Góa kè-ōe ê tē-it pō͘ sī, ké-kúi kā hit-ê Moor lâng kóng, tio̍h khoán kóa ka-tī chia̍h ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ, góa kā i kóng, lán bô eng-tong chia̍h chú-lâng ê pháng. I kóng, án-ne tio̍h, tō khì khoán chi̍t tōa nâ ê piáⁿ, saⁿ koàn chheng-chúi kàu sam-pán téng. Góa chai goán chú-lâng ê chiú siuⁿ-á khǹg tī tó-ūi, hit-ê siuⁿ-á ê khoán, khòaⁿ khí-lâi sī chi̍t-ê Eng-kok chiàn-lī-phín. Thàn Moor lâng chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ ê sî, góa poaⁿ chi̍t-kóa chiú kàu sam-pán téng, khǹg tī ká-ná chú-lâng pún-lâi khǹg ê ūi. Góa mā poaⁿ liōng-iok 1/2 hundredweight [25 kg] ê bi̍t-la̍h, koh ū chi̍t-pau chho͘ sòaⁿ, té pó͘-thâu, kì-á, hām hám-á; chiah-ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ āu-lâi tùi goán lóng chin ū lō͘-iōng, iû-kî sī bi̍t-la̍h, ē-tàng chò la̍h-chek.
Góa koh tùi i chhòng chi̍t-ê pō͘, bô-gî-gō͘ i koh tio̍h-tiàu. I ê miâ hō-chò Ismael, tān-sī ta̍k-ê lóng kiò i Muley a̍h Moely, só͘-í góa mā án-ne kiò i.
"Moely," góa kóng, "lán chú-lâng ê chhèng í-keng tī sam-pán-á téng, lí ē-sái khì the̍h kóa hóe-io̍h hām chhèng-chí bô? Hoān-sè lán ē-sái ūi ka-tī phah kóa môa-u̍t (麻鷸, curlew), góa chai chú-lâng ê hóe-io̍h khǹg tī tōa-chûn téng-bīn."
"Hó," i kóng, "góa khì the̍h kóa lâi."
Chū án-ne, i khì sa chi̍t-ê tōa phôe-tē, té pōng pòaⁿ [3.3 kg] khah-ke ê hóe-io̍h, lēng-gōa chi̍t-ê phôe-tē, té 5-6 pōng [11-13 kg] ê chiáu-chhèng chhèng-chí, lóng kā khǹg tī sam-pán téng. Kāng chit-sî, góa koh tī tōa chûn-chhng chhōe tio̍h chi̍t-kóa chú-lâng ê hóe-io̍h. Góa ùi siuⁿ-á lāi chhōe tio̍h chi̍t-ki tōa chiú-kan, lāi-bīn chiú chhun chió-chió, he góa kā tò khì lēng-gōa ê kan-á lāi, kō͘ chit-ê tōa kan-á té-móa hóe-io̍h. It-chhè chún-pī thò-tòng, goán tō khai-sí chhut-káng khì tiò-hî lah.
Káng-kháu pó-lúi ê sū-peng hām goán ū se̍k-sāi, só͘-í bô kòe-lâi chù-ì goán. Chhut-kang bōe kàu 1 mai [1.6 km] hn̄g, goán tō lo̍h-phâng, khai-sí tiò-hî. Chit-sî chhoe tang-pak pak ê hong, hām góa só͘ hi-bōng--ê tian-tò-péng. In-ūi, nā thàu lâm-hong, góa tō khak-tēng ē-tàng kàu Sepanga hái-hōaⁿ khì, siōng-bô ē-tàng kàu Sepanga sai-lâm ê Cadiz hái-oan. M̄-koh, góa ê sim í-keng tiāⁿ, m̄-koán thàu siáⁿ-mih hong, chí-iàu lī-khui chit-ê khó-phà ê só͘-chāi tō hó, kî-thaⁿ--ê, kau hō͘ miā-ūn an-pâi.
Tiò chi̍t-khùn liáu-āu, goán siáⁿ to bô tiò tio̍h -- tō-kóng ū hî chia̍h-jī, góa mā bô giú tiò-koaⁿ, bián-tit Moor lâng khòaⁿ tio̍h. Góa kā Moor lâng kóng:
"Án-ne bē ēng-tit, lán chú-lâng ē bô hî thang chia̍h. Lán tio̍h kiâⁿ koh-khah chhut-khì chi̍t-ē."
I jīn-ûi án-ne bô m̄-tio̍h, tō tông-ì; in-ūi tī chûn-thâu, i tō kā chûn-phâng kòa khí-khì. In-ūi iû góa hōaⁿ tōa, góa tō kā chûn sái chhut-khì chiong-kīn 1 league [4.8 km], thêng tī hia ké-kúi boeh tiò-hî. Góa kā chûn-tōa kau hō͘ Moor gín-á hōaⁿ, hiòng-chêng kiâⁿ kàu Moor lâng hia, tī i āu-bīn àⁿ-sin ké-kúi boeh chhōe mi̍h-kiāⁿ, tō hiông-hiông siang-chhiú sak i ê ē-io, hō͘ i chhut chûn lo̍h hái.
Chit-ê Moor lâng chin gâu siû-chúi, i chi̍t-ē-á tō phû chhut hái-bīn, kiò góa hō͘ i chiūⁿ-chûn, kóng, i boeh tòe góa kàu thiⁿ-piⁿ hái-kak. I tī āu-bīn jiok chûn piàⁿ-miā siû, hit-sî bô siáⁿ hong, i chin kín tō ē jiok kàu-ūi. Góa khòaⁿ m̄-sī sè, tō ji̍p chûn-chhng, gia̍h chi̍t-ki chiáu-chhèng, góa gia̍h chhèng tùi i kóng, góa bē siong-hāi i, i nā koai-koai, góa tō pàng i soah.
"Lí chin gâu siû-chúi," góa kóng, "ē-tàng siû chiūⁿ hōaⁿ, chit-chūn bô siáⁿ hong-éng, kín siû tńg-khì, góa bē siong-hāi lí. Lí nā óa-kīn góa ê chûn, góa tō tōaⁿ lí ê thâu-khak, in-ūi góa koat-sim boeh tit-tio̍h chū-iû."
Chū án-ne, i oa̍t-sin, siû hiòng hái-hōaⁿ, góa mā siong-sìn i tiāⁿ-tio̍h ē-tàng khin-sang siû kàu-ūi, in-ūi i khak-si̍t siû liáu chin súi-khùi.
Góa goân-pún ē-sái kā hit-ê gín-á im-sí, koh hō͘ chit-ê Moor lâng tòe. M̄-koh bô-lūn jû-hô, góa m̄-káⁿ siong-sìn i. Tán i lī-khui liáu, góa oa̍t-sin hiòng hit-ê in lóng kiò "Xury" ê gín-á, kóng;
"Xury, lí nā tùi góa chīn-tiong, góa ē hō͘ lí chiâⁿ-chò chhut-sek ê lâng, m̄-koh, lí nā m̄ siàn ka-tī chhùi-phé tùi góa chiù-chōa piáu-sī chīn-tiong, góa tio̍h kā lí phiaⁿ lo̍h hái khì."
Gín-á tùi góa bî-chhiò, tō chiù-chōa boeh tùi góa chīn-tiong, boeh tòe góa kàu thiⁿ-piⁿ hái-kak. I kóng kah hiah-nī sûn-chin, góa put-tek-put siong-sìn i.
Tī hit-ê teh siû-chúi ê Moor lâng iáu khòaⁿ ē-tio̍h goán ê sî, góa bô sūn hong ê hiòng, tian-tò sī ti̍t-ti̍t sái hiòng gōa-hái khì, án-ne in tō ē siūⁿ-kóng goán sī boeh sái hiòng Gibraltar Hái-kiap khì (sū-si̍t-siōng, jīm-hô thâu-khak chheng-chhó ê lâng lóng ē án-ne siūⁿ). In-ūi bô-lâng ē siūⁿ-tio̍h, goán ē sái hiòng lâm, kàu chiâu sī iá-bân-lâng ê hái-hōaⁿ khì. Nā khì hia, iáu-bōe chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ, goán tō ē hō͘ kok-cho̍k o͘-lâng ê to̍k-bo̍k-chûn pau-ûi, kā goán sat-hāi; tō-kóng chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ, mā ē hō͘ iá-siù thun-chia̍h, a̍h hō͘ koh-khah bô-chêng ê chheⁿ-hoan chia̍h khì.
M̄-koh, chi̍t-ē kàu hông-hun, góa tō kái-piàn hâng hiòng, sái hiòng tang-lâm tang, án-ne tō ē-tàng iân hái-hōaⁿ hâng-hêng. Chit-sî, hong-sè chin hó, hái-bīn pêng-chēng, góa tō hō͘ chûn kín kiâⁿ. Góa siong-sìn, kàu keh-kang ē-po͘ saⁿ-tiám, goán tō ē-tàng khò-hōaⁿ. 2.3 囡仔咒誓欲對我盡忠 [語音]
我計畫 ê 第一步是, 假鬼 kā 彼个 Moor 人講, 著款寡家己食 ê 物件, 我 kā 伊講, 咱無應當食主人 ê pháng. 伊講, án-ne 著, tō 去款一大籃 ê 餅, 三罐清水到舢舨頂. 我知阮主人 ê 酒箱仔囥 tī 佗位, 彼个箱仔 ê 款, 看起來是一个英國戰利品. 趁 Moor 人上岸 ê 時, 我搬一寡酒到舢舨頂, 囥 tī ká-ná 主人本來囥 ê 位. 我 mā 搬量約 1/2 hundredweight [25 kg] ê 蜜蠟, koh 有一包粗線, 斧頭, 鋸仔, 和 hám-á; chiah-ê 物件後來對阮 lóng 真有路用, 尤其是蜜蠟, 會當做蠟燭.
我 koh 對伊創一个步, 無疑悟伊 koh 著吊. 伊 ê 名號做 Ismael, 但是逐个 lóng 叫伊 Muley a̍h Moely, 所以我 mā án-ne 叫伊.
"Moely," 我講, "咱主人 ê 銃已經 tī 舢舨仔頂, 你會使去提寡火藥和銃子無? 凡勢咱會使為家己拍寡 môa-u̍t (麻鷸, curlew), 我知主人 ê 火藥囥 tī 大船頂面."
"好," 伊講, "我去提寡來."
自 án-ne, 伊去捎一个大皮袋, 貯磅半 [3.3 kg] 較加 ê 火藥, 另外一个皮袋, 貯 5-6 磅 [11-13 kg] ê 鳥銃銃子, lóng kā 囥 tī 舢舨頂. 仝這時, 我 koh tī 大船艙揣著一寡主人 ê 火藥. 我 ùi 箱仔內揣著一支大酒矸, 內面酒賰少少, he 我 kā 倒去另外 ê 矸仔內, kō͘ 這个大矸仔貯滿火藥. 一切準備妥當, 阮 tō 開始出港去釣魚 lah.
港口堡壘 ê 士兵和阮有熟似, 所以無過來注意阮. 出港未到 1 mai [1.6 km] 遠, 阮 tō 落帆, 開始釣魚. 這時吹東北北 ê 風, 和我所希望 ê 顛倒反. 因為, 若透南風, 我 tō 確定會當到 Sepanga 海岸去, 上無會當到 Sepanga 西南 ê Cadiz 海灣. 毋過, 我 ê 心已經定, 毋管透啥物風, 只要離開這个可怕 ê 所在 tō 好, 其他 ê, 交 hō͘ 命運安排.
釣一睏了後, 阮啥 to 無釣著 -- tō 講有魚食餌, 我 mā 無搝釣竿, 免得 Moor 人看著. 我 kā Moor 人講:
"Án-ne 袂用得, 咱主人會無魚通食. 咱著行閣較出去一下."
伊認為 án-ne 無毋著, tō 同意; 因為 tī 船頭, 伊 tō kā 船帆掛起去. 因為由我扞舵, 我 tō kā 船駛出去將近 1 league [4.8 km], 停 tī hia 假鬼欲釣魚. 我 kā 船舵交 hō͘ Moor 囡仔扞, 向前行到 Moor 人 hia, tī 伊後面 àⁿ 身假鬼欲揣物件, tō 雄雄雙手捒伊 ê 下腰, hō͘ 伊出船落海.
這个 Moor 人真 gâu 泅水, 伊一下仔 tō 浮出海面, 叫我 hō͘ 伊上船, 講, 伊欲綴我到天邊海角. 伊 tī 後面逐船拚命泅, 彼時無啥風, 伊真緊 tō 會逐到位. 我看毋是勢, tō 入船艙, 攑一支鳥銃, 我攑銃對伊講, 我袂傷害伊, 伊若乖乖, 我 tō 放伊煞.
"你真 gâu 泅水," 我講, "會當泅上岸, 這陣無啥風湧, 緊泅轉去, 我袂傷害你. 你若倚近我 ê 船, 我 tō 彈你 ê 頭殼, 因為我決心欲得著自由."
自 án-ne, 伊越身, 泅向海岸, 我 mā 相信伊定著會當輕鬆泅到位, 因為伊確實泅了真媠氣.
我原本會使 kā 彼个囡仔淹死, koh hō͘ 這个 Moor 人綴. 毋過無論如何, 我毋敢相信伊. 等伊離開了, 我越身向彼个 in lóng 叫 "Xury" ê 囡仔, 講:
"Xury, 你若對我盡忠, 我會 hō͘ 你成做出色 ê 人, 毋過, 你若毋搧家己喙䫌對我咒誓表示盡忠, 我著 kā 你抨落海去."
囡仔對我微笑, tō 咒誓欲對我盡忠, 欲綴我到天邊海角. 伊講 kah hiah-nī 純真, 我不得不相信伊.
Tī 彼个 teh 泅水 ê Moor 人猶看會著阮 ê 時, 我無順風 ê 向, 顛倒是直直駛向外海去, án-ne in tō 會想講阮是欲駛向 Gibraltar 海峽去 (事實上, 任何頭殼清楚 ê 人 lóng 會 án-ne 想). 因為無人會想著, 阮會駛向南, 到齊是野蠻人 ê 海岸去. 若去 hia, 猶未上岸, 阮 tō 會 hō͘ 各族烏人 ê 獨木船包圍, kā 阮殺害; tō 講上岸, mā 會 hō͘ 野獸吞食, a̍h hō͘ 閣較無情 ê 生番食去.
毋過, 一下到黃昏, 我 tō 改變航向, 駛向東南東, án-ne tō 會當沿海岸航行. 這時, 風勢真好, 海面平靜, 我 tō hō͘ 船緊行. 我相信, 到隔工下晡三點, 阮 tō 會當靠岸. 彼時阮 tō 已經到 Sallee 南爿 50 mai [80 km] ê 所在, 遠遠離開 Morocco 皇帝 ê 領土, mā 毋是 tī 任何國王 ê 領土, 因為 tī hia, 阮根本 to 無看 e 有人.

My first contrivance was to make a pretence to speak to this Moor, to get something for our subsistence on board; for I told him we must not presume to eat of our patron’s bread. He said that was true; so he brought a large basket of rusk or biscuit, and three jars of fresh water, into the boat. I knew where my patron’s case of bottles stood, which it was evident, by the make, were taken out of some English prize, and I conveyed them into the boat while the Moor was on shore, as if they had been there before for our master. I conveyed also a great lump of beeswax into the boat, which weighed about half a hundred-weight, with a parcel of twine or thread, a hatchet, a saw, and a hammer, all of which were of great use to us afterwards, especially the wax, to make candles. /
Another trick I tried upon him, which he innocently came into also: his name was Ismael, which they call Muley, or Moely; so I called to him—
“Moely,” said I, “our patron’s guns are on board the boat; can you not get a little powder and shot? It may be we may kill some alcamies (a fowl like our curlews) for ourselves, for I know he keeps the gunner’s stores in the ship.”
“Yes,” says he, “I’ll bring some;” /
and accordingly he brought a great leather pouch, which held a pound and a half of powder, or rather more; and another with shot, that had five or six pounds, with some bullets, and put all into the boat. At the same time I had found some powder of my master’s in the great cabin, with which I filled one of the large bottles in the case, which was almost empty, pouring what was in it into another; and thus furnished with everything needful, we sailed out of the port to fish./
The castle, which is at the entrance of the port, knew who we were, and took no notice of us; and we were not above a mile out of the port before we hauled in our sail and set us down to fish. The wind blew from the N.N.E., which was contrary to my desire, for had it blown southerly I had been sure to have made the coast of Spain, and at least reached to the bay of Cadiz; but my resolutions were, blow which way it would, I would be gone from that horrid place where I was, and leave the rest to fate.
After we had fished some time and caught nothing—for when I had fish on my hook I would not pull them up, that he might not see them—I said to the Moor,
“This will not do; our master will not be thus served; we must stand farther off.”/
He, thinking no harm, agreed, and being in the head of the boat, set the sails; and, as I had the helm, I ran the boat out near a league farther, and then brought her to, as if I would fish; when, giving the boy the helm, I stepped forward to where the Moor was, and making as if I stooped for something behind him, I took him by surprise with my arm under his waist, and tossed him clear overboard into the sea. /
He rose immediately, for he swam like a cork, and called to me, begged to be taken in, told me he would go all over the world with me. He swam so strong after the boat that he would have reached me very quickly, there being but little wind; upon which I stepped into the cabin, and fetching one of the fowling-pieces, I presented it at him, and told him I had done him no hurt, and if he would be quiet I would do him none.
“But,” said I, “you swim well enough to reach to the shore, and the sea is calm; make the best of your way to shore, and I will do you no harm; but if you come near the boat I’ll shoot you through the head, for I am resolved to have my liberty;” /
so he turned himself about, and swam for the shore, and I make no doubt but he reached it with ease, for he was an excellent swimmer.
I could have been content to have taken this Moor with me, and have drowned the boy, but there was no venturing to trust him. When he was gone, I turned to the boy, whom they called Xury, and said to him, /
“Xury, if you will be faithful to me, I’ll make you a great man; but if you will not stroke your face to be true to me”—that is, swear by Mahomet and his father’s beard—
“I must throw you into the sea too.”
The boy smiled in my face, and spoke so innocently that I could not distrust him, and swore to be faithful to me, and go all over the world with me.
While I was in view of the Moor that was swimming, I stood out directly to sea with the boat, rather stretching to windward, that they might think me gone towards the Straits’ mouth (as indeed any one that had been in their wits must have been supposed to do): for who would have supposed we were sailed on to the southward, to the truly Barbarian coast, where whole nations of negroes were sure to surround us with their canoes and destroy us; where we could not go on shore but we should be devoured by savage beasts, or more merciless savages of human kind.
But as soon as it grew dusk in the evening, I changed my course, and steered directly south and by east, bending my course a little towards the east, that I might keep in with the shore; and having a fair, fresh gale of wind, and a smooth, quiet sea, I made such sail that I believe by the next day, at three o’clock in the afternoon, when I first made the land, I could not be less than one hundred and fifty miles south of Sallee; quite beyond the Emperor of Morocco’s dominions, or indeed of any other king thereabouts, for we saw no people.
