Tī ji̍t-sî ū chi̍t/nn̄g-pái, góa kám-kak hn̄g-hn̄g khòaⁿ tio̍h Teneriffe Soaⁿ ê soaⁿ-chiam, he sī Canary Kûn-tó siōng koân ê soaⁿ. Hit-sî góa chiok siūⁿ boeh mō͘-hiám chi̍t-ē, kā chûn sái kòe-khì. M̄-koh, chhì nn̄g-pái lóng hō͘ chìⁿ-hong giú tò tńg-lâi. Jî-chhiáⁿ, tùi goán ê sió chûn lâi kóng, hit-sî ê hái-éng mā siuⁿ tōa. Só͘-í, góa koat-tēng chiàu goân-lâi ê kè-ōe, kè-sio̍k iân hái-hōaⁿ kiâⁿ.
Tī goán lī-khui chit-ê só͘-chāi liáu-āu, ū kúi-ā pái goán tio̍h khò-hōaⁿ the̍h chiáⁿ-chúi. Te̍k-pia̍t sī ū chi̍t-pái, tī thàu-chá, goán pha-tiāⁿ tī chi̍t-ê put-chí-á koân ê sió hái-kak, hit-sî tú-hó teh móa-lâu, goán tī hia tán hái-tiòng, boeh sái khah ji̍p-khì. Xury ê ba̍k-chiu pí góa khah lāi, khin-siaⁿ kiò góa kóng, siōng-hó sī mài sái siuⁿ óa hōaⁿ.
"In-ūi," i kóng, "lí khòaⁿ, soaⁿ-kha hia khùn chi̍t-chiah khó-phà ê koài-bu̍t, khùn kah sí-sí."

"Góa kā phah-sí? I chia̍h góa chi̍t-chhùi!" -- ì-sù sī kóng, chi̍t-chhùi tō kā i chia̍h tiāu.
Góa bô koh tùi i kóng siáⁿ, pàng i kè-sio̍k tó tī hia, tō kéng chi̍t-ki siōng tōa ê rifle chhèng, hóe-io̍h chng hó, sat 2-lia̍p chhèng-chí, koh kā khǹg lo̍h-lâi. Tùi goán lâi kóng, che khak-si̍t sī la̍h-bu̍t, m̄-sī si̍t-bu̍t. Góa kám-kak khó-sioh, ūi-tio̍h chi̍t-ê tùi goán bô lō͘-iōng ê tōng-bu̍t lâi sún-sit saⁿ-hūn ê hóe-io̍h. Put-jî-kò, Xury kóng i boeh ti̍h i, só͘-í i chiūⁿ-chûn, kiò góa kā té pó͘-thâu hō͘ i.

2.5 獅皮對阮有使用價值 [語音]
因為往過我捌航行到這个海岸, 我知影, Canary 群島和 Cape de Verde 群島離 Afrika 大陸無遠. 毋過, 阮船頂無儀器通測定阮這个所在 ê 緯度, 而且, 我 mā 袂記得 chiah-ê 群島 ê 緯度, 所致, 無法度揣著 chiah-ê 群島, mā 毋知當時著離開海岸, 駛向海島. 若毋是 án-ne, 我定著真簡單 tō 揣著其中 ê 一个海島. 今, 我唯一 ê 希望是: 沿海岸航行, 一直到英國人做生理 ê 所在. Án-ne 我 tō 會拄著往來 ê 船隻, in tō 會救阮.
我估計, 我 chit-má 這个所在是 tī Morocco 王國和烏人地區中間; 這个所在干焦是野獸, 無人蹛. 烏人因為驚 Moor 人, 已經放棄 chia, 遷徙到較南爿去. Moor 人又嫌 chia ê 土地 siuⁿ 瘦, 無值得居住. 無論是 Moor 人 a̍h 烏人, 雙爿 lóng 放棄 chia, 因為 chia 藏足濟虎, 獅, 豹等等兇猛 ê 野獸. 所以, Moor 人干焦來 chia 拍獵, 逐改來 lóng 兩三千人, 袂輸是部隊. 事實上, 阮沿海岸航行將近 100 mai [160 km], 日時干焦看著拋荒, 無人 ê 土地, á 暗時聽著 ê mā 干焦是野獸 ê 吼聲和吠聲.
Tī 日時有一兩擺, 我感覺遠遠看著 Teneriffe 山 ê 山尖, 彼是 Canary 群島上懸 ê 山. 彼時我足想欲冒險一下, kā 船駛過去. 毋過, 試兩擺 lóng hō͘ 搢風搝倒轉來. 而且, 對阮 ê 小船來講, 彼時 ê 海湧 mā siuⁿ 大. 所以, 我決定照原來 ê 計畫, 繼續沿海岸行.
Tī 阮離開這个所在了後, 有幾若擺阮著靠岸提汫水. 特別是有一擺, tī 透早, 阮拋碇 tī 一个不止仔懸 ê 小海角, 彼時拄好 teh 滿流, 阮 tī hia 等海漲, 欲駛較入去. Xury ê 目睭比我較利, 輕聲叫我講, 上好是莫駛 siuⁿ 倚岸.
"因為," 伊講, "你看, 山跤 hia 睏一隻可怕 ê 怪物, 睏 kah 死死."
我看伊指 ê 位, 果然看著一隻怪物, 彼是一隻可怕 ê 大隻獅, 倒 tī 海岸邊山崁 ê 涼影 ni̍h teh 睏.
"Xury," 我講, "你上岸去 kā 拍死." Xury 著一驚, 講:
"我 kā 拍死? 伊食我一喙!" -- 意思是講, 一喙 tō kā 伊食掉.
我無 koh 對伊講啥, 放伊繼續倒 tī hia, tō 揀一支上大 ê rifle 銃, 火藥裝好, 塞 2 粒銃子, koh kā 囥落來. 然後, 我 koh 提另外一支銃, 裝 2 粒銃子, koh 第三支銃 (阮 lóng 總有三支), 裝 5 粒銃子.
我 kō͘ 第一支銃, 好好瞄準, 對獅頭 kā 彈去. 毋過因為伊倒 ê 姿勢跤骨小可閘著鼻, 銃子彈著跤頭趺, 拍斷伊 ê 跤骨. 伊起生驚, 吼一聲, 發現跤斷去, koh 跋倒落去. 然後伊用三支跤徛起來, 出一个我毋捌聽過 ê 可怕吼聲. 我小可著驚, 那會無拍著伊 ê 頭. 不而過, 我隨攑第二支銃, 想講伊得欲走 ah, tō koh 彈伊 ê 頭, 真歡喜看著伊 un 落, 出一个輕輕 ê 聲, tō 倒 tī hia 搐.
彼時, Xury 膽較在 ah, tō 求我 hō͘ 伊上岸.
"好, 你去," 我講.
自 án-ne, 彼个囡仔隨跳落水, 一手攑短銃, kō͘ 猶一手掰水泅上岸, 到獅仔身邊, kō͘ 銃尾倚伊 ê 耳, 對伊 ê 頭 koh 彈一銃, 送伊上天.
對阮來講, 這確實是獵物, 毋是食物. 我感覺可惜, 為著一个對阮無路用 ê 動物來損失三份 ê 火藥. 不而過, Xury 講伊欲挃伊, 所以伊上船, 叫我 kā 短斧頭 hō͘ 伊.
"欲創啥, Xury?" 我問.
"取伊 ê 頭," 伊講.
但是, Xury 鏨袂斷伊 ê 頭, 干焦剁一支跤蹄扎轉來, he 大 kah 真驚人.
毋過, 我 tī 心內 án-ne 想, 凡勢獅皮對阮有使用價值, tō 決定欲剝彼領皮. 自 án-ne, Xury 和我過去剝. Xury 對這項工課比我較 gâu, 因為我完全捎無摠. 確實, 阮為這項代誌無閒規工, 終其尾才剝落規領獅皮, kā 披 tī 船艙 ê 頂面, 過兩工 tō hō͘ 日頭曝焦, 後來我 tō 鋪 he 來倒.

As I had been one voyage to this coast before, I knew very well that the islands of the Canaries, and the Cape de Verde Islands also, lay not far off from the coast. But as I had no instruments to take an observation to know what latitude we were in, and not exactly knowing, or at least remembering, what latitude they were in, I knew not where to look for them, or when to stand off to sea towards them; otherwise I might now easily have found some of these islands. But my hope was, that if I stood along this coast till I came to that part where the English traded, I should find some of their vessels upon their usual design of trade, that would relieve and take us in.
By the best of my calculation, that place where I now was must be that country which, lying between the Emperor of Morocco’s dominions and the negroes, lies waste and uninhabited, except by wild beasts; the negroes having abandoned it and gone farther south for fear of the Moors, and the Moors not thinking it worth inhabiting by reason of its barrenness; and indeed, both forsaking it because of the prodigious number of tigers, lions, leopards, and other furious creatures which harbour there; so that the Moors use it for their hunting only, where they go like an army, two or three thousand men at a time; and indeed for near a hundred miles together upon this coast we saw nothing but a waste, uninhabited country by day, and heard nothing but howlings and roaring of wild beasts by night.
Once or twice in the daytime I thought I saw the Pico of Teneriffe, being the high top of the Mountain Teneriffe in the Canaries, and had a great mind to venture out, in hopes of reaching thither; but having tried twice, I was forced in again by contrary winds, the sea also going too high for my little vessel; so, I resolved to pursue my first design, and keep along the shore.
Several times I was obliged to land for fresh water, after we had left this place; and once in particular, being early in morning, we came to an anchor under a little point of land, which was pretty high; and the tide beginning to flow, we lay still to go farther in. Xury, whose eyes were more about him than it seems mine were, calls softly to me, and tells me that we had best go farther off the shore; /
“For,” says he, “look, yonder lies a dreadful monster on the side of that hillock, fast asleep.” /
I looked where he pointed, and saw a dreadful monster indeed, for it was a terrible, great lion that lay on the side of the shore, under the shade of a piece of the hill that hung as it were a little over him.
“Xury,” says I, “you shall on shore and kill him.” Xury, looked frighted, and said:
“Me kill! he eat me at one mouth!”—one mouthful he meant.
However, I said no more to the boy, but bade him lie still, and I took our biggest gun, which was almost musket-bore, and loaded it with a good charge of powder, and with two slugs, and laid it down; then I loaded another gun with two bullets; and the third (for we had three pieces) I loaded with five smaller bullets./
I took the best aim I could with the first piece to have shot him in the head, but he lay so with his leg raised a little above his nose, that the slugs hit his leg about the knee and broke the bone. He started up, growling at first, but finding his leg broken, fell down again; and then got upon three legs, and gave the most hideous roar that ever I heard. I was a little surprised that I had not hit him on the head; however, I took up the second piece immediately, and though he began to move off, fired again, and shot him in the head, and had the pleasure to see him drop and make but little noise, but lie struggling for life. /
Then Xury took heart, and would have me let him go on shore.
“Well, go,” said I: /
so the boy jumped into the water and taking a little gun in one hand, swam to shore with the other hand, and coming close to the creature, put the muzzle of the piece to his ear, and shot him in the head again, which despatched him quite.
This was game indeed to us, but this was no food; and I was very sorry to lose three charges of powder and shot upon a creature that was good for nothing to us. However, Xury said he would have some of him; so he comes on board, and asked me to give him the hatchet.
“For what, Xury?” said I.
“Me cut off his head,” said he. /
However, Xury could not cut off his head, but he cut off a foot, and brought it with him, and it was a monstrous great one.
I bethought myself, however, that, perhaps the skin of him might, one way or other, be of some value to us; and I resolved to take off his skin if I could. So Xury and I went to work with him; but Xury was much the better workman at it, for I knew very ill how to do it. Indeed, it took us both up the whole day, but at last we got off the hide of him, and spreading it on the top of our cabin, the sun effectually dried it in two days’ time, and it afterwards served me to lie upon.
