7.2 Taⁿ góa ū chi̍t-keng pia̍t-chong
Góa hoat-hiān, taⁿ góa tio̍h kín chhái kóa kóe-chí chah tńg chhù. Góa koat-tēng tio̍h siu-chi̍p pô-tô, lime hām lemon lâi pó-chûn, hó-thang hō͘-kùi ê sî iōng, góa chai hō͘-kùi tit-boeh kàu ah. Só͘-tì, góa chhái chi̍t tōa tui pô-tô khǹg tī chi̍t-ūi, chi̍t sió tui tī pa̍t-ūi, koh chhái chi̍t tōa tui lime hām lemon tī lēng-gōa chi̍t-ūi. Ta̍k-hāng chah chi̍t-kóa, góa kiâⁿ hiòng chhù, koat-ì boeh chah chi̍t-kha tē-á, lok-á a̍h ē-sái té ê mi̍h koh lâi, kā chhun-ê chah tńg-chhù.
Chū án-ne, chit-pái chhut-mn̂g góa khai saⁿ-kang chiah tńg kàu chhù (its góa ê pò͘-phâng hām soaⁿ-tōng). M̄-koh, bōe kàu chhù, pô-tô í-keng teh pháiⁿ ah; kàu-hun ê kó-si̍t hām kó-chiap ê tāng-liōng í-keng hō͘ in chiⁿ phòa kah lâu thng lâu chiap, ē-sái chia̍h ê bô chē. Á lime neh, he bô būn-tê, m̄-koh góa chah bô kúi-lia̍p.
Keh-kang, its 19 hit-ji̍t, góa koh khì, chah nn̄g-kha tē-á boeh chah góa ê siu-sêng tńg-chhù. M̄-koh, góa kui-ê gāng-khì, lâi kàu pô-tô tui thâu-chêng, hiah-ê góa teh bán ê sî pá-chúi koh hó-khòaⁿ ê pô-tô, sòaⁿ phún-phún, pī thún-ta̍h koh iā kah chi̍t sì-kè, koh ū bē-chió sī chia̍h khì a̍h hàu-ko͘ khì. Khòaⁿ tio̍h che, góa chai, chit hū-kīn ū iá-seng tōng-bu̍t, che sī in chò ê, m̄-koh góa m̄-chai in sī siáⁿ tōng-bu̍t.
Kàu chia, góa chai-iáⁿ, bē-sái kā in khǹg kui-tui, mā bē-sái kā in kō͘ tē-á chah cháu, khǹg kui-tui ē hō͘ tōng-bu̍t thó-chè, té tī tē-á ē hō͘ in ka-tī tāng-liōng teh pháiⁿ, góa siūⁿ tio̍h pa̍t-ê hoat-tō͘. Góa bán chē-chē pô-tô, kā kòa tī chhiū-oe, hō͘ ji̍t-thâu pha̍k ē-tio̍h, kā pha̍k ta. Lime hām lemon, góa chīn-liōng kō͘ tē-á té, kā phāiⁿ tńg-lâi.
Tán góa tńg kàu chhù, siūⁿ tio̍h hit-ê soaⁿ-kok bu̍t-sán hong-hù, khoân-kéng iu-bí, góa chiâⁿ hoaⁿ-hí; hia ū chúi, ū chhiū-nâ, m̄-kiaⁿ tōa hong-hō͘. Góa ê kiat-lūn: góa taⁿ khiā-ke ê tē-tiám sī choân-tó siōng bái ê só͘-chāi. Chóng-kóng, góa khai-sí khó-lī boeh poaⁿ-chhù, chhōe chi̍t-ê hām hit-ūi pêⁿ an-choân ê tē-tiám, nā ē-sái tō sóa khì tó-siōng hit-ê chheng-iu, chē koa-kó ê só͘-chāi.
Chit-ê siūⁿ-hoat tī góa thâu-khak se̍h chin kú, ū sî-chūn góa chiok kah-ì hia, hit só͘-chāi ê iu-bí te̍k-pia̍t khip-ín góa. Tān-sī, tán góa kiâⁿ óa koh siông-sè kā khòaⁿ, koh khó-lī tio̍h góa taⁿ tòa ê sī óa hái-piⁿ, che mā ū i ê hó-chhù. Bān-it ū-lâng bô-siá-sì hām góa pêⁿ pháiⁿ-ūn, lâi kàu kāng chit-ê só͘-chāi, sui-bóng hit-ê khó-lêng-sèng chin chió, m̄-koh nā kā ka-tī koaiⁿ tī tó tiong-ng ê soaⁿ-nâ lāi-bīn, góa m̄-nā oh tú-tio̍h chit-khoán tāi-chì, kin-pún sī liân ki-hōe to bô ah. Só͘-tì, m̄-koán án-chóaⁿ, góa m̄-thang poaⁿ-chhù.
Put-jî-kò, góa ū-kàu kah-ì hit-ê só͘-chāi, só͘-tì kàu 7 goe̍h kiat-sok chìn-chêng, góa put-sî khì hia. Keng-kòe chài-saⁿ khó-lī, góa koat-tēng m̄ poaⁿ-chhù. Tān-sī góa ūi ka-tī tī hia khí chi̍t-keng liâu-á, sì-piⁿ hn̄g-hn̄g ûi chi̍t-ê kian-kò͘ ê siang-iân lî-pa, koân-tō͘ cpt [chha-put-to] góa chhun-chhiú hiah koân. Lî-pa ê khi̍t-á chhāi chin chāi, siang-iân tiong-kan chèng móa é-chhiū-á. Góa khùn tī chit-ê só͘-chāi chin an-choân, ū-sî góa lâi chia liân-sòa tòa nn̄g/saⁿ mê, chhut-ji̍p mā sī iōng thui. Chū án-ne, góa kám-kak taⁿ góa ū chi̍t-keng pia̍t-chong, koh ū chi̍t-keng óa hái-hōaⁿ ê chhù. Chit-ê khang-khòe it-ti̍t kàu 8 goe̍h chhe chiah chò hó-sè.
Góa tú-tú chiah oân-sêng lî-pa, khai-sí hiáng-siū lô-tōng ê kiat-kó, chit-sî hō͘ tō lâi ah, hāi góa tiâu-tiâu koaiⁿ tī kū chhù. Sui-bóng góa ê sin chhù mā sī kō͘ chûn-phâng khàm ê pò͘-phâng, peⁿ kah chin hó-sè, m̄-koh i bô soaⁿ-piah thang cha̍h tōa hong-hō͘, hō͘ lo̍h tōa ê sî, mā bô soaⁿ-tōng thang bih.

7.2 今我有一間別莊
我發現, 今我著緊採寡果子扎轉厝. 我決定著收集葡萄, lime 和 lemon 來保存, hó-thang 雨季 ê 時用, 我知雨季得欲到 ah. 所致, 我採一大堆葡萄囥 tī 一位, 一小堆 tī 別位, koh 採一大堆 lime 和 lemon tī 另外一位. 逐項扎一寡, 我行向厝, 決意欲扎一跤袋仔, 橐仔 a̍h 會使貯 ê 物 koh 來, kā 賰 ê 扎轉厝.
自 án-ne, 這擺出門我開三工才轉到厝 (its 我 ê 布篷和山洞). M̄-koh, 未到厝, 葡萄已經硩歹 ah; 到分 ê 果實和果汁 ê 重量已經予 in 櫼破 kah 流湯流汁, ē-sái 食 ê 無濟. Á lime neh, he 無問題, m̄-koh 我扎無幾粒.
隔工, its 19 彼日, 我 koh 去, 扎兩跤袋仔欲扎我 ê 收成轉厝. M̄-koh, 我規个愣去, 來到葡萄堆頭前, hiah-ê 我 teh 挽 ê 時飽水 koh 好看 ê 葡萄, 散 phún-phún, 被𧿬踏 koh 掖 kah 一四界, koh 有袂少是食去 a̍h 孝孤去. 看著這, 我知, 這附近有野生動物, 這是 in 做 ê, m̄-koh 我毋知 in 是啥動物.
到遮, 我知影, 袂使 kā in 囥規堆, mā 袂使 kā in kō͘ 袋仔扎走, 囥規堆會予動物討債, 貯 tī 袋仔會予 in 家己重量硩歹, 我想著別个法度. 我挽濟濟葡萄, kā 掛 tī 樹椏, 予日頭曝會著, kā 曝焦. Lime 和 lemon, 我盡量 kō͘ 袋仔貯, kā 揹轉來.
等我轉到厝, 想著彼个山谷物產豐富, 環境優美, 我誠歡喜; hia 有水, 有樹林, 毋驚大風雨. 我 ê 結論: 我今徛家 ê 地點是全島上䆀 ê 所在. 總講, 我開始考慮欲搬厝, 揣一个和彼位 pêⁿ 安全 ê 地點, 若 ē-sái tō 徙去島上彼个清幽, 濟瓜果 ê 所在.
這个想法 tī 我頭殼踅真久, 有時陣我足佮意 hia, 彼所在 ê 優美特別吸引我. 但是, 等我行倚 koh 詳細 kā 看, koh 考慮著我今蹛 ê 是倚海邊, 這 mā 有伊 ê 好處. 萬一有人無捨世和我 pêⁿ 歹運, 來到仝這个所在, 雖罔彼个可能性真少, m̄-koh 若 kā 家己關 tī 島中央 ê 山林內面, 我毋但僫拄著這款代誌, 根本是連機會 to 無 ah. 所致, 毋管按怎, 我 m̄-thang 搬厝.
不而過, 我有夠佮意彼个所在, 所致到 7 月結束進前, 我不時去 hia. 經過再三考慮, 我決定毋搬厝. 但是我為家己 tī hia 起一間寮仔, 四邊遠遠圍一个堅固 ê 雙沿籬笆, 懸度 cpt [chha-put-to] 我伸手 hiah 懸. 籬笆 ê 杙仔 chhāi 真在, 雙沿中間種滿矮樹仔. 我睏 tī 這个所在真安全, 有時我來 chia 連紲蹛兩三暝, 出入 mā 是用梯. 自 án-ne, 我感覺今我有一間別莊, koh 有一間倚海岸 ê 厝. 這个工課一直到 8 月初才做好勢.
我拄拄才完成籬笆, 開始享受勞動 ê 結果, 這時雨 tō 來 ah, 害我牢牢關 tī 舊厝. 雖罔我 ê 新厝 mā 是 kō͘ 船帆崁 ê 布篷, 繃 kah 真好勢, m̄-koh 伊無山壁 thang 閘大風雨, 雨落大 ê 時, mā 無山洞 thang 覕.

I found now I had business enough to gather and carry home; and I resolved to lay up a store as well of grapes as limes and lemons, to furnish myself for the wet season, which I knew was approaching. In order to do this, I gathered a great heap of grapes in one place, a lesser heap in another place, and a great parcel of limes and lemons in another place; and taking a few of each with me, I travelled homewards; resolving to come again, and bring a bag or sack, or what I could make, to carry the rest home. /
Accordingly, having spent three days in this journey, I came home (so I must now call my tent and my cave); but before I got thither the grapes were spoiled; the richness of the fruit and the weight of the juice having broken them and bruised them, they were good for little or nothing; as to the limes, they were good, but I could bring but a few.
The next day, being the nineteenth, I went back, having made me two small bags to bring home my harvest; but I was surprised, when coming to my heap of grapes, which were so rich and fine when I gathered them, to find them all spread about, trod to pieces, and dragged about, some here, some there, and abundance eaten and devoured. By this I concluded there were some wild creatures thereabouts, which had done this; but what they were I knew not. /
However, as I found there was no laying them up on heaps, and no carrying them away in a sack, but that one way they would be destroyed, and the other way they would be crushed with their own weight, I took another course; for I gathered a large quantity of the grapes, and hung upon the out-branches of the trees, that they might cure and dry in the sun; and as for the limes and lemons, I carried as many back as I could well stand under.
When I came home from this journey, I contemplated with great pleasure the fruitfulness of that valley, and the pleasantness of the situation; the security from storms on that side of the water, and the wood: and concluded that I had pitched upon a place to fix my abode which was by far the worst part of the country. Upon the whole, I began to consider of removing my habitation, and looking out for a place equally safe as where now I was situate, if possible, in that pleasant, fruitful part of the island.
This thought ran long in my head, and I was exceeding fond of it for some time, the pleasantness of the place tempting me; but when I came to a nearer view of it, I considered that I was now by the seaside, where it was at least possible that something might happen to my advantage, and, by the same ill fate that brought me hither might bring some other unhappy wretches to the same place; and though it was scarce probable that any such thing should ever happen, yet to enclose myself among the hills and woods in the centre of the island was to anticipate my bondage, and to render such an affair not only improbable, but impossible; and that therefore I ought not by any means to remove. /
However, I was so enamoured of this place, that I spent much of my time there for the whole of the remaining part of the month of July; and though upon second thoughts, I resolved not to remove, yet I built me a little kind of a bower, and surrounded it at a distance with a strong fence, being a double hedge, as high as I could reach, well staked and filled between with brushwood; and here I lay very secure, sometimes two or three nights together; always going over it with a ladder; so that I fancied now I had my country house and my sea-coast house; and this work took me up to the beginning of August.
I had but newly finished my fence, and began to enjoy my labour, when the rains came on, and made me stick close to my first habitation; for though I had made me a tent like the other, with a piece of a sail, and spread it very well, yet I had not the shelter of a hill to keep me from storms, nor a cave behind me to retreat into when the rains were extraordinary.
