Góa chek-khek koah-tn̄g in kā pa̍k ê chhiong-pô͘ a̍h teng-sim chháu, siūⁿ boeh kā hû khí-lâi. M̄-koh, i bē khiā mā bē kóng-ōe, kan-ta khin-khin hiⁿ-siaⁿ, khó-liân tih-tih, góa khòaⁿ, i iáu siūⁿ-kóng, tháu-khui sī boeh lia̍h khì thâi. Tán Friday lâi kàu hia, góa kiò i kā kóng, i tit-kiù ah. Góa koh ná gîm chhut chiú-koàn, kiò i chhòng hō͘ hit-ê khó-liân hoan-á lim chi̍t-sut-á. Lim kóa chiú, koh thiaⁿ-tio̍h i tit-kiù, i sûi oa̍h kòe-lâi, koh chē thêng tī chûn-té. M̄-koh, tán Friday óa-sin thiaⁿ i kóng-ōe, koh khòaⁿ i ê bīn, hō͘ lâng kám-tōng kah ē lâu ba̍k-sái ê kiàⁿ-bīn chhut-hiān ah. Friday chim hit-lâng, kā siâm koh mo͘h, khàu koh chhiò, hoah koh hiu, tiô koh thiàu koh chhiùⁿ-koa. Jiân-āu, i iū-koh khàu, ngiú ka-tī ê chhiú, siàn ka-tī ê bīn koh phah ka-tī ê thâu, jiân-āu koh chhiùⁿ-koa lāng-bú, ná-chhiūⁿ khí-siáu ah. Án-ne kòe chi̍t-khùn, góa chiah ū ki-hōe mn̄g i, tàu-té sī án-chóaⁿ. Tán i khah tìn-chēng, i chiah kā góa kóng, he sī in lāu-pē.
Khòaⁿ tio̍h chit-ê khó-liân chheⁿ-hoan kìⁿ tio̍h in lāu-pē, chai-iáⁿ lāu-pē ùi sí tit-kiù, só͘ liû-lō͘ ê hoaⁿ-hí kap hàu-sim, hō͘ góa kám-tōng kah bô hoat-tō͘ piáu-ta̍t. M̄-nā án-ne, óng-āu in ê pē-kiáⁿ chhim-chêng, koh-khah sī hō͘ góa chi̍t-pòaⁿ to biô-siá bē-lâi. In-ūi i chi̍t-ē tō chiūⁿ-chûn, liâm-mi iū lo̍h-chûn, án-ne lâi-lâi khì-khì chē-chē pái. Chi̍t-ē chiūⁿ-chûn, i tō chē tī lāu-pē sin-piⁿ, hiàn chhut heng-chêng, kā lāu-pē ê thâu ân-ân lám tī heng-khám kúi-ā hun-cheng, án-ne kā i sioh-sioh. Jiân-āu, i koh gia̍h khí lāu-pē ê he hông pa̍k kah bâ khì ê kha kap chhiú, kā thut, kā thui. Khòaⁿ tio̍h án-ne, góa ùi koàn-á tò chi̍t-kóa rum chiú, hō͘ i kō͘ he thui, án-ne chin ū hó-chhù.
Chit-chân tāi-chì hō͘ goán bô koh khì jiok chē to̍k-bo̍k-chiu cháu khì ê chheⁿ-hoan, taⁿ in í-keng kiông boeh bô khòaⁿ-e iáⁿ ah. Ka-chài goán bô khì jiok, in-ūi bô nn̄g tiám-cheng, hái-siōng í-keng khí tōa hong, hiah-ê lâng eng-tong kiâⁿ bô sì-hun-it in ê lō͘-têng. Tōa hong chhoe kui-mê, he sī sai-pak hong, tùi in sī chìⁿ-hong, góa bô jīn-ûi in ê chûn bē péng, mā bô jīn-ûi in kò ē-kàu hái-hōaⁿ.
Taⁿ, koh hoan-thâu tńg-lâi kóng Friday. I bô-êng chhih-chhih teh chiàu-kò͘ lāu-pē, góa put-jím-sim kiò i. Tán góa jīn-ûi i ē-tàng sió-khóa sóa-kha, chiah kiò i lâi sin-piⁿ. I chhia̍k-chhia̍k tiô, chhiò hi-hi, hoaⁿ-hí kah lia̍h bē-tiâu. Góa mn̄g i, kám ū hō͘ lāu-pē chia̍h pháng. I iô-thâu kóng:
"Bô, bái káu ka-tī chia̍h liáu-liáu."
Góa tō ùi ka-tī te̍k-pia̍t chah ê tē-á the̍h chi̍t-tè pháng hō͘ i. Góa koh hō͘ i chi̍t sió-au ê chiú, kiò i ka-tī lim. M̄-koh, i chip to bô chip tō the̍h khì hō͘ in lāu-pē. Góa lak-tē-á lāi iáu ū nn̄g/saⁿ kōaⁿ pô-tô-koaⁿ, tō koh hō͘ i chi̍t-me thang-hó hō͘ in lāu-pē.
I kā pô-tô-koaⁿ sàng hō͘ lāu-pē, sûi koh thiàu chhut sió-chûn, cháu-khui, bē-su tio̍h-kâu, he cháu ê sok-tō͘ sī góa m̄-bat khòaⁿ kòe ê. I cháu hiah kín, chi̍t-ē-á tō bô khòaⁿ-e iáⁿ, sui-bóng góa tùi i tōa-siaⁿ kiò, i kan-ta kín-kín cháu-khui. Kòe 15 hun-cheng, góa chiah koh khòaⁿ tio̍h i cháu tńg-lâi, bô chhiūⁿ tú-chiah cháu hiah kín. Tán i khah óa ê sî, góa hoat-hiān i chhiú-ni̍h the̍h mi̍h-kiāⁿ, só͘-í bô cháu hiah kín.
Tán i kàu góa bīn-chêng góa chiah chai, goân-lâi i sī tńg-chhù the̍h chi̍t thô͘-koàn its chi̍t-ô͘ ê chúi boeh hō͘ lāu-pē lim, koh ū nn̄g-tè pháng. I kā pháng hō͘ góa, chúi hō͘ in lāu-pē. M̄-koh, in-ūi góa mā chin chhùi-ta, góa mā sió lim chi̍t-kóa chúi. He chúi hō͘ in lāu-pē ê goân-khì khah hó kòe só͘-ū ê chiú, in-ūi i í-keng chhùi-ta kah boeh hūn khì ah.

16.6 伊 kā 我講, 彼是 in 老爸
我即刻割斷 in kā 縛 ê 菖蒲 a̍h 燈心草, 想欲 kā 扶起來. M̄-koh, 伊袂徛 mā 袂講話, 干焦輕輕 hiⁿ 聲, 可憐 tih-tih, 我看, 伊猶想講, 敨開是欲掠去刣. 等 Friday 來到 hia, 我叫伊 kā 講, 伊得救 ah. 我 koh ná 扲出酒罐, 叫伊創予彼个可憐番仔啉一屑仔. 啉寡酒, koh 聽著伊得救, 伊隨活過來, koh 坐騰 tī 船底. M̄-koh, 等 Friday 倚身聽伊講話, koh 看伊 ê 面, 予人感動 kah 會流目屎 ê 鏡面出現 ah. Friday 唚彼人, kā siâm koh mo͘h, 哭 koh 笑, 喝 koh 咻, 趒 koh 跳 koh 唱歌. 然後, 伊又閣哭, 扭家己 ê 手, 搧家己 ê 面 koh 拍家己 ê 頭, 然後 koh 唱歌弄舞, ná 像起痟 ah. Án-ne 過一睏, 我才有機會問伊, 到底是按怎. 等伊較鎮靜, 伊才 kā 我講, 彼是 in 老爸.
看著這个可憐生番見著 in 老爸, 知影老爸 ùi 死得救, 所流露 ê 歡喜 kap 孝心, 予我感動 kah 無法度表達. 毋但 án-ne, 往後 in ê 爸囝深情, 閣較是予我一半 to 描寫袂來. 因為伊一下 tō 上船, liâm-mi 又落船, án-ne 來來去去濟濟擺. 一下上船, 伊 tō 坐 tī 老爸身邊, 現出胸前, kā 老爸 ê 頭 ân-ân 攬 tī 胸坎幾若分鐘, án-ne kā 伊 sioh-sioh. 然後, 伊 koh 攑起老爸 ê he hông 縛 kah 麻去 ê 跤 kap 手, kā thut, kā 推. 看著 án-ne, 我 ùi 罐仔倒一寡 rum 酒, 予伊 kō͘ he 推, án-ne 真有好處.
這層代誌予阮無 koh 去逐坐獨木舟走去 ê 生番, 今 in 已經強欲無看 e 影 ah. 佳哉阮無去逐, 因為無兩點鐘, 海上已經起大風, hiah-ê 人應當行無四分一 in ê 路程. 大風吹規暝, 彼是西北風, 對 in 是搢風, 我無認為 in ê 船袂 péng, mā 無認為 in 划會到海岸.
今, koh 翻頭轉來講 Friday. 伊無閒 chhih-chhih teh 照顧老爸, 我不忍心叫伊. 等我認為伊會當小可徙跤, 才叫伊來身邊. 伊 chhia̍k-chhia̍k 趒, 笑 hi-hi, 歡喜 kah 掠袂牢. 我問伊, 敢有予老爸食 pháng. 伊搖頭講:
"無, 䆀狗家己食了了."
我 tō ùi 家己特別扎 ê 袋仔提一塊 pháng 予伊. 我 koh 予伊一小甌 ê 酒, 叫伊家己啉. M̄-koh, 伊 chip to 無 chip tō 提去予 in 老爸. 我橐袋仔內猶有兩三捾 pô-tô 乾, tō koh 予伊一搣通好予 in 老爸.
伊 kā 葡萄乾送予老爸, 隨 koh 跳出小船, 走開, 袂輸著猴, he 走 ê 速度是我 m̄-bat 看過 ê. 伊走 hiah 緊, 一下仔 tō 無看 e 影, 雖罔我對伊大聲叫, 伊干焦緊緊走開. 過 15 分鐘, 我才 koh 看著伊走轉來, 無像拄才走 hiah 緊. 等伊較倚 ê 時, 我發現伊手 ni̍h 提物件, 所以無走 hiah 緊.
等伊到我面前我才知, 原來伊是轉厝提一塗罐 its 一壺 ê 水欲予老爸啉, koh 有兩塊 pháng. 伊 kā pháng 予我, 水予 in 老爸. M̄-koh, 因為我 mā 真喙焦, 我 mā 小啉一寡水. He 水予 in 老爸 ê 元氣較好過所有 ê 酒, 因為伊已經喙焦 kah 欲昏去 ah.

I immediately cut the twisted flags or rushes which they had bound him with, and would have helped him up; but he could not stand or speak, but groaned most piteously, believing, it seems, still, that he was only unbound in order to be killed. When Friday came to him I bade him speak to him, and tell him of his deliverance; and pulling out my bottle, made him give the poor wretch a dram, which, with the news of his being delivered, revived him, and he sat up in the boat. But when Friday came to hear him speak, and look in his face, it would have moved any one to tears to have seen how Friday kissed him, embraced him, hugged him, cried, laughed, hallooed, jumped about, danced, sang; then cried again, wrung his hands, beat his own face and head; and then sang and jumped about again like a distracted creature. It was a good while before I could make him speak to me or tell me what was the matter; but when he came a little to himself he told me that it was his father.
It is not easy for me to express how it moved me to see what ecstasy and filial affection had worked in this poor savage at the sight of his father, and of his being delivered from death; nor indeed can I describe half the extravagances of his affection after this: for he went into the boat and out of the boat a great many times: when he went in to him he would sit down by him, open his breast, and hold his father’s head close to his bosom for many minutes together, to nourish it; then he took his arms and ankles, which were numbed and stiff with the binding, and chafed and rubbed them with his hands; and I, perceiving what the case was, gave him some rum out of my bottle to rub them with, which did them a great deal of good.
This affair put an end to our pursuit of the canoe with the other savages, who were now almost out of sight; and it was happy for us that we did not, for it blew so hard within two hours after, and before they could be got a quarter of their way, and continued blowing so hard all night, and that from the north-west, which was against them, that I could not suppose their boat could live, or that they ever reached their own coast.
But to return to Friday; he was so busy about his father that I could not find in my heart to take him off for some time; but after I thought he could leave him a little, I called him to me, and he came jumping and laughing, and pleased to the highest extreme: then I asked him if he had given his father any bread. He shook his head, and said,
“None; ugly dog eat all up self.”
I then gave him a cake of bread out of a little pouch I carried on purpose; I also gave him a dram for himself; but he would not taste it, but carried it to his father. I had in my pocket two or three bunches of raisins, so I gave him a handful of them for his father. /
He had no sooner given his father these raisins but I saw him come out of the boat, and run away as if he had been bewitched, for he was the swiftest fellow on his feet that ever I saw: I say, he ran at such a rate that he was out of sight, as it were, in an instant; and though I called, and hallooed out too after him, it was all one—away he went; and in a quarter of an hour I saw him come back again, though not so fast as he went; and as he came nearer I found his pace slacker, because he had something in his hand. /
When he came up to me I found he had been quite home for an earthen jug or pot, to bring his father some fresh water, and that he had got two more cakes or loaves of bread: the bread he gave me, but the water he carried to his father; however, as I was very thirsty too, I took a little of it. The water revived his father more than all the rum or spirits I had given him, for he was fainting with thirst.
