 ê 家園.

Tī 這種困境中, 風猶是吹 kah 真猛. 一工透早, 船頂有一个人忽然大聲喝, "陸地!" 阮拄拄欲走出船艙去看到底是到啥物所在 ê 時, 船底雄雄犁著沙地, 規隻船自 án-ne 擋恬, 袂振袂動. 無停 ê 大湧一直沖到船頂, 阮 lóng 感覺這聲害 ah, tō 緊緊 koh 勼入船艙, 覕 tī 壁角來逃避海湧泡和水沖 ê 衝擊.

毋捌拄著這款狀況 ê 人, 是無可能描寫 a̍h 是感受阮彼時 ê 驚惶. 阮毋知彼時阮是 tī 佗位, mā 毋知阮 hō͘ 海湧湧起來 ê 是啥款 ê 陸地 -- 是海島 a̍h 是大陸? 是有人蹛 a̍h 是無人煙 ê 荒野地區? 風雨雖然有較細, 毋過猶是真猛, 阮知影, 阮 ê 船 koh 擋無幾分鐘, 隨時 to 有可能挵 kah 破 kê-kê, 除非出現奇蹟, 風雨會忽然停睏. 

總講一句, 阮逐个坐做伙, 你看我, 我看你, teh 等待即刻欲來 ê 死亡, 逐人 lóng 準備好欲去別个世界, 因為 tī 這个世界, 阮已經創無步 ah lah. 阮眼前 ê 安慰, its 阮所有 ê 安慰, 佳哉和阮 ê 期望相倒反, 船無挵破, 而且船長講, 風已經 teh 開始減弱 ah lah.

But I was hurried on, and obeyed blindly the dictates of my fancy rather than my reason; and, accordingly, the ship being fitted out, and the cargo furnished, and all things done, as by agreement, by my partners in the voyage, I went on board in an evil hour, the 1st September 1659, being the same day eight years that I went from my father and mother at Hull, in order to act the rebel to their authority, and the fool to my own interests.

Our ship was about one hundred and twenty tons burden, carried six guns and fourteen men, besides the master, his boy, and myself. We had on board no large cargo of goods, except of such toys as were fit for our trade with the negroes, such as beads, bits of glass, shells, and other trifles, especially little looking-glasses, knives, scissors, hatchets, and the like.

The same day I went on board we set sail, standing away to the northward upon our own coast, with design to stretch over for the African coast when we came about ten or twelve degrees of northern latitude, which, it seems, was the manner of course in those days. We had very good weather, only excessively hot, all the way upon our own coast, till we came to the height of Cape St. Augustino; from whence, keeping further off at sea, we lost sight of land, and steered as if we were bound for the isle Fernando de Noronha, holding our course N.E. by N., and leaving those isles on the east./ 

In this course we passed the line in about twelve days’ time, and were, by our last observation, in seven degrees twenty-two minutes northern latitude, when a violent tornado, or hurricane, took us quite out of our knowledge. It began from the south-east, came about to the north-west, and then settled in the north-east; from whence it blew in such a terrible manner, that for twelve days together we could do nothing but drive, and, scudding away before it, let it carry us whither fate and the fury of the winds directed; and, during these twelve days, I need not say that I expected every day to be swallowed up; nor, indeed, did any in the ship expect to save their lives.

In this distress we had, besides the terror of the storm, one of our men die of the calenture, and one man and the boy washed overboard. About the twelfth day, the weather abating a little, the master made an observation as well as he could, and found that he was in about eleven degrees north latitude, but that he was twenty-two degrees of longitude difference west from Cape St. Augustino; so that he found he was upon the coast of Guiana, or the north part of Brazil, beyond the river Amazon, toward that of the river Orinoco, commonly called the Great River; and began to consult with me what course he should take, for the ship was leaky, and very much disabled, and he was going directly back to the coast of Brazil.

I was positively against that; and looking over the charts of the sea-coast of America with him, we concluded there was no inhabited country for us to have recourse to till we came within the circle of the Caribbee Islands, and therefore resolved to stand away for Barbadoes; which, by keeping off at sea, to avoid the indraft of the Bay or Gulf of Mexico, we might easily perform, as we hoped, in about fifteen days’ sail; whereas we could not possibly make our voyage to the coast of Africa without some assistance both to our ship and to ourselves.

With this design we changed our course, and steered away N.W. by W., in order to reach some of our English islands, where I hoped for relief. But our voyage was otherwise determined; for, being in the latitude of twelve degrees eighteen minutes, a second storm came upon us, which carried us away with the same impetuosity westward, and drove us so out of the way of all human commerce, that, had all our lives been saved as to the sea, we were rather in danger of being devoured by savages than ever returning to our own country.

In this distress, the wind still blowing very hard, one of our men early in the morning cried out, “Land!” and we had no sooner run out of the cabin to look out, in hopes of seeing whereabouts in the world we were, than the ship struck upon a sand, and in a moment her motion being so stopped, the sea broke over her in such a manner that we expected we should all have perished immediately; and we were immediately driven into our close quarters, to shelter us from the very foam and spray of the sea.

It is not easy for any one who has not been in the like condition to describe or conceive the consternation of men in such circumstances. We knew nothing where we were, or upon what land it was we were driven—whether an island or the main, whether inhabited or not inhabited. As the rage of the wind was still great, though rather less than at first, we could not so much as hope to have the ship hold many minutes without breaking into pieces, unless the winds, by a kind of miracle, should turn immediately about. /

In a word, we sat looking upon one another, and expecting death every moment, and every man, accordingly, preparing for another world; for there was little or nothing more for us to do in this. That which was our present comfort, and all the comfort we had, was that, contrary to our expectation, the ship did not break yet, and that the master said the wind began to abate.
